Don't purchase them, it has been trouble from day one and huge power bills, had the compressor replaced after a couple of months now it gone again after seven years looking at other reviews there seems to be a lot of unhappy people out there with these pieces off crap.

I installed my unit with my new holiday house which I use for 20 days per year.
So I’ve had the unit on for 100 days and now it’s dead.
Woman at rheem making small talk and telling me about how solar panels work in the moonlight.
I ditched my unit and installed a normal heater today for $1,000.
So much for efficiency.
There should be some comeback on rheem though.

Rheem quality and customer service

I purchased this unit on mgt.recommendation about 6 years ago. The unit failed within a month.it was put on bipass because rheem did not have the parts. 3 years later I called up rheem because of very high electricity bills. Rheem installed new parts and took it off bipass. 1 month later it failed .I called up rheem and they put it again on bipass. 3 years later after very high electricity charges I called up rheem last nov.2017 and they took it off bipass and got heat exchanger to work. In dec 2017. The unit stopped working properly. I switched the unit off and went on holidays. In march 2018. I called up rheem . They came up and checked the water heater and told me it is dead and can't be run as heat exchanger.
I contacted rheem via email and told them that at best I have had 2 months use out of this $4000+unit. It has cost me at least $6000+ in additional electricity charges. I took out off peak meter on rheem recommendation. Would they come and repair or replace or discount on new reliable unit. This unit was recalled and rheem sent me no notification.
It is over a month and no response from rheem. I would strongly recommend stay away from rheem. They are no longer an Australian company and dont care about customers. Rheem you have done this to many customers. The web is full of complaints about your product and customer service. If I can make a comment about the technicians they are very good and helpful . It is the product office staff and mgt. That is the problem

Energy efficient what a laugh

Installed Dec 2009. Had constant problems with heat pump not working Rheem came out and replaced some valve twice then the heat pump failed altogether Just outside warranty period quoted ridiculous price to exchange heat pump. Power bills were enormous didn’t realise the heater had a broken thermostat and continued to heat the water. Expensive tea kettle.
Have installed a 305 litre standard hot water service power bills have never been so low.
Looking at the reviews wondering if I can claim back the extremely high power bills from Rheem for producing such a product. Definitely has not been the energy saving device as it was advertised.
You would expect the unit to at least get past the 10 year mark for the price.

WARNING - DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY!

We are just one of many unhappy Rheem customers! Our Rheem Heat Pump Water Heater was installed in our home in 2012 (and was expensive). There are only two people here and hot water is primarily only used for showers. After five and a half years, without warning, it ceased heating, so we contacted Rheem for the contact details of an authorized agent to come out. He found there were MULTIPLE problems, including system circulation pump badly corroded, impellar catching on housing, system pulling into vacuum, and TX valve (and, of course, he charged us for the callout). Concerned about the condition of the HWS after such a comparatively short time, we rang Rheem who sent THEIR employee out to check. According to him, we needed a new heater, not just a repair, and he quoted for this. After ringing Rheem again (we had to because they didn't get back to us as promised) they simply offered a discount on the purchase of a new model. If we can expect to have to replace it again in another five years, WHY would they think we would be prepared to spend thousands on another one??? We will never purchase another Rheem product!

Just an expensive joke. Will never buy another Rheem

Purchased in 2011 as at the time were told we could only have solar or a heat pump to replace a 20 year old electric unit. Roof wasn't suitable for solar so went with the Rheem heat pump.

Seven years later has failed and uneconomic to repair (apparently the heat pump part is completely corroded and not repairable. The tank is fine)

The issue is that we went down this path as it was supposedly environmentally friendly not to mention the cost of around $3,500.00.. So my question to Rheem is how is a water heater that lasts only 7 years in any way friendly to the environment given the energy used in making the the thing as well as transporting it.

I have been told that the standard warranty is 5 years on tank and 2 years on heat pump so obviously Rheem don't expect these water heaters to last very long.

Would suggest you stay away from Rheem. I certainly will never buy another one of their products.

Biggest waste of money in my life!

It worked OK until it was one month out of warranty. We ran out of hot water one evening and I had to get an electrical/refrigeration company to come and check it out. They said something about a blocked "TX valve" and that the unit was "pumping down". They gave me the option to change the valve which sounded very involved and also very expensive with no guarantees. They also gave me the option to rewire the unit so it uses the backup element full time. I opted for this seeing as the refrigeration unit seemed so costly and unreliable. It also showed up on product review that I had been stung. These units are a total lemon and total waste of money. There's no way it would have worked long enough to pay itself off. Now I'm stuck with a hot water unit that only heats a third of its capacity at full peak power. So it cost me $3000 and then $300 in a service call and now it costs me even more in electricity! Lose lose situation. STAY AWAY FROM THESE UNITS AND DO NOT GET STUCK WITHOUT HOT WATER!!! Highly disappointed and have had a semi working system for quite a few years now as we have not had thousands lying around for another hot water system and we don't have off peak either :(

Not worth the money spent I think

Bought the 551310 in late 2009. Has worked on and off for a few years now with frustration. It's now dead. I've conducted all troubleshooting methods without success including cleaning out the impeller with was a little dirty. Had a Rheem Tech come out and advise me in 2 mins that the unit needs replacing and that I should have changed the anti-rust mode on the unit every 3-4 years. Go figure. No-one ever advised me if this .He's quoted a ridiculous amount to replace approx 5k.With the amount it costs to buy and install one of these things I reckon the unit should last a minimum of 20 years. Any suggestions ? or should I just look at an Aquamax Stainless Unit or Rennai Infinity?

Always problems

Fan thing was always problem. Eventually had it replaced at my expense! Now after 7 years the tank has rusted out at the top and leaks. Actually rusted through. The cover hasn’t rusted the tank has rusted!! Really??? This doesn’t happen over night! So I’ve called Rheem and got the usual out off warranty bla bla, customer service will ring you back. Don’t buy anything from Rheem it will rust

Never ending problems!

I have been extremely dissatisfied with this HWS 325 litre. For a family of 3. Only 6.5 yrs old and paid $4,200 in March 2011 including labour and installation along with the ongoing issues which all seem to fall out of warranty. In one year (early 2016) spent almost $1,000on TX valve and circulation pump faulty. In same year the fan motor burnt out and needed replacing another $500!. Now in October 2017 the compressor had failed and have been quoted $1200 for part and labour. Very very disappointed with all of these major faults etc. This system had costed several thousand $$$$$ and will now just replace it, not throwing any more Money at it. Once again only 6.5 yrs old and the problems started at 4.5 yrs. It is also a very noisy system . I would welcome any feedback from Rheem directly as to why this system seems to be such a "lemon" also forgot to mention 6 weeks after installation received a recall letter re an occurring fault in an electrical component which the compressor could rupture. The system was checked and supposedly "ticked off" as being ok. you could say this system with all repairs labour etc has costed about $1000 per year and now I still useless after 6.5 yrs.

I purchased a Rheem Heat Pump 55132507 in 2009. I was told it was a good product from another customer. There's is still working, mine isn't. I called Rheem Oct 2017, out of warranty! They gave me a number for a Rheem contractor to look at it. No, he doesn't look at these!!! So, how do I get my heater fixed. (Can't afford it, showering out of buckets for nearly 1 month now). My parents had a Rheem, lasted for years and years. I'm a 2nd generation Rheem customer. Very sad.

Noisy fan from day one.

We have built a brand new home and decided to install a Rheem and from day one the fan is very noisy. It appears as he fan rotates it slightly vibrates against the outer casing making an annoying noise , I have had it looked at it twice by the builder , I still cannot get a peaceful night sleep without shutting the windows. Other than the noise complaint it has been ok.

No hot water - appalling 'service' from Rheem

We have a heat pump 544325 - no hot water. Tech arrives and converts to the element advising he can't do any more and to call Rheem Service again. No worry ... the $143 call out fee will be refunded against future repair costs. We call Rheem Service and after 30 mins on the phone the 'service agent' offers to provide me the number for a contractor to come and have a look! And no, there's no offset of the initial costs and there will be another call out fee as the contractor doesn't work for Rheem with the parts to be somewhere north of $770, but they don't know ... But would I like to replace the unit - that will be around $2000! Whether Rheem choses to employ staff or use contractors is up to it, however customer service isn't handing out the phone number for a repair man. I can not believe the poor service offered by Rheem and, had I read these reviews (>300 of 330 rating as Bad or Terrible), I would not have bought a Rheem product.

Will never buy from Rheem again. Continual problems that were never fixed in the short warranty period. Nearly 4k for a unit that is 7 years old.
Now they want $140 just to look at it! And then I'll be up for parts and labor.

Expected this unit to last longer

I've always thought heat pumps are a good idea for larger houses equipped with solar power. I bought this unit based on Rheem's reputation for quality gas storage systems. This system worked well for about 7 years, requiring only a new anode around 5 years in as recommended. The fan was less noisy than my Fujitsu reverse cycle air con.
But my Rheem has failed at just past the 7-year mark. My electrician traced the fault to one of the heat pump components. I was going to pay the $150 to get a Rheem technician to take a look until I read all the bad reviews on this site in similar circumstances. Given the high likelihood of expensive repairs (I'm guessing between $500-$1k total costs), with no confidence they will extend overall unit remaining life, I've chosen a Quantum 200L compact heat pump replacement unit for $1,883 fully installed, old unit removed. Quantum heat pumps are more efficient based on the tech sheets and seem to have a much better reputation with the plumbers I spoke to and reviews on this site. That said, my first preference would be a Hydrotherm heat pump, but they do not currently supply the WA market.

Failed again...

Similar story to many others here. We have this unit at our rental property and it has failed twice. The first time it was fixed under warranty but took over a week for a service agent to attend costing us that time in rent. It's now failed again after 2 years with same issue a compressor fault. This fault stops it from even switching to backup heating mode which equal tenants with no hot water. To date this unit has cost me over $1500 in lost rent and service call out fees. It's current now running in backup mode thanks to a $400 + call out fee of authrised service agent and it still has to orginal fault to be fixed. Thanks Rheem!

Problematic from the start

We were strongly persuaded by a plumber to buy this model because it was supposed to be efficient and was Govt subsidised. It was installed Aug 2009 and was much noisier than we expected. Another problem was the water that drips out the bottom made the nearby lawn a swamp. I fixed this by attaching a hose and collecting the water in a watering can - approx 7-9 litres a day. A technician came and fixed the potential shaking fault in 2011 mentioned in other reviews. In Jun 2012 it stopped working altogether but was fixed under warranty (the indicator light had also stopped working sometime earlier and was replaced by the Rheem technician at the same time). There have been many cold days when it doesn't turn on and there never seems to be enough hot water for more than 2 quick showers in winter which causes unnecessary stress for the family. It stopped working altogether last night and I am disappointed it hasn't lasted 8 years. The one that was here before was from the 80s.
I bought a Rheem because it was meant to be a trusted brand but I have been very disappointed with this one.

Fails to heat water but indicates operating?

We decided to purchase this Heat pump $3800 installed in July 2009 on good advice from a very reputable plumber, he recommended it as it came with renewable energy certificate benefits (rebate)=$891
Dec 2010 we received a recall letter and were told a tech would carry out a specified scope of work? and if I hear a Loud Hammering noise turn it off? but may take 7 weeks to fix?
..it's still noisy..
Aug 2011 tech replaced the Control Box, pump corroded and replaced ...
July 2013 Tech changed Valve...
We have been without hot water too many times to mention along the way, we have had enough of this problematic heat pump!!
It was new technology at the time but over the years seems to have caused more problems then its worth...
We are at our wits end as it cost$$$ so much to buy and now it's happening again ..!!
It went into heating unit only for few days (cold weather) then nothing (no led) a couple of times, turned off and on at switch to reset, now it's showing 3x green flashes (working) still no hot water!!
I was optimistic and hoped it was making hot water!!!!
Now it's Friday afternoon...sigh
I rang Rheem and they told me to get my local tech again as they don't handle Toowoomba?
Can't get anyone till Monday ..!!!
I tried another reset today now it shows 2x red (compressor failure)
This machine is doing nothing it won't even go into backup Heating...
72hrs and counting without hot water now...
Extremely regret ever getting this Heat pump, it has been a problem for which seems eternity now!!
and yes it always seems to be during winter!!!
Sick n Tired and will never recommend this type of system to anyone!!

We bought this heat pump in April 2009 for a cost of $3090.00 plus had to add the installation cost on top of this, it had been repaired under warranty, but now 8 years later water is leaking badly out of the top of unit and it is very noisy. I am very upset about that after this time (8 years) we will now be up for a new not water system when we paid so much I would think they would last longer than this. I would never get another heat pump as they just do not last and cost too much.

I have a red code it flashes twice and then an interval. Any ideas?

What rheem technician told me is that 2 red flashes means that the heat exchanger is dead and the replacement cost will be around $800. This means that the unit can only be run on bipass and not as heat exchanger unit. That means that power consumption will be 2 to 3 times higher. You need to check with rheem also the manual has information on flash lighting codes.
If your heat exchanger fan is going it may only be moisture problem .

Technicians came today. Thinks it's TX valve. Said nothing about moisture. He bypassed it. No running on secondary coil.

I have a heat pump MPI 551series . today i heard some bang noises and then it started to make some very loud continuous noises as the fan went around ,all of a sudden the fan stopped but the motor kept going . the green light is flashing as normal but now no fan going around but motor still going. Please advise?
