No Hot water - Not impressed !!!!!!!!!

1 out of 5, reviewed on Oct 17, 2017

I purchased a Rheem Heat Pump 55132507 in 2009. I was told it was a good product from another customer. There's is still working, mine isn't. I called Rheem Oct 2017, out of warranty! They gave me a number for a Rheem contractor to look at it. No, he doesn't look at these!!! So, how do I get my heater fixed. (Can't afford it, showering out of buckets for nearly 1 month now). My parents had a Rheem, lasted for years and years. I'm a 2nd generation Rheem customer. Very sad.

Noisy fan from day one.

1 out of 5, reviewed on Oct 16, 2017

We have built a brand new home and decided to install a Rheem and from day one the fan is very noisy. It appears as he fan rotates it slightly vibrates against the outer casing making an annoying noise , I have had it looked at it twice by the builder , I still cannot get a peaceful night sleep without shutting the windows. Other than the noise complaint it has been ok.

No hot water - appalling 'service' from Rheem

1 out of 5, reviewed on Oct 08, 2017

We have a heat pump 544325 - no hot water. Tech arrives and converts to the element advising he can't do any more and to call Rheem Service again. No worry ... the $143 call out fee will be refunded against future repair costs. We call Rheem Service and after 30 mins on the phone the 'service agent' offers to provide me the number for a contractor to come and have a look! And no, there's no offset of the initial costs and there will be another call out fee as the contractor doesn't work for Rheem with the parts to be somewhere north of $770, but they don't know ... But would I like to replace the unit - that will be around $2000! Whether Rheem choses to employ staff or use contractors is up to it, however customer service isn't handing out the phone number for a repair man. I can not believe the poor service offered by Rheem and, had I read these reviews (>300 of 330 rating as Bad or Terrible), I would not have bought a Rheem product.

Ripped off!

1 out of 5, reviewed on Sep 20, 2017

I regret that I have to choose a star at all.
Will never buy from Rheem again. Continual problems that were never fixed in the short warranty period. Nearly 4k for a unit that is 7 years old.
Now they want $140 just to look at it! And then I'll be up for parts and labor.
FU Rheem!

Expected this unit to last longer

2 out of 5, reviewed on Sep 07, 2017

I've always thought heat pumps are a good idea for larger houses equipped with solar power. I bought this unit based on Rheem's reputation for quality gas storage systems. This system worked well for about 7 years, requiring only a new anode around 5 years in as recommended. The fan was less noisy than my Fujitsu reverse cycle air con.
But my Rheem has failed at just past the 7-year mark. My electrician traced the fault to one of the heat pump components. I was going to pay the $150 to get a Rheem technician to take a look until I read all the bad reviews on this site in similar circumstances. Given the high likelihood of expensive repairs (I'm guessing between $500-$1k total costs), with no confidence they will extend overall unit remaining life, I've chosen a Quantum 200L compact heat pump replacement unit for $1,883 fully installed, old unit removed. Quantum heat pumps are more efficient based on the tech sheets and seem to have a much better reputation with the plumbers I spoke to and reviews on this site. That said, my first preference would be a Hydrotherm heat pump, but they do not currently supply the WA market.

Failed again...

1 out of 5, reviewed on Aug 28, 2017

Similar story to many others here. We have this unit at our rental property and it has failed twice. The first time it was fixed under warranty but took over a week for a service agent to attend costing us that time in rent. It's now failed again after 2 years with same issue a compressor fault. This fault stops it from even switching to backup heating mode which equal tenants with no hot water. To date this unit has cost me over $1500 in lost rent and service call out fees. It's current now running in backup mode thanks to a $400 + call out fee of authrised service agent and it still has to orginal fault to be fixed. Thanks Rheem!

Problematic from the start

1 out of 5, reviewed on Aug 23, 2017

We were strongly persuaded by a plumber to buy this model because it was supposed to be efficient and was Govt subsidised. It was installed Aug 2009 and was much noisier than we expected. Another problem was the water that drips out the bottom made the nearby lawn a swamp. I fixed this by attaching a hose and collecting the water in a watering can - approx 7-9 litres a day. A technician came and fixed the potential shaking fault in 2011 mentioned in other reviews. In Jun 2012 it stopped working altogether but was fixed under warranty (the indicator light had also stopped working sometime earlier and was replaced by the Rheem technician at the same time). There have been many cold days when it doesn't turn on and there never seems to be enough hot water for more than 2 quick showers in winter which causes unnecessary stress for the family. It stopped working altogether last night and I am disappointed it hasn't lasted 8 years. The one that was here before was from the 80s.
I bought a Rheem because it was meant to be a trusted brand but I have been very disappointed with this one.

Fails to heat water but indicates operating?

1 out of 5, reviewed on Jul 25, 2017

We decided to purchase this Heat pump $3800 installed in July 2009 on good advice from a very reputable plumber, he recommended it as it came with renewable energy certificate benefits (rebate)=$891
Dec 2010 we received a recall letter and were told a tech would carry out a specified scope of work? and if I hear a Loud Hammering noise turn it off? but may take 7 weeks to fix?
..it's still noisy..
Aug 2011 tech replaced the Control Box, pump corroded and replaced ...
July 2013 Tech changed Valve...
We have been without hot water too many times to mention along the way, we have had enough of this problematic heat pump!!
It was new technology at the time but over the years seems to have caused more problems then its worth...
We are at our wits end as it cost$$$ so much to buy and now it's happening again ..!!
It went into heating unit only for few days (cold weather) then nothing (no led) a couple of times, turned off and on at switch to reset, now it's showing 3x green flashes (working) still no hot water!!
I was optimistic and hoped it was making hot water!!!!
Now it's Friday afternoon...sigh
I rang Rheem and they told me to get my local tech again as they don't handle Toowoomba?
Can't get anyone till Monday ..!!!
I tried another reset today now it shows 2x red (compressor failure)
This machine is doing nothing it won't even go into backup Heating...
72hrs and counting without hot water now...
Extremely regret ever getting this Heat pump, it has been a problem for which seems eternity now!!
and yes it always seems to be during winter!!!
Sick n Tired and will never recommend this type of system to anyone!!

Terrible

1 out of 5, reviewed on Jul 14, 2017

We bought this heat pump in April 2009 for a cost of $3090.00 plus had to add the installation cost on top of this, it had been repaired under warranty, but now 8 years later water is leaking badly out of the top of unit and it is very noisy. I am very upset about that after this time (8 years) we will now be up for a new not water system when we paid so much I would think they would last longer than this. I would never get another heat pump as they just do not last and cost too much.

Why are they still being sold ?

1 out of 5, reviewed on Jul 13, 2017

i don't know if I can write anything new that other reviewers have not already covered, but I will have a go.
We bought this unit in June 2009 and the first breakdown was in May 2012. Fortunately, it was still one week within warranty (rather than the usual one week out of warranty).
The unit continued to work reasonably well for the next four years, but performance in Winter was poor (more our fault by having Offpeak 1). The unit failed again 14 months ago and was again repaired (at our cost of $200 by Rheem).
We changed over to Offpeak 2 only 3 weeks ago and the HWS was performing well until three days ago. Once again it stopped and there was not even a diagnostic LED on the panel to tell what was wrong. I thought that a relay had failed in the power supply due to the recent change over to Offpeak 2. A visit from Endeavour Energy (in 3 hours) confirmed that there was power to the unit. Once again something had failed in the HWS.The HWS always seem to break down in Winter for some reason !!

I am now waiting for for the refrigeration technician to (hopefully) repair the unit so that I can have a hot shower after three days. I will then arrange for a quote for a new Offpeak resistive element HWS.

I did consider another heat pump HWS from Hydrotherm, but because they are located in Brisbane only, I was concerned about the quality of the service here in Sydney. The warranty periods are generous and the reviews here on Product Review are excellent. Of course, their long term reliability is yet to be tested.
The money we have managed to save in running costs over the years has been seriously eroded by the cost of out of warranty maintenance services.
The heat pump technology is good in principle, but the execution by some maunufacturers (esp. Rheem) leaves a lot to be desired. I wish Hydrotherm all the best with their units, but i will never buy another Rheem heat pump even if they offered a 20 year unconditional warranty.

Water too hot

5 out of 5, reviewed on Jul 12, 2017

Im an electrician, I couldn't adjust the temp on the old thermostat so I replaced it but the overload on the thermostat trips every day. The water is extremely hot. Looking at the circuit diagram I'm now thinking maybe the control board. Could this be the cause?
this is the first fault we have had with this system.

Ripped Off Rheem

1 out of 5, reviewed on Jul 05, 2017

I am fed up with the noise of this Rheem Air Sourced Heat Pump Model 55132507. It really is rubbish and not that efficient. If it didn't cost me so much money I would have got rid of it. Rheem did some repair work not requested by me and has been terrible since. First night after repairs it made a Big Bang. Long story Rheem couldn't get repairer back to fix because it's not his job. Got local contractor and he was rubbishing Rheem for there service treatment and wasn't really interested. Called service recently and no Rheem service guys with in 3 hours. Not good enough, Yes I am dissapointed Rheem.

Fails EVERY winter.

1 out of 5, reviewed on Jun 27, 2017

For the last few years our heat pump has failed every winter. We pay the few hundred dollars for a tech to come out, he replaces one component or another, and it works. Until the next winter.
Worst is, because of the way the fault system works, we don't know it's not working properly until I notice the fan isn't running, or until we get a MASSIVE electricity bill.

1 out of 5, reviewed on Jun 22, 2017

This water heater has done nothing but cost us money and let us down since we've had it. Within the first week of moving in the first unit failed and was replaced. We've had repairs done every couple of years since then. Looks like its on element again. Will be making yet another call to have it repaired. Not impressed.

Whilst love the energy efficiency of this unit I'm sick of it letting us down, have had bits fixed & replaced under warranty. Its now well over 5yr's old & out of warranty but wouldn't recomend anyone get one from new, not worth the hassle & not with young family & seems to let us down when the cold weather hits & on a weekend. Think its time to replace with something solid & reliable.

Unimpressed

2 out of 5, reviewed on Jun 10, 2017

The heat pump is quite noisy when in operation especially when positioned in the vicinity of a bedroom window, but the worst quality is in the production of hot water. We live in the Northern Rivers of NSW which is not a cold area, but as soon as the summer heat drops off, the heat pump production of hot water is pathetic. I have replaced the thermostat without any improvement so we take a shower without adding any cold water to the mix. We need to replace this unit but the options will be an expensive solution.

Rheem heat pump mpi 325=peace of junk.it was a problem from the beginning .pump was faulty and very noisy just after instillation , rheem technician came and fixed it for no charge , recently the the pump started playing up again sometimes it runs for about six hours non stop and other times it doesn't run at all and the unit switches to element (scary power bill).rheem sent a technician and his best advise was : wait till it dies and then buy a new one(very professional ,isn't he?)

Hi there, We just moved to this house and I can see continues drops of water coming out from the pipe connected to pressure valve and occasional water coming from other water pipe on Rheem Mpi321(55132507).Is this a normal behaviour?

Hi Gaurang,

Thank you for your question. If you could please contact Rheem service on 13 10 31, our customer service team will be able to troubleshoot and assist accordingly.

Kind regards,

It may be normal. But the valves need to be replaced around 10 years depending on quality of water in your area. The sacrificial anode needs replacing about every 5 years. If you bought the house, I recommend you get a local plumber to replace the anode and check condition of the valves. Anode is about $150 including labour. Each valve would be similar cost if a new one is needed.

I was informed by rheem serviceman that my MPI 325 heat pump would cost over $500 to repair and i said it wasn't worth spending that money on this crap heater only 7 years old, electricity bill has risen dramatically due to top element working only , i'm a plumber and i would not recommend it to anyone , i was told it's possible to bypass condenser? Any ideas?

Groovy57 asked on Sep 27, 2017

Answer this

I believe it's just a matter of bypassing the Schitpump from the electrical circuit and you could the cap the inlet and outlet to remove ac unit completely. I replaced the circulator pump on mine as it failed again. When they replaced it under warranty they only replaced the impeller.
Good luck and think twice before spending 4K on a Rheem unit that that'll never save you the money they promise.
