Toro Recycler 22" Personal Pace
SteveSouth West, WA
Looks good. Operator friendly just not suitable for my property.
This is an Operator friendly Lawnmower which is unsuitable for anything but a perfect lawn. My 6 1/2 acre property is 90% grass with much of it under trees with twigs and gum nuts. Just too much plastic under the deck for Australian conditions.
A bit useless.
Had it for less than a year, the undercarriage is cracked and broken after mowing half an acre of established lawn 2-3 times per month. Self propelled functions stopped working. Blade worn out.awkward to manoeuvre. After less than a year the cost of repairs = half of the purchase price.
Never again! Get a Honda.
Purchased in February 2020 for $980.00.

Not impressed
This is the most expensive and most useless mower I have ever purchased. The catcher only collects about 80% of the clippings and does not much better on mulching. As other people have said, the catcher only half fills.

Wish I'd purchased something more powerful
We have about 1/2 an acre of lawn on level ground. If the grass is over, say, 3 inches the 163cc just isn't powerful enough to do the job, at least with the catcher. Seems to be engineered all wrong with the catcher riding too high for grass to be thrown through the rear chute and not enough power to force it through. The downside is that it continually clogs up. On a good day the catcher will only fill half way before it needs emptying. Catcher handle is also poorly made - keeps coming off. Other than that its not a bad mower.

Great Lawnmower
Really appreciate the self drive and the electric start. Makes lawn mowing a lot easier as I approach retirement. Can be a little heavy to pull backwards. 21inch cutting width is very nice.

Impressive performer
Motorised mowing is a breeze with this mower. works great with the catcher, the side shute, or simply with the recycling shredder. I find the recycler easy to man-oeuvre with a large cutting area. Starting is always easy. This machine uses 4 stroke petrol so no messy mixing oil. The engine oil reservoir is easy to access for checking oil levels and/or topping up. the non cast chassis is sturdy and flexible for almost all terrains.
Sadly the only concern is the undercarriage. whilst the steel body is strong and very workable some undercarriage parts have bent after blades contact with a foreign object. otherwise 5 stars

From a former professionals considered opinion, it only satisfied 80% of my demands. It's still more than adequate.
I've years of applicable industry experience, I'm composing this review from the perspective of the average somebody in the market whose swamped by new mower options, trying to choose one that's right for them.
I'm asking questions that you should be asking yourselves of practicality and suitability. I'm also giving my answers to those questions (re this particular Toro mower) as the basis for this review.
For most people they won't get something that ticks every box but a small compromise can lead to something that's an overall winning produ...
Read morect. The biggest compromise for me, one can't disable the cutting blade from turning and still use the self-propelled drive to move from area to area, eg when moving from backyard to front yard with gates, stoned garden beds etc in between. The reason I'm compromised by this is it doesn't have a clutch/neutral setting for pushing. Either you push the mower (engine shut down) with a resistance from the wheels because the drive gear is still engaged, or you push the mower, fairly effortlessly because it is self propelled (engine running) but the blade is still spinning also. For me, now that I'm retired, that's really just a minor irritation but if I was still mowing professionally it'd definitely be a major pain in the posterior. *In choosing a new lawn mower the first place to start is identifying exactly what your current needs are and what the most likely needs in the future will be.Purchased in April 2020 at Bunnings Warehouse for $685.00.

Great Mower - Big Yard - Easy - Love it
Easy Start and that's just the Start.
4 adjustable wheels (not sure why yet?)
Anyway someone's really thought about mowers and made this one.
Purchased 22/02/2020 after a Victa I bought died on the first use. So upgraded to Toro based on reviews. Powerful motor and great catch/ mulch. The personal pace is very good after several self drive others I've owned, because it goes with you and backs off when you stop walking or back up - its a push mechanism incorporated in the handle not a separate lever if you know what I mean. Anyway check it o...

Completely spoiled by MESH grass catcher
Today was my first time with my new mower. Having trundled my trusty Victa around for years, I was looking forward to using a mower that took itself up the steep slopes on part of my block. To be fair, that part worked really well and was exactly as described.
The problem was the dust. This is Australia so it tends to be dry, however, we have had a fair amount of rain lately so I wouldn’t describe the lawn as dry, more green and lush than anything. However, the mesh construction of the grass catcher meant that I was immediately inhaling dust a...

Never, never again
Bought this a year ago and was initially impressed. Engine starts easily, weird control system, its big, heavy and not the easiest to use in tight areas, but did a good job of mowing on a hilly 1 acre block. Got really ugly when a small bit of stick got picked up in the drive belt, via a shroud that is supposed to but doesn't protect the belt or associated pulleys. Locked up in the pulley above the self-drive gear box. Shredded the pulley, gear box is sounding and feeling knackered and I'm still figuring out how I can get the whole setup apa...
Read morert to repair it - the manual is useless. Its a nightmare to work on - complicated, fiddly. I have a nasty feeling my $600 mower will be heading tipwards and getting replaced by something cheap and nasty from China. At least I'll know what I'm in for.Purchased at Bunnings Warehouse.

Would never buy another Toro.
Owned for 6 years, drive system just passable though now gears have stripped in wheels. Hopeless at mulching grass, catching grass lousy due to small catcher chute always blocking up same for side discharge. Motor ok, have kept up with maintenance and chassis has rusted out. I have a 30 year old Victa mustang and this old girl out performs the Toro on all levels.

Cuts buffalo beautifully
I bought this mower from bunnings for $649.
Assembly was easy however the instructions provided where poor. They were poor quality pictures with no written instructions. They were not model specific but generic for most of their mowers. This created some confusion. I could not start the mower initially and on further inspection noticed the spark plug was not connected. I did not see this in the assembly instructions. Once connected it started first pull.
In regards to its mowing abilities:
I have a large yard and hilly backyard which ...

the 22 inch cut certainly saves time, although an 18 or 20 inch would be ideal for my Yard
I like this lawnmower - I didn't realise that you had to move the blue lever to catch the grass in the catcher. Once I figured this out it works really well. The self-drive (Personal Pace) feature works very well - I bought this for that reason and I have already benefitted from not having to push a mower around my yard. Although, if they had a slightly smaller version I would have bought that as I don't have a large yard. Very easy to clean and I like that you can adjust each wheel height independently as I have a slope which I can now cut perfectly.

NO SERVICE FROM TORO OR DEALER
Got this Toro mower because my neighbor has one and hi Toro works great.
I had to choose between the Toro 780 $ or cheap unit of 350$
I bought mine Toro less then a year ago and have been back to shop 6 times
every time with the same problem. when i get back the Toro mows for 15 min and the same problem occurs.
I think i have been very patience with Toro by going back and forward for 6 times now I brought it back and would like to have my money back or a Toro that works.
I think it is unbelievable companies can work this way totally no service ...

What a great mower
Bought mower yesterday. Got home and set level and mowed and mulched all lawn areas. Great job excellent cut. Then installed side throw and proceeded with all tall leaves and many gum leaves and bark under trees. Again an excellent job. Hilly property under trees reverse assis great. You have to plan you mowing as auto stop bit of a nuisance if you have to move an obstacle.

Heap of garbage
Clogs up easily. Four years of use and the friction plate is worn out. No good on thick Buffalo lawns. It Will not mulch. Blades jam motor keeps running. Very hard to push even though it drive assisted as the mounting bolts for the blade protrude lower than the blade. Very under powered.
Not great as a mulch mower
Ok for catching but clogs up fast trying to side throw, I have to keep stopping to clear the Shute. As for mulching it does not have the revs to make a good job and you end up with clumps Of mashed up grass all over the lawn. The self drive is great and really strong but it really needs a power upgrade.

Best mower yet
I had read reviews, crawled over mower shops, spoke to friends, looked at web sites for almost a year and then purchased a Toro recycler 22" personal pace electric start. I have now had this mower for a year. I must 1st say that an electric start is a wonderful thing. With the engine stop lever that must be released to remove the catcher bag, reaching down and pushing that start button is so satisfying.
I am 72 years old and an ex smoker with the usual lung problems. What used to defeat me was the cord start. No more. And to make it e...
Read moreven better, when I look at the cut this mower does, it is almost equal to a cylinder mower finish. The self pace in the name refers to a system where a secondary full size handle is attached to clutch. Push down on the handle and start walking at your normal walking pace, ease back on the handle and the mower slows, walk faster and that means your pressure on the handle increases the speed of the mower. Magic! There a no gears, this eliminates the need to walk at the pace the gear wants you to. YOU SELECT your walking pace. The mower has a catcher, side discharge or mulcher. The side discharge has a flap and a guide that attaches easily and the catcher is one of the easiest to attach. The mulcher cuts the grass to a fine almost powder. These cut methods are controlled by a large substantial lever that is way ahead of the usual plastic insert you have to use on all the other mowers I have used. The wheel height has to be adjusted by a lever at EACH wheel. What I have had happen on previous mowers is that the single adjustment fails as the front axle is an interference fit at the front and over time the plastic grommets crack and the front wheels fall off. If you have never had this happen you must not have teenage sons that hate mowing and don't run into objects (trees, walls, gutters) in frustration. I have a strict rule now with this mower, no sons! The mower will go back to the mower place each year for a service, and I will be using a fuel stabiliser. I live in Queensland and mowing 1000sqm in 30 degree plus temps at 6pm is now a joy, not torture.1 comment
One year on and the mower is still a great buy. And that electric start is a life saver. Toro have released a new model of this mower that now has a reverse function to make it even easier to mow.

Accidentally put diesel in..how do I wash it out and will this be effective.

Hi, if you didnt run it, just siphon the tank otherwise if it was run and fuel went thru the system, you need to empty the tank, clean the carburettor and fuel pump and fuel line. It's a bugga. However, you could just dilute it as much as possible with premium petrol which washes the fuel system whilst its running, put up with the smoke for a bit and let it run through. I doubt it will cause any damage. :(

Back again, with no change of rating. I persevered, stripped the bloody thing down (which isn't easy). Turned out not to be the gear box, but a build-up of dirt and cut grass, locked up solidly, on ...
Read morethe gears and cogs that come off the rear axle and which drive the self drive system. Which isn't surprising, because the plastic shrouds which 'protect' the gears are open to the wind, rain and every bit of dust and grass the mower kicks up -its inevitable that every one of these mowers will get blocked up gearing sooner or later. So if you own one, pull the back wheels off every 6 months (that's the easy bit) and clean out the cogs and gears. Its a slow, grubby job. If you don't own one, don't start now.
