really expensive ones , and decided there wasn't much on the market that was impressive or lasted like old school mowers. Eventually, i decided on on the masport , mostly because it had a guarantee to start in 5 pulls. So its been 6 years, and im so happy with it. It still it starts, mostly within 2 pulls. I only use BP 95 unleaded. Change the oil once a year, and have never had any trouble with this mower. My son in law brought one, and he has had it 2 years, and has had the same experience. I'm really impressed, given the modern world of inbuilt obsolescence.

followed the instructions in the online manual and it works beautifully. Does a fantastic job of cutting my couch and kikuyu lawns when dry (you shouldn’t cut wet lawns anyway). Something wholesome about using a push reel mower compared with my petrol mower. * tip. You can take the roller off and fill it with sand to make it heavier. This gives a better cut and stops the mower bouncing.

choke operation. So it had jammed (as suspected) in the fully open position which meant I was getting no choke at all when starting cold. Butterfly was wide open. I went on line to Amazon, E-Bay, etc & the wax choke cartridges were readily available, & I ordrerd a pack which had two of the choke cartridge, a fuel filter, carburettor gaskets etc, so a mini fuel service kit I guess you'd call it. I fitted all bits & changed the oil at the same time, air filter was still good, so service complete. Just to mention, the kit was 'not genuine Honda parts'. It started 'better' but if it sat more than a couple of weeks between use it would crank over longer than I think is acceptable. I changed the choke cateridge again (fitted the second one supplied) & same result. I did notice that although the pin on the cateridge was retracting when cold to close the butterly flap, it didnt retract fully. I went back on line looking for a the genuine Honda choke part & found several but they were all quite expensive, but there was a marine company in WA (Honda agents) that looked like they were having a clean out & had one only for a reasonable price. That arrived & I installed it & since then there have been no problems with cold (or warm) starts. NOTE...it was common knowledge that these parts, whether it was a batch or whatever, were known to fail & Honda even ended up changing the part number for the updated part. Pic of the latest part number.

on longevity yet but the extra Makita warranty registration gives peace of mind.
Firstly I noted previous reviews couldn’t cut lawn low enough but I’m finding I only use on 4 or 5 setting so maybe Makita’s addressed this earlier issue? For me or any one similar with chronic illness especially related to respiratory system, I believe buying Battey garden equipment is essential.
But even without my condition it’s a winner in so many other areas- quieter, slightly less heavy, easier to push with the large rubber wheels, no smell or fumes when using or storing under house, more pleasant experience so likely to mow more regularly *, Can easily stop and restart when chatting to neighbours or politely turn off when pedestrians or kids nearby, obviously major improvement regarding no fuel, engine air filters Or service worries, this mower is a great mulcher*,
* I haven’t tested yet with super thick grass but it performed well on some high patches, just needed to use the boost function. I’m expecting to mow more regularly during spring season to avoid this. * haven’t used catcher yet but it seems more flimsy than old petrol plastic catcher, the mulch plug also is flimsy in comparison, just need to be mindful when removing and cleaning.
Batteries lasted longer than I expected probably due to low power mode which is very quiet. Did 70% of my block including 400m2 of nature strip, before using a second pair which still had 4 bars when job complete. I bought the Makita as already had purchased other outdoor tools. Definitely buy during promo, I paid $750 and included 4 batteries 5ah, blower skin, plus during oz day promotion at Sydney tools received $100 voucher.

March 26 , 3 months is dismal to say the least , had the same issues as the reviewer below. How and why grass collects under a cover that houses the belts and pulleys is beyond me and poor design quality, especially when there is no mention of it in the owners manual. I cant mow any lower the the 3rd last setting as, as previously stated the mower gets "hung up" and the wheels just spin and try lifting or pushing this heavy mower through to get traction again is a nightmare. I bought this mower to make my life easier all it has done is make it harder. It was waste of money and if i don't get a refund I will be getting rid of it .....................but in all honesty I don't feel right about passing a lemon on to someone else so i guess i will just have to cut my losses :( * Petrol tank is small * Gets "hung up" even on reasonable level ground and unable to cut grass to desired length * Grass collect under covers were it shouldn't- causing major mechanical issues * heavy and hard to maneuver * starts easy * cuts nice when it does cut *catcher is a good size * not so great at mulching but not bad

brought it to service after, this mower hardly pulls alot of fuel, even for 2 lawns to mow, the fuel is hardly touched, I love the big catcher on it, you dont have to empty it that often, maybe twice maximum per lawn, it is so easy to start, especially that its a readystart so no priming required, it starts first pull on full throttle. I once had to mow in the rain and it was just perfect. Another quality is the build quality, its strong, and nothing is plastic, apart from the catcher and engine cover, I do use and abuse this mower when I cut the grass, and it just does excellent, buy one if you find it, you will get great quality out of it.

pull. Was told it would start easy first to second pull every time. It didn't. Took 5 to 10 pulls and even then it took a minute or so to run ok. So I checked the spark plug. The gap was wrong. It had been fitted with the gap at .30, is supposed to be .20 I set it to .20 and bingo, first pull it fired up. If you get one and like mine its not easy to start, check the spark plug gap and set it to .20 It now starts easy and runs great. The easy clean feature where you connect a hose to the chassis then run it is lame. It does not clean it properly at all. It only cleans about half of it. I dont bother using it now. I just tip it up and use a stick to scrape the collected grass underneath away. Using the hose thing is just messy and a bad idea. Whomever thought it was never thought it out properly. Sounds good but doesn't work. Otherwise, its really good fuel wise using heaps less than my old Lawnkeeper. Much more power too in long grass. Just check the Plug gap if it has starting issues.

having already purchased other Ozito tools and batteries. It is certainly less expensive than most other cordless alternatives. Light weight makes it easy to transport and store. We have a medium size Sir Walter buffalo lawn which we keep at least 1 to 2 inches in length so often find I'm pushing hard to progress through thicker grass which may be 3 plus inches long. The mower is surprisingly torquey, and up for it and the 4Ah battery lasts the distance. Worth having a spare just in case, or rotating areas over different days. The blades are super sharp straight out of the box which means the cutting action is great but easily damaged if you hit a stone which can stop the reel rotating and require a file and re-adjustment. This machine is also allergic to hardwood chip mulch as it will instantly lock up on a chip and require releasing. Difficulty inserting the battery can be a minor annoyance as it requires perfect alignment to slide in it's holder and you often find yourself having to get down low to do that. Due to its light weight it can float over the grass at times so needs downwards pressure to keep it's 'bite'. Height adjustment is a waste of time. It needs to be set at it's lowest to maintain a reasonable length and the handle position is too low for a taller operator. I modified mine so the handle is locked at a higher position and downwards pressure can be maintained. This made the difference between being useful v. useless. Like all reel mowers it will leave some patches and miss grass unless your ground is perfectly flat. Be prepared to criss-cross some areas if not. The catcher is a waste of time as it quickly fills and it is a pain to bend over to release and re-attach. Easier to rake afterwards.

Is a push lawn mower right for me?
Push lawn mowers, or walking mowers, are well-suited to those who have a flat, small to medium-sized patch of grass that they need to mow. They’re also preferred by those who want more user control and precision in their mowing, as these mowers can get into the nooks and crannies of your yard.
If you’re physically able to push a mower and start it up (you can sometimes work up a sweat starting a petrol mower), then these power tools might be right for you.
When is a push mower unsuitable?
While tight corners and tricky edges aren't a problem for a push mower, if you have uneven or hilly ground, a push mower might be too inconvenient to push, since you're providing the momentum. For a larger area, you may want to look at a ride-on mower.
Types of push mowers
Most push lawn mowers for sale today are either powered by petrol or electric motors, and there are a few compelling reasons for going with either option. What’s right for you will depend on the size of your lawn, what kind of terrain your mower needs to get through, and your own personal preferences.
Petrol push mowers • See all
Petrol push mowers have powerful engines (think at least 7nm of torque and an engine size of around 150 to 200cc), making them preferred by contractors and those with large lawns.
Should I get a 2-stroke or a 4-stroke mower?
Petrol mowers either have 2-stroke or 4-stroke engines.
2-stroke engines are smaller, more compact, lighter to push, and more powerful than their 4-stroke counterparts. The downside is that they’re quite harmful for the planet and human health, which is why they’ve been phased out of Australian stores.
This law doesn’t affect second-hand mowers, so if your heart is set on a 2-stroke model, then you can still find some circulating around.
4-stroke engines only require unleaded petrol to run, are simpler to start, and are better suited for tackling bigger yards.
Battery push mowers • See all
Battery lawn mowers usually give you up to 60 to 90 minutes of mowing time on a single charge, making them suited to small and some medium-sized lawns.
Electric push mowers • See all
Electric push lawn mowers are mains-powered, and are generally suited for smaller yards in which they can be easily attached to a power source.
Manual push mowers • See all
For those with small yards, mowing the lawn the old-fashioned way with a manual mower (also called a hand mower or a reel lawn mower) could be a good option.
While they’re the most environmentally friendly push mower option, they’re not as efficient as other mowers and generally aren’t very effective on taller grass. This means that if you use a hand lawn mower, you should be mowing fairly regularly.
They usually cost anywhere from $70 to $200, and because they don’t have many moving parts, are easy to maintain - you only really need to clean and sharpen the blades, no oil changes needed!

What to look for in a push mower
Ease of use
Weight
Your mower should be easy to push, which is why you should check its weight. Lawn mowers with big wheels handle rough ground easier, but smaller wheels on more lightweight models can be easier to manoeuvre and turn.
Comfort
Mowers with handles that are turned up place less strain on your wrists and can also give you greater control over the machine so you can easily manoeuvre it around the yard. A mower gets bonus points if the height of the handle is adjustable to suit people of all sizes.
Controls
The controls should be easy to use and access. Look out particularly for the engine control lever - it’s easier to operate if it’s on the handlebar.
Ignition
Some lawn mowers start with the push of a button or the turn of a key while others require pulling a cord. If you have strength and dexterity limitations, you may want to opt for an electric, battery, or manual model that doesn’t require much effort to get going.
Catcher size
The larger the catcher, the less often you’ll have to empty out the cut grass. A bigger capacity is particularly useful for those who have a larger lawn.
Features
There are some features that can make using and maintaining your lawn mower a breeze.
- Mulching option: A mulching attachment or plug lets the mower mulch your grass clippings and push them back into the lawn, helping fertilise your yard for it to be as healthy as it can be.
- Quick-start motor: A quick-start motor starts at the push of a button.
- Foldable handle: This is a common feature on newer mowers, and is useful to make a lawn mower more compact and easy to store.
- Self-propelled: A self-propelled mower propels forward on its own - all you need to do is control the direction it goes in.
- Blade brake: This feature lets you stop the blades while the engine still runs, getting rid of the need to keep restarting the mower when you want to empty the bag, move debris or obstacles out of the mower’s path, or move the mower over sidewalks or gravel.
- Side discharge: Side discharge is useful for high, thick, or wet grass as it doesn’t cause it to build up on the underside of the mowing deck, making it a great feature for those who don’t regularly clean their mower.
- Battery life indicator: For battery models, an indicator can help you figure out how much work you can get done before you need to recharge.
- Safety key: This stops the mower from starting when it’s removed (so you only keep it inserted when you use it) - this can help give you peace of mind if you have children around.
Cutting diameter
Another thing to consider is cutting diameter, which is related to the size of the blade slicing the grass. Petrol lawn mowers tend to come with wider cutting diameters of 45 to 50cm, compared to 30 to 40cm which you typically see on electric lawn mowers.
While this might not seem like a lot, on larger lawns 10 to 20 cms can save you an extra couple of laps around the backyard. However, a wider cutting deck can also make it more difficult to manoeuvre the mower into the tight spaces of your yard, not to mention the extra storage space they often require.
Cutting height
A mower should have at least a few different cutting height options. Think about how low you want to cut your grass - petrol models can generally make the shortest cuts. These different options should also be easily adjustable.
How much does a push lawn mower cost?
Petrol mowers will usually set you back somewhere between $200 and $1600. Electric push mowers (those that require mains power) can range anywhere from $100 to $250, while battery models often cost somewhere between $150 to $1900.
If you’re looking for a commercial mower for more heavy-duty jobs, then you should expect to pay more than this.
You should also look for a substantial warranty - the longer and more comprehensive it is, the more faith the manufacturer has in the quality of their product. You should also acquaint yourself with the fine print of the coverage so you’re not hit with a nasty surprise if things go wrong.
Wrapping up
Buying a push mower can be a big decision - between choosing the type of mower you want and the features you want it to have, it’s easy to be overwhelmed with the choice available.
Taking your own yard’s needs and how you like to mow into account will help you find a lawn mower that’s fit-for-purpose and helps you tidy up your green.
