I’ve swapped over a 3.3lt f250 for the new 4.2lt F300 and have to say, all-in-all I’m very happy with the change!
The benefits far outweigh any negatives, but I’ll start there.
The engine is noisier, idle, mid range, WOT, the DB figure is greater. Sounds to me like induction roar, and probably also due to the plastic engine pan, and a cowling that feels quite flimsy due to the thin material it’s made from.
The engine looks way more ‘Honda’ than Yammy, and while I don’t mind the current model look, a few people have commented that the engine looks rather funny.
Lighter by a big margin.
Throttle response is incredible.
Gear selection and throttle control with DBW is a revelation.
Huge mid range grunt.
Huge increase in speed at all RPM’s running same propeller.
Improved economy - increase in km / lt consumed.
No gear selection ‘clunk’
On my boat the WOT speed went from 72kmh (F250) to 80kmh (F300), cruising speed at 4500rpm went from 52kmh (F250) to 61kmh, running same prop.
RR price is approx. 30k plus fitting and controls.
