worked well but shame about the dispenser tubing – It served us well for 11 years without a fault but now ,as the others suggested water dispenser tubing froze (not sure how that is possible) and we cannot replace it-the technician suggested replacing the entire door? the cost is approx a $1000 or defrst it and see how we go without any guarantees. It is old but a small change to the design could… Read more
have saved people thousands and maintain a good reputation. Also shocking cost of replacing broken shelves. UPDATE:it magically fixed itself and the water dispenser continues to work-i think the trick is no to have any items in the bottom freezer drawer so it won't freeze the tubes, how ridiculous.....
Joining the crowd – yes, another one to fall foul of water dispenser pipe split - I read the comments below and horrified yet not really that surprised to find the Bosch solution is to *replace the entire freezer door* for $'00s rather than the piece of plastic tubing with 2mm split which has failed due to poor Bosch design. Combined with all the shelf failures can only conclude that Bosch is over priced, poorly designed, rubbish Show details
Looks don't match performance – I am a big bosch fan however....This is a rebadged daewoo not a german made product. I think it's time we voted with our $ when it comes to these brands outsourcing their name on products. I have replaced every plastic shelf with tempered glass $25 each from my local glazier and had to reorder 2 new crisper draw set runners ($80) as the plastic is… Read more
brittle and just breaks easily. (The shelves were not overloaded) The spare parts were dispatched and arrived next day, so that service was effective. Having said that i recently looked at every fridge freezer combo in a retailer and they all look much the same now. Cheap and plastic, I wish I had my old Amana back that i sold with a property because they just "aint made like they used to". I have had blockages and regular cleaning maintenance service calls as well as the ice maker electrics coming loose; but no biggy there as far as reliability.
Another European failed product - not for Australian standards I say – Only a little plastic tube broke. The cost - about $10. Couldn't be replaced had to buy a new fridge door then had to pay to have it fitted. Bosch staff were very accommodating but I wouldn't buy another Bosch product. The fridge interior space looks big but storage space is very minimal. I have had to run a second fridge since I purchased this one just to keep my food and drinks cold and there are only the two of us. Very disappointing. Show details
Elegant design but waste of money – Bosch have a good name and this fridge freezer matched our modern kitchen with it's elegant or squarish design. Reasonably quiet and no issues with usability including packing the shop each week. Oh, and the ice maker and ice dispenser is good considering it can also crush the ice. However, after just over 5 years of use I consider this a waste of… Read more
money as it was expensive back in 2011. In the first 2 years under warranty cooling failed but Bosch did respond well and did quick repair - fan motor that circulates coolness broke. In the next 2 years, outside warranty, fan broke again and then the thermo-thing broke which has the same effect. That is, back of fridge gets iced up, fan cannot circulate coolness so fridge doesn't work properly. In this last year of operation the ice maker has failed and I notice that the freezer is now not cold enough. So, near $900 additional maintenance costs and I now could never recommend Bosch.
BOSCH KAN5870AU is really a Samsung fridge re badged!!! – I should have sent it back to Harvey Norman when it arrived and saw made in KOREA on the box. This was actually the first question that I asked the sales rep in the store, she told it was made in France. I did not want a Korean fridge let alone a Samsung as I had just 12 MONTHS fighting them over an air conditioner. Lots of issues over the years. Mr Bosch you have lost a customer!!! So has Harvey Norman!!! Show details
Overpriced junk? – I can't complain about the life span of this fridge because after 11 years it is still running strong however it hasn't been a trouble-free experience. From the day it was delivered I spotted a kink in the water hose at the bottom of the freezer door hinge. I instantly called Bosch out and they "fixed it". It wasn't fixed properly though. … Read more
Well, that hose has now burst in the exact same spot where the kink was. The only option is to change the entire freezer door. That's right, the pipe can not be replaced. A new door is just shy of $1000 to replace. I should have demanded a new fridge back then. I will never fall for that again and neither should you. If there is a faulty part like that, demand a complete changeover or go to consumer affairs.
Just last year, the rear fan motor died. There was no warning message on the fridge to alert me of a problem. The door and surrounds became incredibly warm. This was the only way to notice. I waited 4 weeks for that part to come in and it cost about $130. Luckily I am handy with the tools as I was able to change it myself.
I feel this fridge is poorly designed and assembled. It might be Bosch branded but it is just a cheap Daewoo under the hood. On the other hand, the ice-maker and crusher hasn't skipped a beat. That has worked very well its entire life.
When I contacted Bosch to report the broken pipe, I mentioned that this had been fixed by Bosch in the past. Conveniently they had no record of it.
Would I buy a Bosch product again, more than likely not. Clearly Bosch is a brand that doesn't hesitate to use inferior components and you certainly don't get what you think you are paying for. It might look great on the exterior but it is a mess of cheap parts on the inside. Think of a BMW with a Daewoo engine. I don't think anyone would be happy with that.
My advice to the reader, research your products properly before you invest a bunch of your cash into them.
Thanks
A money pit! – I am now out of pocket around $500 after fan needed replacing as we had no ice, plus an additional call out for water leaking out the bottom of the door joint onto floorboards. That call out was a waste of money and time as I was told that the crack in the water line was up in the door hinge and my only option for repair was to pay $1000 to replace the whole door!!!!!!!! Worst Fridge I have ever used – It is quiet. Was OK for about 6 months. Developed a problem with the ICE maker and dispenser just after the warranty was over. Cost of fixing was around $600. poor parts being used by the manufacturer. The cheap plastic shelves and door shelves break off very easily. I just checked and some of the replacement door shelves (small plastic pieces) cost over $200 each.

Need help to make the fridge useful!! – I have not experienced many of the disappointments I see others have but I notice someone else noted the poor shelving arrangement. Exactly same fault on mine has occurred on mine! – Water hose has split right on the freezer door hinge. I would expect an easier fix than simply replacing the door. That is not good enough and Fair Trading/Consumer Affairs should be contacted. What will you do about it Bosch? I should not have to pay for a new door because of a design fault with no easy fix because warranty has expired.

Bosch KAN58A40AU - Not Happy Jan – We were initially quite happy with this product. However, freezer fan went 13 months ago and now compressor has gone too. We had an extended warranty but compressor went 11 months after warranties finished. We now need to replace and I really can't see it being a Bosch unit. Thank you!

KAN58A40AU Troubles – We bought this fridge because we thought it would be a quality product. After 12 months, the ice maker stopped working and the freezer iced up. I contacted Bosch after sales service and was referred to a repair company who didn't show up three times. I've now worked out that the most likely problem is the freezer fan not working and I plan to fix that myself. I doubt I'd buy Bosch again...

Ice Maker Failed just out of warranty – The fan in the top compartment of the fridge had failed causing the freezer temp to increase and the ice maker not work. I rang Bosch, I got palmed off to the local Bosch technician who came out and fixed it. He knew exactly what the problem would be and had a replacement fan in his kit. (it must happen often). It was expensive to repair and I would have expected much better life out of the freezer fan or replaced under warranty.

Another Bosch Fridge Water Dispenser Issue!! – I bought this fridge along with a kitchen full of other Bosch appliances in 2007. To put it in context I'm an empty nester and the freezer door doesn't get used as much as say a family of 3 or more. About a year ago I noticed a small water leak which gradually got worse until I pulled the bottom cover off and noticed the water pipe broken. Now I'm… Read more
no design engineer but it seems to me that given enough movement cycles this pipe that goes through bottom hinge is destined to fail eventually. That the only remedy that Bosch offers is to replace the whole freezer door would be acceptable except for the fact that the same design applies, Bosch themselves say it is no different. Bosch told me this was an "isolated problem" but a cursorily look on the internet shows it is more than this and probably warrants a recall. It's a common enough complaint for Bosch to do better than just offer a half price discount ($450). They are in fact giving away nothing as I'd wager the landed cost of said door would be less than that so I declined their offer. Come on Bosch, do something about this!!

Number of design flaws – Great fridge / freezer. Ice dispenser and water dispenser are great, although they do take up a fair amount of room. There seems to be a large amount of insulation used (compared to other designs) which reduces the amount of usable space in the fridge. Plenty of door space. The fridge compartment could do with one extra shelf and more shelf slots;… Read more
it's not that flexible currently. The draws don't open as fully again compared to other manufacturers models, making access to contents difficult. Filling up after a shop is painful!
The biggest issue has been reliability.
1. the water reservoir has failed on at least two occasions. The failure seems to be a design issue as it has occurred in the same place on the reservoir, at the joint between the reservoir and fixing plate, on the inside of the 'U' shaped part of the reservoir.
2. the draining plug at the rear of the freezer section for self defrost, plugs up, causing icing up problems. Cleaning this and the drainage pipe is a solid afternoon of fun.
3. the buttons on the front of the fridge fail intermittently
4. the ice making compartment gets full of ice and needs emptying / manual intervention else the entire device is stuck.
5. the shelves in the door are so big, they interfere with the shelves inside the fridge. You can't fill up your shelves without preventing the door from closing.

Water Dispenser not working again – Purchased this fridge about 6 years ago and have had issues the entire duration. The water dispenser has slowly lost pressure this time to the point where it takes 5 minutes to fill a 500ml drink bottle. 24/7 Customer Service - I don't think so!!!, – We saved for ages and purchased a Bosch Induction Cooktop.... Purchased 3rd October 2014. The thing was install by our electrician 10th October 2014. To date 18th Jan 13h52 - Still no return call. Not even a reply sms. What type of a shonky operation ignores a customer who has paid $2000 for an appliance that now needs repair under warranty. Third world service! My earnest recommendation - Do not purchase Bosch products, based on this experience the Product is substandard, and the Company Bosch do not have any reputable back up service. Useless! Rather get a Haier or LG; Samsung, this is the last time I will EVER buy German appliances, over priced and clearly sub standard. This is not applicable anymore as I regret having purchased Bosch branded Product. Shocking and shonky warranty service.

Not reliable as I expected in terms of the brand – I have used it since new, it has served me about 4 years. The evaporator fan in the refrigerator has failed. I also noticed that the interior quality is rather poor. It is designed to occupy too much room for the ice maker which is not efficient. I am very disappointed with it. I would be very careful to choose Bosch products in the future. Good looking Evaporator fan slow or stop
I will never buy Bosch again for anything!!
Side-by-Side Fridge-Freezer – We are a family that love side-by-side refrigerators! The platinum finish that was 'fingerprint proof' was a HUGE selling point for us with small children in… Read more
the house. It maintains its temperatures beautifully and the quick chill function of the freezer is handy to preserve the nutrients in meals as they are frozen. Although a beautiful item the fact that the child lock did not stop children from flooding the floor was a big disappointment. The cheap plastic shelving is already cracked in two places after less than 18 months domestic use.A few small changes to the product would make this a magnificent item to own but for now I would give it a miss. Beautiful fingerprint-proof finish, extremely stylish & modern design. Door open alarm, which is a must with little kids in the house! The downside is the plastic shelves which easily crack and are not as strong and as sturdy as our last side-by-side refrigerator that was a different brand. The child lock was a huge selling point for us yet we found out once the fridge was installed that the child lock will only lock the display panel not the actual water dispenser so little hands still manage to drench the floor when they touch the fridge. The other negative was the ice box takes up most of the freezer so you have very little room left.
Bad – Ok I have been using this fridge for about 3 years and 2 months. The compressor/motor completely died at just under 3 years use, I had the Bosch recommended repairers out to be told it was going to be a total of just over $1200 to fix!! The good news was that the parts were covered under the 5 year compressor warranty (that pretty much all fridges… Read more
have) however the labour bill was still going to be $500 which after some consideration I decided wasn't ok with me given this fridge was a $2400+ fridge that wasn't even 3 years old!! So after quite a bit of emailing to and fro (about 4 weeks worth) I finally got the Bosch Australia Service Department to agree to pay the total repair bill. The serviceman came out and fixed the fridge the following week (he also told me that it is a Daewoo shell/casing and the dead motor is actually a Samsung motor) and the rest is history. Although it took a while I am still really happy with the Bosch customer service, I don't think alot of companies would agree to cover repair costs 12 months out of warranty. Brand - Looks - Ice & Water Dispenser - Glass Shelves - Door Open Alarm - Dimensions (counterdepth for flush fit) - Customer Service Quality / Reliability - Basic Build
Bad – Sorry I did not keep my Westinghouse 14 year old fridge which is still going strong down in Melbourne. May have to rethink what brands to buy next time. disappointing after researching this product for some time. Thinking I was getting a good quality product. It seems I was very wrong. I liked the finish and the convenience of having water and ice. I also loved the fridge shelves and drawers I disliked the fact it broke down 18 months after I bought it. The fiasco of getting it fixed was beyond a joke. They would not come out and look at it. It is under warranty and they are going to take it away to be reviewed which could take a month or more. I am very disappointed with this treatment. I am sure we have just been unlucky with the product. I do believe they will try and get out of doing the repairs under warranty if they can. It is still working, but the fridge is on +16 degrees even though it is saying +4. The freezer is still working, but the icemaker was jamming up. I have 2 other bosch products and am now nervous about them.
Not the quality I expected from a BOSCH product – Evaporator Fan in Freezer failed after 3 years. I expect better from a $2500 fridge. Spare parts price for this $110 ex GST... A stupid price. I got told that BOSCH doesn't sell fridges in Australia anymore. I'm not surprised. After reading reviews like this and others in this forum I would definately not buy any BOSCH products again. Looks Bad bad quality.
I agree the customer service is appalling.
