Very easy to get and pay for coverage. But when it comes to a claim require you to jump through tonnes of hoops and ridiculous info. I had trouble getting everything together (and of course having to mail it) while in Australia. I'd hate to think what would have happened if I had to make my claim from when I was in Cambodia, Laos, or Vietnam.

This company is very reluctant to honor a claim. Their online form is very restrictive and you must be very careful to read the fine print. A bag containing my medication disappeared and I was not sure exactly when it went missing...at the hotel I departed in the morning or when my bags were being taken to my room at the next hotel. I called WorldNomads and the lady told me to go to a doctor for a prescription and then to send them the receipts. I followed her instructions and then filled out the online claim form. There was no provision to add...any attachments. I assumed that they would get back to me asking for them. Instead I received an email saying that they refused my claim. I was told to call someone at an insurance company called 'Cerberus' which appears to be the real insurance company behind WorldNomads. The 'supervisor' told me that they would not be honoring the claim because the bag had to be 'damaged' or 'stolen'...not 'lost'. I got the feeling that they will use any tactic to avoid paying a claim. I have been traveling a lot over the past 20 years for my work. That was the first time I used these people and I would never use them again.
- World Nomads Travel Insurance
Terrible product! Will never use this company again
I bought World Nomads insurance, top of the line, to make sure I was covered for all problems. I got a severe case of a strange dizziness while traveling but needed to extend my stay for work so tried to see several doctors all while also extending my insurance so I could get treated with medication. I extended it twice and gave World Nomad a total of 500$ for 4 months of travel just to find out that since I extended the insurance basically all my bills were considered for treating a pre-existing condition. Very astute.
Anyhow, this is good...if you have a major accident, break a body part or need to go to the emergency room. Anything other than that is no good. I strongly discourage anyone from buying this. There are much better companies out there that even treat real pre-existing conditions from before you even bought the insurance for the same price. It's a terrible company. Jade Jossen
I called them, they told me I would be covered after two days during an ongoing trip. I made a claim for an incidence on day 3, but not full 72 hours, and they are denying me the claim..
- Travel Insurance - Explorer Plan
Terrible, definitely would not purchase again.
I am traveling and studying in Europe for almost four month so I purchased a travel insurance just in case. Two month in my credit card information got stolen and someone used my card for a purchase of 200 euro. I was told I am not covered for that and I should seek help from the bank. Okay.
Just two days a go, on my trip to Spain, my luggage was stolen on a bus. I thought well as least I am covered for personal belonging theft. Well, apparently not. They explained to me that this incident is a "simple theft" as I left my personal belonging u...
- World Nomads Travel Insurance
Extremely Disappointed. $2,000 claimed and only $48 offered.
My wife and I had a disaster of a vacation. On our way to Nepal, a plane crashed and completely shut down the airport! This happened on 3/4/15 - the very day we were supposed to fly in. What terrible luck right?
As a result, we were stranded in Kunming, China for 3 nights and 4 days. It was a horrible experience. We were stuck in a dingy hotel with people smoking in the hallways. Everyday we returned to the airport, only to find that our flight was cancelled yet again. So we would return to our sketchy hotel with no wi-fi.
Our airline ...refused to re-route our flight. They told us to contact our booking agent. Our booking agent told us they couldn't help, only the airline could. So both companies blamed the other and we received zero help. The only option was to WAIT in China for an unknown amount of days or even weeks until the kathmandu airport re-opened. Our vacation was dwindling away and we didn't want to be stuck in China for one more second let alone another week. So finally AFTER FOUR DAYS of stress and sickness, we gave in. We bought new plane tickets and completely re-routed our vacation. We turned to World Nomads, hoping they would be our safety net. Well after a month and a half of phone calls, emails, receipts, documents, and waiting around for a decision (and then for an appeal decision) we are still out of luck. We claimed over $2,000 worth of expenses. World Nomads only offered $48 of assistance.
No meal refund at all
The worst insurance ever not only every claim got an excess of $100 but in case of illness not even a meal allowance or a bottle of water just hospital food! What about the other family members expect to be out of pocket with this insurance!
Drugged and robbed...no coverage despite police report
On a sleeper bus from Nah Trang to Saigon I was drugged and slept for 7 hours straight, and was shakey and off-balance all day. During my drug induced sleep my phone, wallet, and contents, as well as my headphones were stolen. After going through the hassle of dealing with corrupt police in Vietnam, I was contacted by World Nomads after a week. Your claim was denied as "my stuff was not actively monitored, supervised or stored away". Ehhh they stole the phone from my pocket, the headphones from my EARS and the wallet from my backpack which was ...in between my legs. I am terribly sorry but I wonder why I even have travel insurance if it does not cover me being drugged and robbed. Thanks World Nomads you portray yourself exactly as any other insurance company.
Worst travel insurance excess on every claims
I was misleading With the layout of the page and took the more expensive option thinking I choose the one with no excess none of my medical claims were taken all fall under the excess waste of time...
Unethical company, read the very small letters of your policy
While traveling through Europe with my wife, our passports were stolen from the room. A week was spent dealing with our hosts, the police and the embassy - making us lose our pre booked trip through Spain.
A few months later, we were very surprised to discover that World Nomads travel insurance didn't cover the kind of theft that happened to us.
According to the World Nomads travel insurance policy, a passport is considered stolen only if the thieves did enough collateral damage while stealing it. A Passport is considered damaged only if ...its damaged by nothing less than a natural disaster. And its considered lost only if there is another company responsible for the loss, so there will be someone else to pay the claim. On their web site World Nomads are quick to promise: "If your passport is stolen, lost or damaged while on your travels overseas, there’s cover to claim for the replacement costs to get you back on the road and back to your adventures" http://service.worldnomads.com/customer/portal/articles/962317--my-passport-s-been-stolen-lost but when you read the fine print, you discover that in reality their policy applies for less than 5% of the stolen/lost/damaged cases. How convenient. If thats not unethical conduct, I don't know what is
Very misleading representations, terrible service
I bought this insurance for a trip to the People's Republic of China. The description sounds excellent, but there are several problems you need to know about. First, they say that they have a one-call number you can access that provides immediate assistance anywhere in the world, and that all you have to do is to call them collect. Unfortunately, you cannot call collect from within China, so that service turns out to be useless for that country. Second, I had some things stolen while in China, so I filed a claim online. I carefully filled ...out the forms immediately after the loss, got a confirmation email, and heard nothing back for over a month. I finally called them when I got back to the US, and the woman on the phone informed me that the online claim submission form NEVER WORKS. I noted that there was no indication of this problem on the site, and she said, "Yes, they really have to do something about that." I asked whether they could at least send me a copy of the information I submitted online so that I could copy it to the hard copy of the claim I would have to make, and she said she didn't know because she was the after hours person and did not have full access to my file, but it looked like they had nothing on file (despite my confirmation email). I am horrified to think what might have happened if there were a medical emergency and I really needed urgent assistance.
A complete waste of $700
World Nomads is a joke. I have no idea how they have so many positive reviews?! I went backpacking in SE Asia for 6 months- bought the more expensive package bc I was going to be scuba diving. I fell ill twice- once with typhoid and once with a blood infection. I called in first thing from Cambodia to make sure that I had everything necessary for a claim. I was told to get receipts- that's it. Then in the Philippines, my phone and iPad were broken by our jeepney driver. I immediately contacted WN again to find out what was needed- I was told do...cumentation of items (pics that they were broken) and documentation of cost. I even sent pics from the Philippines that showed it happened while I was there, and they couldn't claim it happened upon return. My pics of my iPad had the date displayed on the iPad. When I got home and started to file, I saw that I needed a whole lot more documentation Pathan what was told to me. So, I spent many hours printing out my bank statements, travel itinerary, and getting a form signed that said my iPhone was not repairable. I was told I'd hear back 7-10 days later--- they did not say business days. Almost 2 weeks later, I was told I provided insufficient information for both claims and that they needed a report from the jeepney driver in the Philippines that the electronics were broken by its employees. It also said I had to provide proof of medical insurance, when I already stated on the form that I did not have insurance! I don't know if anyone has been to the Philippines, but requesting a loss report from the jeepney company is a joke! He works for himself and does not speak English. There is no company. When I explained this to my claims rep Kathy- she said to get a report from the "resort"- hello! I'm a backpacker. I stayed in a hut on the beach with locals who also did not speak English let alone have a reception desk or anyone who would type up a loss report. Again, none of this was asked for when I called in from the Philippines. In my reply, I sent a picture of the actual jeepney to show how basic it is and clearly does not work for any company. I also sent Kathy the name of my last doctor I had seen when I did have insurance, per her request. I received word today that my electronics claim is denied, because there is no report! A. I couldn't get one and B. When I asked what I needed, I was never told to get one or I would have hunted someone, anyone, down to write one up or at least sign it for me. Case closed- no reimbursement. For the health claim, I was told they needed the name of my last doctor- which I sent to Kathy and even got a response from her, but they said they never received. This is truly a nightmare . I am moving to Cambodia next month and will not only not use World Nomads, but will literally warn any traveler I come across (which will be a lot bc I am working in a guest house). Shame on you, World Nomads. I basically handed over $700 to you for nothing.
Absolutely Horrible, Tedious, BS.
We deliberated for a long time over which insurance company to choose, and unfortunately for us we fell for the fake positive reviews for world nomads and paid about 200$ more than we would have paid for another company. My partner came down with a kidney infection while travelling in thailand, and world nomads has been utterly terrible!!!!!!! Sending us "required" forms 7 hours after we went to the hospital (and she had called world nomads before going, and was told she didn't need the forms), making you photocopy and mail every single documen...t instead of scanning (photocopies/prints are actually very difficult to find and expensive in bangkok!), having to wait 2- 6 months to get the money back, less than the actual amount being put on the claims form sent to us... The list goes on and on, what an absolute effing headache. And what a mistake we have made to choose them. My girlfriend is sick, stressed, and frustrated. For shame. Terrible.
An absolute disgrace! avoid at all costs!
I have worked in the travel industry for over 10 years and I have never come across a more disgraceful insurance company! I had a years policy and paid EXTRA to insure my laptop, I had also previously had insurance with them for the past 2 years and had never made a claim. When my laptop was snatched and stolen in London from the hotel they refused to pay to replace it even though I had a police report, video footage, hotel security report, report from the travel guide who was present AND the proof of purchase!. They claimed because it was snat...ched in a public place it was not covered. Not only were they unhelpful but they were also rude and abrupt. I will never use them again and the hundreds of clients I have every year will also be told to avoid this company at all costs! Absolutely disgusting!
Do not recommend
World Nomads is terrible . I got stung by a jellyfish really badly and had to fly home to have surgery. I called world nomads almost every single day trying to claim my money back but nobody would help me out. They kept transferring me to someone but No one would pick up so I kept leaving messages but no one would phone me back. 3 months later of constantly trying to get it resolved, I finally get my money back. Not all of my money but most if it so I left it at that. They are quick to take your money but not quick to give it back. I do not recommend them as It has been so frustrating with them.
Took too long to get money back
Useless stuff. Will not cover theft of personal/belongings. Insurance is handled by subcontractors who will not care about your issues. You might risk being left stranded in the middle of nowhere and then they will tell you to seek help from another side or call your embassy. Never again and i hope this colpany go bust.
Repeatedly interrogated me like a criminal for hours when injured.
I had a moped accident in Thailand and had bad leg injury . The insurance company phoned me repeatedly day and night asking names and addresses of people i had eaten with .. interrogated me about names and addresses of people i had met at yoga while holidaying and generally harassed me constantly with so many calls asking me same stupid questions completely irrelevant to claim. it was so extreme for hours and hours every day to the point i was much more upset by the insurance companies constant interrogations from 3 different people calling...from Australia , England and Thailand than i was from the inuries incurred. They woud still not confirm coverage for my medical treatment or new flights days later. Really treated me like a criminal and expected me to be on phone or sending faxes emails doumentation over and over for about 10 hours a day while i was trying to rest with inuries. It was so extrem e i will take them to court for harassment. It left me very stressed and anxious and led to such trouble dealing with being on crutches alone with no coverage at all alone injured in Thailand. No cover was granted when i had no immediate cash was forcd to get public transport on crutches and go to very basic hospital while they would not confirm cover to get taxis or go to decent hospital .
Still waiting to hear from you world nomads
My son contacted this company the minute he had a problem. They have drip fed requests for documentation ever since. We give them what they want, even though they say they haven't received it and then they ask for evidence from a different source about a different concern.
Both the claims department and the complaints department have been asked to contact us about our son's situation, but we haven't heard from either of them. Maybe this post will inspire them to contact us!
Paid a top premium for appropriate cover. Deliberately drawn out process.
Absoloutely shocking experience
Took out comprehensive travel insurance and speciality insurance for my phone and laptop that I was taking with me through my Asia travels. Pretty standard. Within the first week of being overseas I was the victim of car theft where my phone was stolen. My bag was hidden underneath a seat in a car while we were sight seeing and the car window smashed and everything inside stolen, including my phone. I immediately launched an insurance claim thinking it would be fine as I was the victim of crime and had speciality insurance on my phone only for ...the claim to be rejected under the basis of "it was your own fault for leaving it in a car". Please explain to me, when do my items, when victim to criminal activity not become my fault? So if I am walking down the street and my bag snatched, is that my fault also for carrying my bag with me? Absoloutely shocking, unsympathetic, money rip off insurance service.
Bad company, a disgrace do not waste your money!
My daughter had a skiing accident in Canada and was carried off the mountain.Nomads deemed that her injury was not an emergency, so refused to cover her, although she could not walk. The policy we purchased, actually used snow boarding as an example for sale of the policy, have a fall on the mountain we have got you covered! I looked at policy detail,no where did it say you had to be dying. So a major ACL injury the refused and chose not cover even when ad's and even in the fine print it stated this is included, as portrayed themselves as a...snow boarders one stop cover, however it is only when go to the second company, difficult to access, however these companies on sell their policy to. Lloyd's is the insurance underwritter for them,or others they chose from, this excursion is put in print and states the cover injures. This is so poor form! I contacted the CEO and asked him if he would like his child left in agony and no surgery. He agreed to do an MRI,they stated that the do not pay for anything, like this as you must be dying and anything the pay for must be for an emergency.the MRI showed major damage and surgery was required.she had to get to London which was hard,no help given to get there, but had a friend was in London, to at least care for her whilst we arranged major surgery with nomads I behind the scenes was trying to get this claim accepted, went to a lawyer, who felt we had a case but it would take time and money. When we asked them to arrange it,the refused saying they were considering it but said now she was in the uk they don't have to and said she can access the NHS in the uk and not insurance. This would take at least 2years plus. Even though a specialist said if the surgery was left the knee's recovery and long term function would be poor if left. I promise you the ads all said knee injures were covered, small print as well,it was just when you look at the 2nd underwriter you see any variance but it still said she was covered. The company was hard to contact and David the case manager took weeks to come back,so terrible. If I could sue them I would for the trauma this caused. we bought her home at our expense$ 5,000. Nothing back from Nomads.we did everything by the book,it then took 6 months to get the 800 for the MRI back, lots of email, time put in, a lot pain.paid top dollar for nothing. please do not risk these people The will do anything not to payout
Awful experience; complete letdown
I, unfortunately, got quite sick during my travels. I was very careful to keep in contact with W.N. throughout my trip to ensure that I was providing them with everything they needed in a timely manner. They assured me, multiple times, that I could send my paperwork to them after returning home, even though they knew I wouldn't be back home for multiple months. However, after being reassured many times, I followed their directions and waited until I returned home to send them my paperwork (receipts, scanned papers, etc.) I sent it all in a larg...e manila envelope, however the envelope was returned to me shortly after they sent me an email saying that I had waited too long to send everything in (I sent them in several days after returning home). Instead of being refunded the hundreds of dollars I was supposed to, I got nothing. I'd give 0 stars, if I could.
Another Travel Insurance Rip-off
Bought the policy well before my 2 month trip to Europe. Read through it and thought it covered me for cancellation of flights and costs of alternative transport. But when a flight was cancelled and I would have missed a 2 week cruise I had to buy an expensive alternative flight and hire a car to make the ship on time. When I got home and tried to claim Cerberus pointed out that my policy didn't cover cancellation costs after I left home, although the new policy I had to buy to extend my trip by 2 days did include this. The exclusion was not ex...plicitly stated, but their legal weasel words get them off the hook. I wont ever buy another of their policies and I strongly recommend that you avoid them. Copuldn't extend the policy by 2 days. Had to buy a new, expensive 2 day policy. Then had my claim rejected.
they're hopeless.... my phone (with cash in the pocket) and camera were stolen while on holiday, a pure case of pickpocketing, and even though i had the more expensive cover with worldnomads they wouldn't cover the theft since they insist that the cover only applies "when the theft is observed". it seems like that phrase is the 'get out of jail card' used no matter the situation. unless you're physically tackled and robbed, nothing seems to be covered. the case was closed in one simple line saying : "In accordance with our policy conditions Art.... 21.1 c, the insurance covers theft of valuables carried on or by the insured when the theft is observed while being committed. " i emailed back explaining it was pick pocketing and not a case of mislaid items (as the first email was suggesting) and the reply was the same saying "Please understand that the insurance covers theft when the items are stolen from you while you are carrying them, when the theft is observed, see section 21.1.c. Furthermore there is an exclusion in section 21.3.m, explaining that the insurance does not cover simple theft where you do not observe the theft occurring. " so while i was carrying the items i didn't see whoever stole them from my bag ... very efficient insurance cover! first and last time ... Never again. that i could get it online
World nomads never again part II
Id like to express my deep disgust and disappointment - to say the least - with world nomads health insurance. After researching for an insurance that I thought would be the best insurance to keep me safe- and paying for your most expensive plan- I found that I got not only the wrong insurance, but the most prejudicious I could ever imagine.
I had an incident and had to go to see a doctor in the US. Knowing I had insurance - since I'd paid for one - I went to a private clinic during my trip. Based on the symptoms I had, I though I had an UTI (...
World Nomads.... never again!
Hi, ha, world nomads, the popular insurance company eh? not for me..they left me for dead in pokhara Nepal.I became ill with exhaustion and other ailment from a parasitic infection, something like giardia or cyclospora yet due to nepals sub par medical facilities I returned home-on my own accord, world nomads only made it more stressful for me, being in a weak condition they insisted I provide bureaucratic paperwork before making a decision which they ultimately denied to help..they failed to call me back numerous times and insisted i visit a t...errible hospital ( a general nepali hosp) instead of the western standard clinic i wished to be transported to..they refused to fly me to kathmandu,so i had to arrange and pay for my own flight back to kathmandu as i was too weak to travel the 7 hr bus ride back..not only that, they didnt even offer for one of their agents to come see me in pokhara.they then sent a email saying my claim was closed,so basically left me to cope by myself..now they wont even reinburse me for costs I outlayed in the hospitals etc...VERY VERY BAD UK service, not surprid since one doctor in nepal informed me that UK travel insurance companies are the worst, many still owe him money for patients he helped..
Questions & Answers
I notice that all the 4 and 5 star reviews are from 2+ years ago, but recently, all the reviews are 1 star. What's happened to the claims process in that time for this to be so consistent?
Hi I'm Hanum, a Malaysian. I'm going to Australia for holiday while pregnant. My question is am I eligible to buy World Nomads travel insurance? Does the World Nomads cover pregnancy complication? Thank you.
