I have not owned a Camry, but as a racing car owner/driver spanning 44 years, I think I know just a tad about cars. Over the past year or two I have had numerous trips in Camry Hybrid taxis, and I have been mightily impressed by even the high mileage examples. (And by "high" I am talking 600,000 Km plus) They have impressive torque (acceleration)… Read more

from any speed and yet, are light on fuel consumption while doing it. The other thing that really impresses me is their suspension, which remains "tight", as opposed to "bouncy", even at advanced mileage. Apparently a replacement battery would cost around $3000, as opposed to the battery of a fully electric Tesla which costs $30,000 to replace... and you don't have to plug the Camry into charge everynight! When I get over my obsession with sportscars, I will definitely be buying a Camry.

Who needs a Lexus? It's the best choice for most sedan buyers – I've never been in the front seat of a Camry...until now. I've ridden in plenty of Camrys in my life. Most of them were old, tired and seen many bums on seats when being used as a Taxi or ride share vehicle. This was my first time driving a modern day, high spec Camry. I have to say, I finally can see why these are so popular to drive. … Read more

Whether you're buying this for personal or business use, it's clear to see why some of the highest mileage cars in service today are Toyota Camrys.

They've proven to be reliable mechanically and in their build quality too. Sadly, in the shadow of the growing popularity of SUVs. Camry sales have been slowly declining around the world.

That hasn't stopped a new generation (heavily updated) Camry being revealed earlier in 2024. But unless you need the space of an SUV, the Camry is an excellent daily driver of choice.

The handling of the Camry trumps any economical SUV. It's low to the ground, and a bit of fun to roll through corners in.

The seating position is a little on the high side, but there are plenty of creature comforts, available that make piloting this sedan relaxing. It has electric steering adjustment, heated and cooled seats and even a sunroof!

The boot is great for large suitcases, but since it has a traditional trunk opening, it can be limiting for those wanting to transport larger items often.

Rear seats are obviously very comfortable and spacious too.

The hybrid powertrain allows for excellent fuel economy, but the lack of a V6 petrol option might upset a few Camry purists.

I love how the Camry doesn't pretend to be sporty. Instead it's honest for the most part...apart from some false exhaust exits on some models.

It's a strong buy for those who want comfort, practicality, efficiency and reliability with a splash of Japanese luxury without having to fork out extra for a Lexus.

Quite Uncamrylike – Update 12/03/2023: I have had the car in at the Toyota dealer three times for a rotten odour in the cabin that occurs after rain. Last time they had the car for five weeks, confirmed that the odour was present but could not determine the source or fix it. I’ve given up, traded the car and have now joined the 2 year waiting list for a Rav4. Very… Read more

disappointing experience that took the gloss off my initial love for the car.

I have had my 2021 SL Camry Hybrid for 12 months now and am loving it. This is my third new Camry and by far the best.

The most marked improvement over my previous 2015 Camry Hybrid is in the driving characteristics. The ride is super limo soft yet body roll is much more controlled and it glides over bumps. The tyres grip the road and the rear doesn’t skip over mid corner bumps like the previous one did.

This model Camry is much lower than previous Camrys and the cabin is not quite as spacious. There is a transmission tunnel as overseas has an awd version. The roofline is also lower so I have had to adjust my driving position to suit. The cabin finish is elevated far above previous versions and is almost luxurious with leather seats and trim and soft blue ambient lighting at night.

The super cold Toyota air conditioning is appreciated in our Queensland climate as are the seat coolers that I leave permanently on all summer. I did also get ceramic window tint on all windows and reflective tint on the sunroof to help keep the heat out. On a recent 36 degree day I found the Camry cabin to be very pleasantly cool without the climate control fan having to blast to try to maintain it.

The hybrid drivetrain makes city driving easy - the Camry can swiftly zip into a space in traffic and zooms up freeway on ramps with ease. The winding mountain roads in the Gold Coast hinterland are fun for a weekend drive. I have also driven the Camry up to Toowoomba and Stanthorpe and didn’t find it wanting for power and the smooth ride and quiet cabin meant I arrived relaxed and fresh.

This model Camry Hybrid fuel usage is rated at 4.5l/100km but according to the computer my usage has settled to 5.2l/100km so I am happy. I drive using “normal” setting as I find the “eco” setting sucks all the fun out of the driving experience, dulling the acceleration and responsiveness. “Sport” adds weight to the steering and makes the tyres easier to chirp when taking off but doesn’t really add anything worthwhile to the driving experience.

For anyone who does not need an suv this is the perfect car - lovely to drive, spacious, comfortable and economical.

Thoroughly Decent Car – We purchased our Camry new in 2019. As of March 2022 it has travelled 45,000km. So far we have not had a single issue. It does what we expect without hassle. The fuel economy is excellent. Even on interstate trips it does around 5 litres per 100km at the speed limit with the A/C on. The hybrid system and the Atkinson cycle petrol engine combine… Read more

well. We drive it in economy mode all the time which is fine for normal use. Fuel consumption around town is similar. Unlike normal cars, heavy traffic doesn't trash the fuel economy. We use E10 petrol because it needs this or 95RON. The hybrid system has other advantages. When sitting in the car waiting for the school pickup, the air conditioning can be left running with the engine only starting now and then to charge the battery. The car is quite low. You have to keep an eye on ground clearance. The suspension as a result is taught. With the car loaded it's easy to push suspension to its comfort limits. In normal situations it's fine. The steering is nice. The seating could be better. The drivers seat in typical Japanese fashion lacks the adjustability I have in my Falcon. The for-aft movement is electric which is a pain. My wife is shorter than me. I have to stand there in the rain waiting for the seat to motor back before I can get in. A quick bar adjuster would be preferable. I'm 184cm tall. Thankfully the seat goes back far enough. The Sat Nav is unwanted and unnecessarily difficult to use. You can't turn it off or remove it from the main screen. Toyota's method of keeping tabs on the vehicle and how it's driven I'm guessing. Like most people, I navigate with my phone. My other car is a 2013 Falcon XR6 ECOLPI. Also a great car, but the list of gripes, faults and technical issues would be far longer than the Camry. I'm a mechanic, the attention to detail under the bonnet is impressive. Overall, the Camry is an excellent vehicle. I'd recommend it without hesitation.

Surprisingly nice to drive, but Toyota should take a leaf out of Tesla's book – I had to wait until the 2020 model was released to get Apple CarPlay support, which largely papers over the otherwise anaemic built in nav / computer. The 2019 model was missing this feature, which made it a hard-pass. Tesla has figured out that customers don't like to make a >$30K purchase and have its software go out-of-date within a couple of… Read more

years and never get updates. At least with CarPlay, the software will update when my phone updates.

The hybrid model had a non-optional electric sunroof, which made the interior so low that my head touched the headliner even with the seat at the bottom position! I'm only 180cm high, so this seemed to be a very strange design choice by Toyota, making the hybrid variant a hard pass as well. Another issue is that Toyota hybrids notoriously have very aggressive regenerative braking that is not non-adjustable. For comparison, Tesla allows the level to be adjusted. Again, this is just software, where Tesla is lightyears ahead, and Toyota lags very badly.

I got the 2.5 L petrol variant, which is "efficient enough" for my needs. Factoring in the lower price and the relatively good reliability of the Toyota, it was a no-brainer. This is where Tesla is just far too expensive and will never win out, even if electricity is free!

Fundamentally, the Camry has been a very nice car overall, and fantastic relative to its cost. It's smooth to drive, quiet, surprisingly powerful, and has almost every nice-to-have feature I want, but doesn't waste my money on features that are just gimmicks. Radar cruise control has been very useful on long trips, and the mirrors are set up "just right" so that I can drive confidently and safely. I've test-driven many cars, and rented many more, and it's these little things that are often done badly even in very expensive top-end models. Toyota generally gets everything "just right". I can rest my arm on the door panel comfortably, I can drive with one finger if I choose, and the indicators/controls are on the "correct" side for Australia. Not like Mercedes Benz -- they'll charge you twice as much, but sell you a car with the controls mirrored because their primary markets are right-hand drive.

The one thing -- the only thing -- that annoys me about my purchase is that the built-in warnings about excessive speed or upcoming speed cameras uses voice recordings. That go on. And on... for like... a minute. I miss the "ding-ding" sound from my old Mitsubishi, which doesn't interrupt the conversation in the car, or talk over my phone call.

Seriously, Toyota representatives, if you're reading this: It would cost nothing in real dollar terms to add a software feature to allow warnings to be simple "ding" noises instead of some woman reading a paragraph of text. Nothing.

2020 Hybrid Sport Camry – Bought this Camry hybrid from a local dealer. It was a demo with only 12k klm on the clock. Didn't particularly want a hybrid but at the time it was the only choice. Having now had the car for a couple of months I've become a convert. Over all this has been a great choice. My wife and I drove a lot of other cars to compare and found the Toyota the most comfortable and solid feeling of the lot. All the Camry's are fully imported from Japan so the build quality and reliability is great. Both my sons also have Camry's of various ilk and are also very happy with the cars. They are basically bullet proof. Cheap to run and cheap to service. The other good point is their resale value is also good. I think for the price Toyota could have included auto dimming rear view mirrors for this model. Other tan that no complaints.

Grunty touring sedan with all the bells & whistles – 301 BHP. 1,600 kgs. Do the maths. That's more power than a turbo charged Audi RS3 5 cyl/2.5 litre, though admittedly with less torque. Nonetheless, a very smooth ride. Slightly lower, longer and wider than your standard Camry so you won't be taking speed humps @ 60 like my '94 Camry used to. On the outside, everything was fine with regards to finish. Typical Toyota build quality. Had the last one over 25 yrs and still drove like it just came out of the showroom. Can't say that for european cars. Only letdown was the factory issue alloys. Sold those on Facebook with 9 klms on them and bought a set of Speedy Wheels. Looks the part now. Inside. Faultless. Stitched leather interior. Fan vented seats. Radar collision detection. Rear cross traffic alert. Rear Camera res is reasonable but not outstanding. I had better resolution on my work vans when I bought $40 security HD cameras for reversing cameras. HUD is great. Memory settings for two people on the fully electric front seats. Rear USB outlets. The infotaintment/GPS 4 DIN console gives quick access to block level control of voice nav and the like with a mix of touch screen and conventional dial and button controls for aircon, and radio volume and the like, It's a system that works well. if you want a quick result, you can quickly activate aircon or turn down volume with one switch. Radio volume does not automatically reduce when engaging reverse. My work van does that! Sunroof. Spectacular. Engineers have thought of everything with a pop up wind diffuser to eliminate wind turbulence. Speakers are good. Admittedly not as good as say an Audi with17 speakers but good sound nonetheless. Haven't even adjusted the default settings for the equalizer so they must be OK. Haven't tried mp3s yet. Wife sat over the back and said it had the usual Camry legroom. Onroad it's a willing touring sedan. And that's in Normal mode. Haven't tried sports yet. Paddle shift is an option but if you're old school you can pull the shifter right and drive like a normal semi-auto. And yes, it will throw you back into the seat without a lot of provocation. Lights are good. My Corolla SX trade in had the LED inserts that I put in myself as the lights on that were abysmal. This one is outstanding with HID"s. Dual zone aircon. Left and right though. Not a front/rear split. On the plus side you can operate the aircon manually just like a conventional system without having to dial in temperature settings for each side of the car. Another plus. Simplicity meets complexity but you can choose either path. Lane assist is good. Doesn't try to grab the brakes and pull you in the right direction but just gives you an audilble alert. Blind spot monitor. Tick. Emergency automated braking. Tick. All sorts of other warnings for school zones and speed but you can disable all of these. Spare is half size. When it pulls up in the drive you cannot hear the engine. Wife loves it and won't let it go.

Update. Had to run the "half tyre" spare that's provided. First & Last time I do that. 200+ klms from home had run flat damage on my $370 Bridgestone that I had to toss with potentially 80k on a new tyre. 3 lessons to be learned from this experience. 1) Get a 6 sensor tyre pressure monitor for $75 on ebay. One for each car tyre and a couple for the trailer. That would've saved my tyre. 2) Go to my wheel guy and pick up a 205/R16/60 or similar for a spare. It looks like it will fit in the spare well. Measure it when I get back. The half tyre spares are speed rated to 80 k's: not much help on the open road! 3) Go back to the dealer and see why they want me to pay for a wheel alignment on a car that's done 1,500 klms and already showing signs of 'feathering' on both $370 ea front tyres. Obvious sign of "toe out" adjustment IMO. Getting that alignment issue checked by a certified MTA when I get back from this road trip then taking that report back to the dealer. I'm someone who does their own toe in/out adjustments on work vehicles and gets 100k out of front tyres (rear wheel drive).

Toyota Camry Ascent Sport 2018 – We purchased this car for my sister as she is expecting a new baby and her previous car, a 2000 Honda Accord, was getting on in age. Ascent which is the first generation to be produced in Japan. It has all the safety features you can ask for, lovely interior styling and plenty of room. Unfortunately the major drawback we didn’t even consider, nor did the manufacturer or anyone else, was that a capsule for the baby cannot be fitted in the back seat. This is because the head rests are not removable or adjustable as they are formed as part of the entire back seat. This means the strap that hooks on the rear parcel shelf is at risk of slipping off the head rest and loosing tension. We spoke with Toyota and they refused to assist advising that they cannot be expected to design their cars for all aftermarket products. I feel that this is unacceptable as they are marketed as a family sedan. Maxi Cosi, the producer of the capsule, advised they have not had this issue before and after some research advised that their product nor any competitors product could be fitted in the Camry due to the design of the rear seats and headrest. We have been advised that in the future there are certain car seats that can be fitted however that won’t be an option for my sister until the baby is 6-8 months old. In summary a great value car for the money, however it not suitable for the main reason for our purchase. I’ll keep this updated with our progress.

in the ACT and for the price there really is so many features which make a comfortable driving experience. I now won't be able to live without a HUD in any of my future cars! So good features, nice to look at but the drive is good enough but as you'd expect it doesn't have enough punch to elicit any sort of excitement. The excitement comes when you look at the fuel usage, and after around 5000km I am running at under 5.5L/100km which is putting a few extra dollars in the pocket. Fixed price service averaging $195 a year for the first five years also makes this car seem even more economical.

So if you want to save some money I'd recommend not going down the Euro path and pop into a dealership and take one of the Camry hybrids for a spin. It might surprise you.

Camry Ascent Sport Hybrid – What a fantastic car. The Hybrid comes in three modes; Eco, Normal & Sport but has grunt in all three modes. I just clocked up 1000kms but driven city and country without any issues. Very comfortable and and excellent replacement to my 2013 Camry Hybrid which I just gave to my son. The GPS, driver assists and styling of the car is excellent and is… Read more

by far the best car I've ever driven. There are even alerts for Red light / speed cameras and school zones. Eco displays and lane departure warnings are good too, but it blows my mind when you get a warning for icy roads as well.

GPS hoax – I think most of you will be as staggered to know as I that Toyota only issue map updates for there in car GPS once every 3 years. It comes with safety camera alerts, school zones, etc. My wife has a Ford Mondeo which has free lifetime maps updated yearly. How many changes to these and to road layouts happen over 3 years. Tomtom. Also the GPS in the Camry is too hard to navigate through its latout compared to portable GPS units. And then Toyota want to charge the same price as it would cost to buy a new portable GPS to update their maps every 3 years. Also, this was previously easily done via an SD card on previous models but that is not an option anymore. The dealer must do it. You’ll quickly get sick of the woman’s voice telling you about school zone warnings. You get one message when approaching, one when you enter and one when you leave the school zone. Tomtom can tell the time when school zones are active but Camry can’t so you get these 3 warning messages 24/7. Toyota, I am losing the feeling.

Toyota Camry – Easy to drive, comfortable, lots of space in the back, plenty of room for legs. No noise at all. I like the colour black for the interior with the leather dashboard. Running cost is like 50 a week for petrol which is very economical. Maintenance is simple not too expensive to replace parts.  Show details
