Overall: THE GOOD: Great resolution, great lens, nice colour reproduction. Option to go manual. Features like movie mode and stitch assist work well. Size, weight, solid build. Battery life.
THE BAD: Autofocus is horrid. You have to be focusing on a real contrasty subject to get a focus lock Multicontroller is very hit-or-miss Macro focus is useless Proprietary battery Zoom speed could be a litle faster.
OVERALL: I bought this camera to get myself into the digital photography world. I wanted a portable functional camera that had the option to go manual and of course took great pictures. This camera had all of those things, it's a solid little camera that you can take anywhere and the resolution is excellent and you do have the option to go full manual if needed. The camera does have it's negative aspects of course, as all digital cameras do. The autofocus on this camera is pretty bad, you need to be focusing on a very contrasty subject in order to get a focus lock and the macro focus is useless. Also, using the multicontroller can be aggravating, because it's so small, it's hard to navigate through the menus and select a setting. Overall though, the camera is very functional and I can't wait to get the underwater case!
Pros: I love that it is tough so can survive being dropped. Nice and compact. Great Images !
Especially love being able to take small movies with it. I use this function a lot.
Cons: Too many settings etc to remember when you don't use them all the time and have to refer back to book. Zoom on small movie function could be a lot better. Can only zoom once and start taking movie. Would be better if you could zoom as much as you can using the camera function when taking movie clips. So for example, taking movie clips at kids school assemblies you cannot zoom in enough when standing at the back of the crowd in order to recognise your child in the clip. Movie clip function best when used close up in other words.
Overall: Tough, nicely sized, great image quality camera. Small movie function a great bonus and I use all the time. Re-chargeable battery lasts extremely well considering I use this function a lot. Advice would be to get an extra battery for back up and a larger memory card than the one supplied. I am extremely happy with my photo's and I'm no photographer. Colour, crispness and general quality cannot be faulted with this camera. Zoom very good.
Pros: Great functions for both automatic and manual settings. The high resolution setting is more than adequate for photo quality enlargements. Slow motion shooting is good and the fast action setting is great.
Cons: Night time photography is always a problem for digital cameras, and this camera is no exception. It will capture the moment, but it may take a few attempts.
Overall: The Canon Powershot S45 is compact, fully functionable, durable and easy to use. It's a little heavy due to it's battery but it will last a full day of touring whilst on holidays. A spare battery solves that. I've always been happy with the quality of the output, which happens to be better than the old compact camera.
Pros: Robust metal casing
Powerful RAW image mode
Excellent image quality
Included Lithium Ion battery and charger
Flash is poweful enough for most snaps
Exposure usually spot on
Cons: Not very wide at 35mm
Slow to respond between photos
Autofocus in macro mode slow and inacurrate in low light
Camera case not included, Canon option too expensive but a nice fit for camera and 1 extra card
Slowish auto focus
Poor red eye reduction
Fiddly 4 way controller
Overall: A great camera for snapping away with, but not quite small enough for the pocket! RAW mode a real plus for keen photographers.
Most of the above bad points relate to most Canon compact digitals and would need to be weighed up against the good points.
Pros: Nice light little camera. Great image quality, long battery life.
Cons: Limited flash, an external flash fixes the problem. Flash is good for average happy snaps.
Overall: Works in -25oC and 42oC. I have taken it every where and has not failed. Will suvive a fall down a full flight of stairs with the fireplace catching it at the bottom. Great for happy snaps and better quality images.
