Ease of Use
Cleaning & Maintenance
Noise Level

Failed to clean properly after 2.5 years - expected more – I purchased this machine 4.5 years ago and installed it in our home. Initially it worked fine and for an average priced machine, I was happy. But for the past two years it has not cleaned the dishes well, and now it's so bad that the dishes require a handwash/rinse again after the cycle has finished (as well as rinsing before they go into the… Read more

machine). I expected the machine to be operating successfully for more than 4.5 years. The machine has rinse aid in it, we use Finish tablets, Finish cleaner is put through once a month and it's also recently been descaled, in addition to regular cleaning of the filters, and still many items come out of the machine with a spray of grit/grime and food remnants all over them.

I phoned Bosch customer service in an attempt to obtain a price for a service to identify and resolve the problem, but even that was near impossible. I questioned if the call centre operator was in Australia as there was a time delay and the staff member had an accent and was not easy to understand. After giving all my details, I was then transferred again to the service area (still I believe not in this country), and I was advised there may be a long wait. When the call was answered, I was asked again for all the information I had previously provided about the machine. The call was frustrating, time consuming and in the end, I still didn't have the simple answer I requested about what the price of a call out would be. All too hard. I will now replace the machine with a superior brand. I won't be buying Bosch anything ever again.

Please read before buying – Okay so after being used twice a week our 28month old Bosch sms50e38au has died. With two different codes. Conveniently 4 months after warranty expired. No fault of the retailer. My only advice is get an extended warranty from your retailer or buy something else. Well unless you like throwing $$$$ away every couple of years. Bit disappointing when my parents dishwasher has lasted 15years. I won't be buying one again.  Show details

brilliant brand – I love my dishwasher, always had a bosch. Quite, energy/water saving feature. You really need to use better quality dish washing tablets and rinse aid for best results. Only gave a 4 out of 5 because we have had small food particles lodge themselves in the spinning arms in this cheaper model and you cannot open them to clean them out.  Show details ·  1

LOVE my Bosch dishwasher – This is our third dishwasher in 41 years and by far the best. It washes the dishes extremely well even stuck on cheesey stuff and most of all dries them well, unlike my previous Maytag dishwasher. It is nice and quiet. It hasn't got umpteen buttons and gadgets on there which I like, just the basics and it works well. We made the right choice by choosing Bosch. Very happy!  Show details ·  2

Super silent because it was constantly broken down – We've just endured 18 months of a very disappointing Bosch experience with the Super Silence Series 6 machine. After a few months, the door latch was found to be faulty. Cue nearly two month wait for repair. When finally fixed not one follow up call from Bosch. Another few months, another breakdown. Cue second wait for repair - not quite as long… Read more

but equally disruptive and disappointing for a busy family of 4. We gave Bosch another go with a new machine supplied by our retailer. And again, 11 months in, the Super Silent series stops working. We've had better longevity from a $20 Kmart kettle and lesser priced dishwashers. Bosch finally practice some customer service and offer a refund or an upgrade. Sorry, Bosch. It's you. Not us. We like to get what we pay for. And we have no more time or energy to sit on the phone or wait for a technician.

Excellent value of money – This is my first dishwasher and I bought it for myself as a retirement present. I can't believe I waited this long. I bought a Bosch based on Choice Magazine's recommendation although this particular model wasn't actually mentioned in the research so I was a bit worried that it may not meet my expectations. However, It is fantastic. I have no complaints. It is quiet and cleans really well. I will definitely consider a Bosch in my next home  Show details ·  1

Made the right choice – I was very happy with My New Bosch Dishwasher, It was delivered on time. the old one was taken away. It doses a good job at cleaning and drying the dishes. And the bonus is it can be set for a later time. Extremely quite. . would highly recommend it.  Show details ·  1

This dish washer is the quietest and most efficient machine we have had in our kitchen – It washes and dries the dishes with eerie silence. You have to listen very closely to tell that it is going about its business. The top utensils tray is a favourite in our house, making loading and unloading knives, forks and spoons an easy task. The quiet achiever of dish washing. The husbands friend.  Show details ·  1

Cheaply Made – The dishwasher itself works perfectly cleaning dishes very well unfortunately it has one major fault the finish on the front peels off. My dishwasher is two weeks old and already looks like it's five years old. The Bosch Customer Service said it's my fault for using chemicals on it I'd hardly call warm water and a microfibre cloth strong… Read more

chemicals. I noticed all the buttons also have the paint peeling off then I realised the soap residue on hands it's another chemical as per Bosch no chemicals allowed. The moral of the story is unless you can wear a full bio suit when touching the outside of the machine do not buy this product be warned.

Unlikely to purchase Bosch in future as dishwasher ceased to operate – I purchased Bosch dishwasher model SMS50E38AU in mid-2011. It has had little use as it's only used once per week and therefore it's washed approx. a minimal 250 loads since purchase, taking into account 5 weeks of non-use during absences from home. The dishwasher has now stopped working - the 'on/off' button switches the machine on but the 'start'… Read more

button will not start the wash cycle and the illuminated digital display that indicates the selected dishwashing program is also not working. After telephoning Bosch and discussing that machine ceased to work after the equivalent of only 35 weeks of daily use, I was provided with the telephone number of an external repair company. When I telephoned the repairer, I was advised that to the repair would cost a at least $220 (including a callout fee) and possibly more. I sent a letter of complaint via email to Bosch Customer Service / BHS Appliances stating that given the low usage of the dishwasher prior to breaking down, I considered that the dishwasher should be repaired under warranty and without cost to me. Now waiting for a reply. My other white goods (washing machine, clothes dryer, refrigerator, etc.) are Fisher & Paykel - all of which have lasted without problem for 20 years and are still going strong. It is unlikely that I will purchase Bosch in the future as the dishwasher was purported to be a quality, European-manufactured product and as such I anticipated it would work for a significantly longer period of time without requiring repair. It is certainly quiet (especially now that it's ceased working) and it cleaned the dishes well (they were always rinsed beforehand), although it has chipped the rims of a few bowls and cups, so I've assumed that the dishes must be subject to a pretty vigorous washing action.

Does the job – We purchased this dishwasher because it was in the lower price range of available options but came from a company with a good reputation. It gets the dishes clean and does the job but plastic items never come out dry, they always have to be air-dried. Also I have always rinsed everything before it goes in (to prevent blockage of the filter) yet I… Read more

still have to use the longest cycle (almost 2.5hrs) everytime or we have issues with dirty dishes. This doesn't bother us too much as we put the dishwasher on once a day, overnight and it is quite enough that it doesn't disturb anyone's sleep (all rooms are at least 5m from kitchen).

We did have one issue with functionality early on but Bosch sent out a technician who was friendly, helpful and fixed the problem quickly and easily. So credit to Bosch for their customer service in that situation.

Overall I feel it is a good machine for its price but it certainly won't blow you away with any amazing features or exceptional functionality.

Poor drying capability – This model is quiet and generally does a reasonable job at washing dishes, noting we generally rinse off dishes before loading, however it has never, ever dried them properly, be it glasses, plates, saucepans, plastics, cutlery.... leaving one of us needing to pick up a tea towel and dry the whole load every time. Disappointing customer service – My Bosch dishwasher broke after 3 years and 3 months, with an error code of E-15, so I booked a repairer. The repairer could not come for 2 and a half weeks, then cancelled at 1650 the day before they were meant to come, when I had taken a day off work. Bosch then gave the job to someone else who was going to charge more and was unable come for… Read more

another 2 weeks. The service was appalling and I have tried to speak to a manager with no luck. I would never buy a Bosch product again and instead of getting this dishwasher repaired I have bought another one, which will be installed in less time than it would take a repairer to come and look at the old one.

Bosch SMS50E52AU – Paid extra thinking we were getting a better brand made in Germany, however after 3 years & 2 months we waited ages to get a repairer in who now tells us it needs a new motherboard! To throw out or repair?? Am online now comparing other brands. Truly disappointed. Repairer advised us to steer clear of Bosch.

Extremely happy. So far so good – Great dishwasher so far. Purchased a month ago and it's been wonderful from the get go. lousy dishwasher and not needed.

It's quite a quiet machine and you'll barely even know you put it on unless you see the timer go down.

We have been using the 'normal' and 'intensive' settings. I favour the intensive setting as it has a higher temp and is 10 minutes quicker.

This machine doesn't have a 'child lock button' which I should have read into more. It does have a child lock door which is described only as 'child lock' in most cases. It's only a catch inside that causes a slight amount of resistance to prevent a child from flinging the door open, nothing flash.

I would recommend using the better brand tablets. We initially used morning fresh liquid capsules (with finish rinse aid) and our dishes came out no where near dry. Not really an issue for us but important for some. Finish seem to work better for this machine.

We have quite big plates and usually quite a lot of dishes (kids that get a new cup every single time??!). There is plenty of space and it's not fiddley to put dishes into, great design. Only fault I can see is our knives didn't quite fit the cutlery tray slots (slots are removable though).

All in all very happy with our purchase and would recommend it!

Error E24 in Bosch Dishwasher SMS50E38AU – If you repeatedly get a an E24 message and have checked everything, check this - the outlet spigot to the U pipe under the sink may not be drilled out properly by the plumber fitting the appliance, leaving a very small hole, and a lip on which collects a lot of junk, making the hole smaller. The pump on the machine is 30W (your fridge light uses 40w), and simply can't pump the water through the hole.  Show reply

Bosch Dishwasher SMS50E38AU are rubbish - very disappointed – Subsequent to my previous review October 2013 when we had a lot of service calls for our dishwasher Bosch replaced it with the same model around the end of 2013. We were very grateful for the replacement, sadly this came with no warranty which really disappointed us as it was a new dishwasher. The new one has been far from perfect, from time to… Read more

time we get the same E15 message, we have to empty the dishwasher, use towels to dry up any water, leave the dishwasher door open for days and then we can use it. Over the last couple of weeks we have tried this, our usual attempts to fix it haven't worked and now we have an E24 message. We are very disappointed with our Bosch dishwasher, we don't feel we should have to pay for a service call when the product is less than 18 months old. The reason why we originally purchased this dishwasher in the first place is that our old Bosch Dishwasher was great it lastdr nearly 15 years and never gave us a problem.

Not Happy Bosch - Cath Maris

Doesn't Clean – I was very surprised. I had thought being a Bosch it would be a good product but it's lousy. I use the best dishwashing powder cells money can buy and end up washing twice just about every wash. I also keep the rinse aid always topped up but it doesn't seem to make any difference. Quiet, simple to use. Doesn't wash correctly if at all.

Excellent in cleaning and so quiet – I researched dishwashers and decided on the Bosch Model SMS50E38AU - made in Turkey - Stainless steel from Harvey Norman for $729; could have got a better deal elsewhere but they were all out of stock and I could not wait. I went for the simplicity of control options and anti-flood. I found in the past after the 'fun' use of options you tend… Read more ·  1

to use the basics and the extra $ not worth it. I was also wary of reports of the plastic, stainless steel interior. Installed it the other night..only hassle is had to increase hole size because of the size of the water connection due to the anti flood unit, small price for safety and same for all brands. Set it up and ran a rinse cycle to 'clean' it. After the 12 year old Dishlex we were amazed at the noise level..we could barely hear it, the next day we ran a fill wash ..so quiet. The glasses and cutlery were so clean ..post etc great job as were the plates. I was worried about reports on the plastic interior ..there were no smells, the plastic may even increase the sound deadening. Time will tell. The issue of being made in Turkey is not a problem as I see it..German standards...Also when turned off all lights off no LED display on. PS I decided to take the time to write this as I found this site helpful and want to do the same. Good price, appearance, solid build cleans well and very quiet Time will tell
