Excellent – This camera is great for the novis who wants a little extra in a digital camera. Very easy to use and takes great photos. can also buy lens kits to suit your needs. I got a 18 - 55 and 75 - 300ml kit. Great lite camera, very easy to use. Takes great photos. Camera stablised and lens (if purchased). One of the only cameras on the market with live view. a tad bulky, but thats expected in a SLR.

Excellent – This is also my first DSLR and I am overall pretty happy with it. I have taken lots of great photos with it. I also looked at other DSLR cameras but the features and quality of this camera are alot better than most. Unfortunately I got this camera just before the release of the 500D which has digital video and 15.1 MP, but its priced over $2000.… Read more

No regrets yet. Lightweight and very easy to use for first-time DSLR buyer. Pretty expensive accessories from the canon range.

Excellent – This is my first slr camera and I absolutely love using it! The picture quality is fantastic and you will really notice the difference in the quality compared to a point and shoot camera. With a number of pre-set settings (eg. portrait, landscape), you have the option of using these until you get more comfortable with using your own settings in… Read more

the manual modes (the pictures are still fantastic.) You will find that often no extra editing in Photoshop is required, as the camera takes care of everything! This camera is incredibily easy to use, the manual is easy to comprehend and overall the camera is extremely good value for money, a real quality product from Canon for SLR beginners and amateur photographers. Easy to use, good starter slr, good value for money

great camera – when i brought this slr i found it very confusing to use all the functions but now that i have had it for a while it is super easy. my auto focus makes a terrible noise when i use the bigger lens and it is going to cost a fair bit to get it fixed but i can live with that. takes excellent close ups and long distance photos. cant really fault it but wish it had a tripod that went with it. light and easy to change lens' auto focus a bit dodgy

Great results – I found this camera to give great results. Easy to use and has great functions. The only down fall was the lens that came with the package which seized up and is more costly to fix and cheaper to replace.

OK – A mild refresh to the 400D brings the welcome addition of live view, but not much else for the price. Great for a beginner, but enthusiasts should look elsewhere Reasonably quick autofocus, although not as fast as it could be. Typical Canon colors and contrast in images - great saturation if you like that sort of thing. Higher resolution sensor… Read more

over the 400D brings it up to date with newer competition.

Extensive range of Canon SLR lenses, although crop factor does reduce the usefulness of wide angle lenses. Grip is still too small for those big American hands.

Autofocus still a bit slow in low light situations.

Questionable build quality for a camera at this price point, although not a problem if you are gentle with your equipment.

Live view implementation a bit clunky compared to offerings from competitors.

gear, more options than compact. Better images, larger images, out of focus, speed and iso. when it gets dirt inside the lens but this is very rare and how much you look after the camera.

Excellent – I love this digital SLR. I bought this Christmas last year and took it everywhere with me in summer. It has handy easy to use quick photo settings which is convenient but I prefer to use the manual settings. The Canon 450D came with a fantastic kit 18-55mm and 55-250mm lens, perfect for starter shots. It easy to learn about depth of field and… Read more

shutter speeds without using the manual or training. This camera has allowed me to take perfect, creative shots every time.

I guess the only dowmside about this is the noise it makes with the shutter releas. Too bad if you wanted to quietly take a snap. I love the large LCD and 12 Mega pixels of clarity! I also like the positioning of the controls for quick ease of use. I have since pampered this camera with many attachments and gadgets and will keep on taking great shots, Fantastic camera! Takes great clear shots.

Easy to you and great for the novice like myself! Makes a noise when the shutter is released.

Excellent – Overall this camera is excellent value for money. I bought this 2 months ago for my girlfriend who is an aspiring photographer and she is absolutely rapped by its clarity and functionality. She has since joined a course to learn professionally and it has been a good choice of camera. its a perfect slr for starters

Good – This is my second SLR camera, first digital one (the previous was Canon EOS Lite IV). Like others mentioned, it's a great beginners camera, but also good 'on the side' SLR if you don't want to carry the bulkier 5DMarkII. It's packed with all the manual controls you would look for in an SLR. The only complaints I have are about the grip being a… Read more

bit too small, a simple turnaround would be to get the optional BG-E5 grip (highly recommend it) ; the liveview mode is not as easy to get used to (coming from a point and shoot Canon S2 IS Pro); it only allows a maximum of ISO 1600 which I find too noisy to use (except in Monochrome).

Overall, it's a great camera for its price and features. The battery grip allows you to use AA batteries (gets around 1500 shots some with flash).

It's sad that Canon did not include a video mode. Perhaps in the upcoming replacement. Canon are you listening? Good value, relatively light, big LCD, Liveview, uses SD cards Hand grip a bit too smal, Liveview mode not very user friendly, no video mode, no flash sync plug, only ISO1600 which is pretty grainy.

Excellent – If you already have the 400D, or even the 350D, it would be hard to justify upgrading to this, but as a first SLR it's outstanding. A lot of features for your money and, most importantly, excellent picture quality. Overall feel and build quality is very good. Nice big screen, sensible control layout. Lots of little enhancements from the 400D which… Read more

add up to a fantastic package. Takes really good photos without needing to delve deep into the settings, although there are full advanced options there when you need it. It's compatible with all the old lenses, so there are already loads of good lenses to choose from. No video. Yes, it's an SLR, but Nikon has started incorporating video now, and for someone moving up from a point and shoot this may be important.

Excellent – This is my first DSLR and it should give me excellent service for years to come. Lots of accessories (non-genuine) available on e-bay at much better prices than Canon's. It doex everything I want, limited only by my abilities when using the manual settings. Relatively lightweight, versatile. 12.2MP is as good as I need, I use Sigma lenses with… Read more

great results. Handgrip slightly small for me but the battery grip (non genuine from e-bay for just over UD100 with two batteries) make life easier.
