The Breville Toast/Melt Sandwich Press BSG520BSS is one of the best sandwich presses one can buy – Overall, the Breville Toast/Melt Sandwich Press BSG520BSS is a well designed and constructed unit. The brushed stainless steel Floating Top Plate is well balanced and cooks evenly, automatically adjusting perfectly to all sizes of sandwiches every time. The added bonus is that the Top Plate is heat-insulted which is a unseen safety feature. Heat… Read more
distribution for cooking is excellent, providing an even cook on both sides. This unit has large non-slip feat - the largest I have seen in its class. Heats up and cooks fast. Breville have confidence in this product as they offer a 3-year guarantee on registration of purchase which in itself says a lot. The only one single problem is that it cooks too quickly so if one does not monitor the cooking process, the outsides will be done before the inner part of the sandwich. So one has to periodically switch off and back on at the wall to get a proper through-cook. That all-important missing feature that would qualify the Breville The Toast/Melt Sandwich Press BSG520BSS for a five-star rating, is a thermostat. Other than that, one of the best sandwich presses one can buy and an absolute pleasure to use.
Does what it says on the box – This is a really good sandwich press. It is solidly built, well designed and makes a great toastie. Its best feature is the variable height adjustment, you set the slide at the right to the thickness you want, and the top half of the press can't drop any lower than your set height. It means your toastie is "pressed" but not "squashed." I used to… Read more
have a cheap Aldi press that worked OK but had no height control, the darker it toasted, the flatter your sandwich. The Breville Toast & Met makes it "just right" every time.
The other advantage is, as it has a higher power heating element, you don't need to butter the outside of the sandwich. Just make the sandwich and put it in the toaster, the hotplates are hot enough to brown the bread without needing to butter the bread. This means lower fat sandwiches and less mess to clean up.
I occasionally use it to cook other things, it does great salmon fillets - place a piece of baking paper on the lower plate, add your salmon fillets, then another piece of baking paper over the top. Set the height adjustment so the top plate is resting on the fish fillet but not squashing it down. The result is perfectly cooked salmon fillets.
I highly recommend this product.
Surface coating gives up and forget the extended warranty !! – I purchased this press toaster and within 6 months the coating peeled off and rusted in spots. I swapped it for a new one and also registered online for the 3 year warranty. The box stated if you registered online you get the extra warranty. I am very careful with my appliances and do not use metal utensils to turn or remove food on them. I also… Read more
rub olive oil over the surface when finished. It has been 2 years and there is noticeable deterioration of the surface so I rang Breville regarding the warranty. A rather curt customer service rep gave me attitude and promptly told me that the 3 year warranty I applied for online does not cover the surface. Each time I wipe the surface with oil at the end of cooking, you can noticeably see black on the paper towel which would be the surface coming away. With health concerns over PFOA and PFTE used in production of this surface I say steer clear of most Breville non stick products until they change their surface and some of their staff with attitude !! Now as to the surface, I have a Sunbeam grill/toast that's over ten years old and no sign of the surface coming off ! Works well, compact, easy to use. Teflon surface deteriorates fairly quickly.

My old Sunbeam toaster broke down, and having repaired it once B4, I decided not to repair it again ( I do mu own repairs). The BSG220 is a great toaster. There is a significant quality difference between Breville and Sunbeam. The coating is smooth and toast comes out golden brown on most breads. There was a smell initially, I think its the coating, but I got rid of it by spreading oil on the coating, heating it up and wiping the hot oil off. Show details
Simply toasts evenly and quickly – Our last Breville sandwich press lasted 10+ years, and we decided to upgrade to the latest version. I looked at the other brands, but in reality they didn't look that good. The new one looks and feels the same, but that's where normality stops. This one heats up twice as quick and heat distribution is evenly spread across the whole surface. … Read more
Results are just what you want. Quick golden toasties done even before you can get all the stuff back in the fridge.
Cleaning is simples. The only issue is getting over exuberant during the cleaning process and touching the hot (dam hot) surface - ouchies. Maybe supervise younglings if they're attempting to make 'something - usually with lava cheese'.
I suppose if I was wanting an improvement for the future (when I buy my next one in 2033) I would like the toasties to eject from the machine once ready, thus eliminating the embarrassment of swearing.
Easy to Clean – Great machine, gets to temp very quickly, super easy to clean if you make a filling mess like me. Very reasonably priced also, paid 89 at Harvey Norman in 2022 Show details
Great machine, one flaw – Had ours for about 5 years now, still going strong. Given its age, its falling apart a little, the cover for the light on top has fallen off somewhere and its a bit scraggly. Anyhow, I would recommend it. i use it for everything!! I have made pancakes in it, burritos, I have sliced pumpkin, courgette, tofu, and cooked them when i can't be bothered… Read more
using my frying pan - and I barely need to use oil. I've assembled vegetable terraines by cooking my veges in it. Its so fast and easy to clean. the only issue i have ever had is when toasting 4 sandwiches at a time, the press tends to squash the sandwiches at the back more and on an angle. Totally minor issue.
Excellent! Would 100% recommend – Received as a house-warming gift about 14 months ago. After asking for one for YEARS and putting up with kmart ones. This machine is sturdy. It heats up quickly and is easy to clean. I have used it instead of a frying pan to make tortillas (home made) and I have melted cheese on it to just let it cool and go crispy (great snack don't judge). It… Read more
will make pizzas with the melt function - I do recommend putting the pizza on baking paper and then transferring to the oven for a quick grill to brown your cheese. That's why it got 4 stars not 5. Also when it's on melt, the top sits a little unevenly. It's also great for toasties. 100% recommend this product.
Sturdy machine that does the job – I’ve had mine for 18 years and it’s still going. I use it constantly. Great size for a family. Apart from toasties I also use it to heat up leftover pizza, make quesadillas, grill bacon, crisp up leftover spanakopita after it’s been in the microwave and more. You could probably fry an egg on it but I’ve never tried it. I reckon it’ll keep going for another 18 years. Show details
Great Product – I have had many other Breville products and decided to buy another Breville product when choosing from similar options. I have been using this Toast/Melt press for couple of weeks now and am very happy with overall performance. There is an option on the side to raise the height of the closing lid to not press the sandwitch. When sandwitch is not… Read more
pressed then it doesn't become crispy. Heating is quite quick.
The only reasons for giving it 4 star (not 5 star) are: 1. There is no button to switch on/off the press. You will have to switch on/off the main supply every time. 2. In this age of technology, there should have been an option to set the temperature for Toast/Melt. Without that option, I have to raise the lid every minute to see, if the bread/toast is hot enough.
Does as expected – I had a Breville sandwich press before this and that lasted over 10 years. Decided to bite the bullet and go with another Breville. Not disappointed at all. It toasts both open faced sandwiches as well as normal sandwiches. Doesn't take too long to warm up either. The non-stick makes it easy to clean up after but I do clean after every use. Been 3 years now and can't complain. Show details
Wonderful machine, does the job quickly and efficiently – I use it to make sandwiches with a filling and grilled cheese . Feels heavy and well built as opposed to a cheapie Kmart sandwich maker. It is super quick to heat and makes nice crispy sandwich if you leave the sandwich there for sometime as the machine goes on for it's heating up on/off cycles. Non stick coating is excellent and it is easy to clean.
Great 2 slice sandwich press – Very happy with this purchase. It's compact and light so I can easily pick it up and store it away in the cupboard. It is very quick to heat up and my toasties are done before I've made my coffee. The browning is even on the sandwiches, which is what I like. Quick and easy if you also want to cook your steaks on it too. Very simple to clean. Wish… Read more
they made the exterior so your fingerprints didn't appear all over it but that's my only issue. Otherwise it also has the adjustable height which many of the cheaper ones don't have. So far so good.

Excellent sandwich press – This item is great and has lasted over two years already which unfortunately considering the crappy quality of manufacturing today and also serious issues I've had with other Breville products is doing very well. No complaints, it does what it is supposed to and it does it well.
Perfect combo: toast and melt – Loved the adjustable height for the sandwiches press. The heating is faster then our previous Sunbeam. I like the cord wrap in the middle (underneath) the appliance, however the cord is a bit short. Not sure if longevity but for now I loved the ideas of toast and melt in one. Show details
Open Grill function doesn't work well – It makes great toasted sandwiches ,but annoyingly if you want to make more than one (and I find making 2 at a time means one of them won't be cooked properly) you have to turn the machine off and totally let it cool down or the ready light will display early and the second sandwich will not be toasted properly ! The open grill never worked well… Read more
and after 2 years it is even worse . The ready light turns on well before the cheese is melted on your muffin meaning you have to turn it off and cool the machine half way through cooking and then turn it on again and try again. I have had to do this 3 times just to get the muffin I wanted for lunch done and I'm done with this Breville now !!!
Great little machine – Just needed a small but good sandwich maker - this is a small one but more than big enough for me. Heats quickly and cooks evenly. Has two non-stick flat plates that are easy to clean. Very happy. Show details
Every home should have one – Have one for 7 years, going strong. Sandwiches, melts, cooking bacon or chicken strips is great. Plates are getting a little worn, time for a new one. Well used and loved. Show details
Great sandwich maker – Replaced another breville grill model which was years old. Happy with the new product, easy to toast anything, cleans easily by wiping and 4 slice makes it easier for larger items. Show details
Very compact design but does the job perfectly – Easy to use, just plug in and switch on the power and there you go. Heat up or toast, whatever you want done in 1 min. We love the it as it is compact and won't take up too much of the space. Show details
Awesome, use it all the time – We bought another one of these after having one for about 7 years which we used on an almost daily basis after the power cord started shorting every now and then. The old one worked perfectly for years and the latest one seems to be just as good, doesn't burn the outside of your bread like some sandwich presses do Show details
We use this everyday! – We had one of these for about 5 years and it’s still going strong, we just moved and had to leave it behind with our housemates, so we bought another one for our new house! It’s a must have!! Fool proof. Just turn it on and wait for the green light. You can set it to a particular height too. We cook so much stuff in since we don’t have an oven or… Read more
hot plate at the moment. We use it for bacon and eggs, sausages, chicken, crunchy toast, sliced vegetables like zucchini and sweet potato... the list goes on!!

Ensure you get a product like this one with a floating hinge! – Previously we had a Brefille machine which produced toasties only. When it came to replacing it after years a servic , a friend advised us to pay a little extra and purchase a Toast and Melt that incorporated a floating hinge. This proved excellent advice. The hinge enables us to make toasties and open melts of different heights and types with… Read more
ease. The teenager in the household and his friends can easily make different creations themselves - an instant solution to after school hunger pangs or a quick lunch. We have a number of Breville products in our home and they always give a high degree of satisfaction.
Fast sandwich toaster – Bought this model after our old one kept setting off the safety switch. Was about 10 years old so was still pretty happy with past purchase. This upgraded model has two flat plates which is better than the old grill plate. Heats up really quickly and toasts really evenly. Being able to lock the hinge at different heights is great to avoid… Read more
squashing all the filling out of the sandwich when only toasting one. No need to lock the hinge when toasting four. Great appliance.
Good sandwich maker – I use this most mornings at breakfast time. It heats quickly, cooks evenly and overall I am impressed with it. Hopefully it lasts a long time. I am little nervous about the longevity given that I have had three other small Breville appliances that failed within a year, but if it continues to cook as well as it has then I would be happy to recommend this product. The best kitchen appliance I own! – I was in the need of a new sandwich press and this is hands down the best product I have in my kitchen. I cook every day on it! Keep on toasting – I am so happy with my choice of Breville BSG220. It's even cooking temperature allows everyone eats at the same time. Easy to clean with storage a breeze. Simply wipe over after cooking. The chrome finish looks classy, shinning up well with a damp cloth and a towel to add shine. The on/off red/green icons reminds one to turn off the unit when finished. Disappointed – This was by far the best Christmas present I had ever gotten. So useful in the kitchen. You can use it to cook a variety of different things, homemade chicken schnitzel being my all time fav. However I used it this morning just to make some toast for breaky and not long after being switched on I could smell burning. I lifted it up and my toast… Read more
was stuck to the top and was charred all on one side and completely black. I re put more bread in and the exact same thing happened. I then switched it off and on again and it won't work at all now. Pity it is a month after a years warranty. So disappointed.
Excellent Sandwich press – I love my breville BSG520 sandwich press.I bought it from MYER when it was 20% off and after that use regularly. As a busy mom It help me to make all our breakfast and lunch very quickly. It perfectly fit into large size bread and can make open melted sandwiches too.Quick heat up and easy cleaning is plus points. Show details
Fantastic product – I have the Breville Toast & Melt 4-Slice Sandwich Press and it’s excellent great for a family and you can do so much more then just toast sandwiches, I’ve done eggplant, zucchini and haloumi cheese they have turned out delicious. Great product! – Breville Toast & Melt 4-Slice Sandwich Press is a great product. Perfect size for a family of 4. damp sponge after each use. Stainless steel finish shows prints and needs a good wipe to keep clean.Cord can be wound around under base for easy storage.
Extremely slow to melt – Purchased for our small 4 staff lunch room. It toasts ok, but the melt function is almost useless. Have tried repeatedly & even after 10 minutes heat up time, it does not melt the cheese unless you drop the top plate onto it & then, obviously, the cheese sticks! The issue could be that the top plate does not lie flat when on "melt". It sits on an angle. Very disappointed that it takes my lunch break to make a melt! It is also very, very heavy. Show details
Great toastie toastie maker! – My previous Breville lasted over 10 years and I hope this one lasts just as long. Early days to determine longevity on this one but so far it behaves well and seems to be of a similar quality. Main difference is that the unit squeaks slightly as you open and close. Interestingly, the display did the same. Obviously this will not affect the quality of the toastie so a very minor issue that could be improved. Show details
