1 out of 5, reviewed on Jul 26, 2017

Same as other reviewers heat exchanger coil has failed now running on booster at great expense, avoid at all costs. The local rheem agent had no idea which model I had even after giving serial and model numbers. Found a local fridge tech how was very familiar with this piece of rubbish his words..

Fails to heat water but indicates operating?

1 out of 5, reviewed on Jul 25, 2017

We decided to purchase this Heat pump $3800 installed in July 2009 on good advice from a very reputable plumber, he recommended it as it came with renewable energy certificate benefits (rebate)=$891
Dec 2010 we received a recall letter and were told a tech would carry out a specified scope of work? and if I hear a Loud Hammering noise turn it off? but may take 7 weeks to fix?
..it's still noisy..
Aug 2011 tech replaced the Control Box, pump corroded and replaced ...
July 2013 Tech changed Valve...
We have been without hot water too many t
imes to mention along the way, we have had enough of this problematic heat pump!!
It was new technology at the time but over the years seems to have caused more problems then its worth...
We are at our wits end as it cost$$$ so much to buy and now it's happening again ..!!
It went into heating unit only for few days (cold weather) then nothing (no led) a couple of times, turned off and on at switch to reset, now it's showing 3x green flashes (working) still no hot water!!
I was optimistic and hoped it was making hot water!!!!
Now it's Friday afternoon...sigh
I rang Rheem and they told me to get my local tech again as they don't handle Toowoomba?
Can't get anyone till Monday ..!!!
I tried another reset today now it shows 2x red (compressor failure)
This machine is doing nothing it won't even go into backup Heating...
72hrs and counting without hot water now...
Extremely regret ever getting this Heat pump, it has been a problem for which seems eternity now!!
and yes it always seems to be during winter!!!
Sick n Tired and will never recommend this type of system to anyone!!

Terrible

1 out of 5, reviewed on Jul 14, 2017

We bought this heat pump in April 2009 for a cost of $3090.00 plus had to add the installation cost on top of this, it had been repaired under warranty, but now 8 years later water is leaking badly out of the top of unit and it is very noisy. I am very upset about that after this time (8 years) we will now be up for a new not water system when we paid so much I would think they would last longer than this. I would never get another heat pump as they just do not last and cost too much.

Why are they still being sold ?

1 out of 5, reviewed on Jul 13, 2017

i don't know if I can write anything new that other reviewers have not already covered, but I will have a go.
We bought this unit in June 2009 and the first breakdown was in May 2012. Fortunately, it was still one week within warranty (rather than the usual one week out of warranty).
The unit continued to work reasonably well for the next four years, but performance in Winter was poor (more our fault by having Offpeak 1). The unit failed again 14 months ago and was again repaired (at our cost of $200 by Rheem).
We changed over to Offpeak 2
only 3 weeks ago and the HWS was performing well until three days ago. Once again it stopped and there was not even a diagnostic LED on the panel to tell what was wrong. I thought that a relay had failed in the power supply due to the recent change over to Offpeak 2. A visit from Endeavour Energy (in 3 hours) confirmed that there was power to the unit. Once again something had failed in the HWS.The HWS always seem to break down in Winter for some reason !!

I am now waiting for for the refrigeration technician to (hopefully) repair the unit so that I can have a hot shower after three days. I will then arrange for a quote for a new Offpeak resistive element HWS.

I did consider another heat pump HWS from Hydrotherm, but because they are located in Brisbane only, I was concerned about the quality of the service here in Sydney. The warranty periods are generous and the reviews here on Product Review are excellent. Of course, their long term reliability is yet to be tested.
The money we have managed to save in running costs over the years has been seriously eroded by the cost of out of warranty maintenance services.
The heat pump technology is good in principle, but the execution by some maunufacturers (esp. Rheem) leaves a lot to be desired. I wish Hydrotherm all the best with their units, but i will never buy another Rheem heat pump even if they offered a 20 year unconditional warranty.

Water too hot

5 out of 5, reviewed on Jul 12, 2017

Im an electrician, I couldn't adjust the temp on the old thermostat so I replaced it but the overload on the thermostat trips every day. The water is extremely hot. Looking at the circuit diagram I'm now thinking maybe the control board. Could this be the cause?
this is the first fault we have had with this system.

Ripped Off Rheem

1 out of 5, reviewed on Jul 05, 2017

I am fed up with the noise of this Rheem Air Sourced Heat Pump Model 55132507. It really is rubbish and not that efficient. If it didn't cost me so much money I would have got rid of it. Rheem did some repair work not requested by me and has been terrible since. First night after repairs it made a Big Bang. Long story Rheem couldn't get repairer back to fix because it's not his job. Got local contractor and he was rubbishing Rheem for there service treatment and wasn't really interested. Called service recently and no Rheem service guys with in 3 hours. Not good enough, Yes I am dissapointed Rheem.

Fails EVERY winter.

1 out of 5, reviewed on Jun 27, 2017

For the last few years our heat pump has failed every winter. We pay the few hundred dollars for a tech to come out, he replaces one component or another, and it works. Until the next winter.
Worst is, because of the way the fault system works, we don't know it's not working properly until I notice the fan isn't running, or until we get a MASSIVE electricity bill.

Worst water heater!

1 out of 5, reviewed on Jun 22, 2017

This water heater has done nothing but cost us money and let us down since we've had it. Within the first week of moving in the first unit failed and was replaced. We've had repairs done every couple of years since then. Looks like its on element again. Will be making yet another call to have it repaired. Not impressed.

over it

1 out of 5, reviewed on Jun 17, 2017

Whilst love the energy efficiency of this unit I'm sick of it letting us down, have had bits fixed & replaced under warranty. Its now well over 5yr's old & out of warranty but wouldn't recomend anyone get one from new, not worth the hassle & not with young family & seems to let us down when the cold weather hits & on a weekend. Think its time to replace with something solid & reliable.

Unimpressed

2 out of 5, reviewed on Jun 10, 2017

The heat pump is quite noisy when in operation especially when positioned in the vicinity of a bedroom window, but the worst quality is in the production of hot water. We live in the Northern Rivers of NSW which is not a cold area, but as soon as the summer heat drops off, the heat pump production of hot water is pathetic. I have replaced the thermostat without any improvement so we take a shower without adding any cold water to the mix. We need to replace this unit but the options will be an expensive solution.

Rheem heat pump mpi 325=peace of junk.it was a problem from the beginning .pump was faulty and very noisy just after instillation , rheem technician came and fixed it for no charge , recently the the pump started playing up again sometimes it runs for about six hours non stop and other times it doesn't run at all and the unit switches to element (scary power bill).rheem sent a technician and his best advise was : wait till it dies and then buy a new one(very professional ,isn't he?)

ABSOLUTE WORST OF WORST HOT WATER SYSTEMS IN AUSTRALIA.

1 out of 5, reviewed on Apr 28, 2017

Our first Heat Pump by Rheem was installed in 2009 when our house was build. In 2011 it stopped working all together. The unit was replaced by Rheem under warranty. In 2013 it stop working and after fighting with Rheem they replaced the from unit at no cost us but we had to pay for installation of it. Now we have not have hot water for over a month. Called local electrician to have a look. He spoke to Rheem Tech support whom informed I'm the it would need to be re gassed. He called refrigeration tech to come and re gas it, which he did. Spent few hours monitoring and making sure it wasn't leaking the gas. All was good for two days and now no hot water again. It has costed us over $500 so far for these two guys and now Rheem is telling us to get an plumber and thats best they can do. BTW this was by their Customer Relations Manager. She couldn't except the fact that it is not expectable for customers to pay over $4000 for initial unit and then to pay for all these repairs. She said there is nothing Rheem can do except to say SORRY. THREE UNITS IN SEVEN YEARS! What you save on heating cost and that why one buys these unit, you spend on repairs. How does that work out?????

Rheem MPI 325 is rubbish

1 out of 5, reviewed on Apr 23, 2017

Unit is very noisy, expensive and difficult to repair, Rheems owns recommended technicians don't even know how to fix these units. Unit keeps tripping out (Red light flashes twice) Now will not reset at all. only had it fixed last week. Save yourself a lot of pain and expense and buy another brand. If you unlucky enough to already have one of these units don't bother repairing it, you will be wasting further money.

A piece of junk

1 out of 5, reviewed on Apr 21, 2017

Most frustrating piece of junk I have installed in 2009. It was recalled in 2011 then multiple failure to the heat pump Compressor .Many many cold showers and not to mention the pain of having to do lots of other things without hot water. The call to have it serviced caused me money because it was out of warranty! It is a joke to have only 2 year warranty on the system. Maybe they knew it was a piece of junk. I would recommend buying this heat pump water heater from Rheem.

I have a 551325 heat pump model the normal lights flashing about once per 2 seconds but the pump and fan is not running and there is no hot water any ideas

Phill Chadwick asked on Jun 24, 2017

Answer this

Have you pressed reset button

Thanks Mick
But sadly no joy with reset button as there is no reset button on my model. I actual found two versions of the manual one with a reset one without see below
http://www.rheem.com.au/Assets/1592/1/installationinstructions-Rheemheatpumpmodule325410-126558RevH-2012May.pdf

I have taken the front cover off located the control box but it does not have a reset button on the bottom left side as shown in the manual I found on the internet.
Thanks again Mick for your input

What seems to be occurring after reading both manuals cover to cover is
A single green LED flash indicating Call for heating received – system checks performed Note: unit may wait and continue flashing until compress or has cooled from its last operation

Does this for more than an hour or so and then sometimes the unit starts as normal with

3 x green LED pulses indicating Heat pump operation – compressor and fan running
which they are then after about 15 minutes the booster element kicks and fans stop in as indicated by a

long green LED pulse Heating unit on – ambient air temperature below 3°C to 5°C or above 45°C to 55°C (we've had some cold nights but Lunch time Sydney is hardly less than 5°C) Energy meter is spinning madly indicating high power consumption

It does this until the top half of the unit heats up and the thermostat opens and everything shuts down including the indicating LEDs, Does this for the 45 to 90 minute restart period then the cycle starts over again.

Some times it just goes straight to booster mode

Im thinking we ran out of hot water because we only have half a tank capacity while its running like this. Starting to sound like a heat pump fault maybe low gas Im hoping

Reading the other posts in the forum is not filling my heart with joy though. Looking forward to the cheery robot response from Rheem

hi our Rheem hotwater system sounds like an air con unit often during the day and in the evening. infact we though it was neighbors air conditioning running. What could this be?

kerri asked on Jun 21, 2017

Answer this

Dear Kerri,

Thank you for your question. If you could please contact our service centre on 13 10 31, our customer service team will assist accordingly.

Kind regards,
Rheem Australia

Hi Kerri,
I had the same problem with my unit where It would run for about 6 hours non stop and then completely stops for the rest of the day and the element kicks in heating the water resulting in high power bill.
After about 2 months the pump stopped altogether and only the element was working.a rheem technician (refrigeration mechanic ) came to inspect and he advised me that nothing could be done about it.
I either had to change the pump unit at a reduced cost of around $1800 or wait until the whole heater completely dies and then replace with a new unit. GOOD LUCK.
Ps:I got rid of mine before it died and replaced it with a gas unit

It is an air conditioner, I understand the unit extracts heat out of the air to heat your hot water. Unfortunately mine doesn't heat the water sufficiently to produce a decent shower. Don't you love Rheem's open response, as a public response would inform a lot rather than keeping it personal.
