Dyson DC24 Vacum Cleaner - availability of spare parts – I am very happy with the Vac - works & performs well, my only challenge was in trying to source a replacement part - specifically the telescopic Vacum hose. I accidentally over stretched my vac's hose causing it to tear, I am quite handy myself and was intending to replace the damaged hose myself, my results are to be advised. Show 2 replies

Will never purchase a Dyson product again – I purchased a Dyson vacuum cleaner 11 years ago, because I was told by my mother that it was the greatest vacuum cleaner on the market and did the best job of getting down deep into the carpet as well as never losing suction. While it is true that it never loses suction, the design of the hose and the head means that even the smallest item build… Read more

up can cause the head or the hose to block up and as the blockages are difficult to locate as sections of the machine are hard to pull apart, it makes the machine very hard to use. When my mum died I got her DC24, I thought that maybe a simpler vacuum cleaner would perhaps perform better as there were less spaces to get blocked. I attempted to use it for the first time and discovered there was no suction in the head. After much searching, I discovered it was because the hose on the side had come away. I reattached that and again attempted to use it, it worked for about 10 minutes and then again stopped working. I rang customer service who, after having me do a search for blockages and finding none, told me that the machine seemed to have a problem and needed a service. I have declined and decided to dispose of the DC24, I will also be replacing the bigger machine in the near future. The machine that I had prior to the dyson picked up anything and never ever blocked. I will probably return to using that.

Very good performance, compact with small footprint – For some years we had a decent Electrolux vacuum, which is still fine. But it only works well if I stick a new bag in it, and after 5 min there is noticeable drop in suction. So I got sick of it and bought this Dyson. It is very compact, one unit - no hoses and wands, so it is very handy to store. Performance is great, no issues at all - no drop… Read more

in suction, picks everything up. It is very easy to move past furniture as it has this rolling ball design.

The main issues are:

- the cord is attached in the middle - not convenient, it would have been better if it was attached at the wand handle (I have to hold it with my hand together with the wand, otherwise it is quite awkward to use)

- if you need to set up a wand to reach under furniture etc, it is quite a procedure, but this is a price to pay for compactness. We bought a handheld Dyson and use it instead for those jobs requiring the wand.

- removing spinning brush to untangle hair almost needs an engineering degree, and not very clearly indicated on the unit, in contrast to all other instruction hints elsewhere on it, which are clear and well thought through

- pet hair gets stuck in the receptacle and doesn't just drop on its own - need some help from your fingers (not sure if anything can be done here) Performance, ergonomics How cord is attached, brush removal for cleaning procedure, wand "deployment" procedure

Not as good as I expected... but I guess it could be worse – The motorised head sucks very well, and the vacuum is light and easy to manoeuvre - but - that's where the positives end. • The biggest problem - from day 1 - is the pipe for doing edges, corners etc. is a big disappointment - the suction is almost non-existent and picks up next to nothing - I mean, my $40 dust buster does a better job along… Read more

skirting boards.

• Another issue is the sticky button. From day 1, the button you need to push to turn the motorised head on/off needs to be flicked/fiddled with to make it respond.

• Lastly, when switching to or from pipe mode, I need to manually shift the pipe near the bottom of the vacuum to re-direct where I need the suction to aim at (pipe or vacuum head).

Ultimately, these are issues I have been willing to live with for the past 3 or so years... only because I can't afford another vacuum at the present time. I did contact Dyson soon after purchase to ask for help with the (first two) issues I listed but was told that the pipe was "not designed to give great suction" and "the sticky button should come good after a while"... I still have trouble to this day! Needless to say, I was disappointed by Dyson's lack of interest in my concerns.

I'd never previously owned a Dyson before this one but bought it because it came so highly recommended by a family member and the sales person told me Dyson was the best vacuum on the market. I was seriously disappointed with it after all the money I spent. I regret giving my old Miele to my sister.

If the vacuum head itself didn't do such a good job and wasn't so easy to manoeuvre then I wouldn't be giving this product 3 stars. Easy to manoeuvre, good suction by the motorised head. Expensive, sticky buttons, next to no suction in pipe mode, Dyson rep was dismissive of my concerns.

DC24 works for us – Having finally run out of patience with a Godfrey’s recommended Wertheim, my wife purchased a DC24 around two years ago. The problems with the Wertheim were annoying rather than expensive (always steered itself into a tangle which eventually kinked the hose, cord wouldn’t retract properly, bags often blew off and the small brush head closed up… Read more ·  1

under full suction) so we deliberately chose something that would avoid these issues and generally be ergonomic. In fairness to the Wertheim, I should add that we previously had a ducted system in a two storey four bed, two bath house which sets a pretty high benchmark for conventional vacuums.

As we now live in a 100m2 high rise apartment with mostly wooden floors/ tiles and have no pets we mainly wanted something that could quickly cover the whole place. Although there was definitely a familiarisation period, we instantly found the DC24 way easier to use than the Wertheim and can now thoroughly do the whole place in around twenty minutes. We typically vacuum and (Enyo) mop once a week with a quick vacuum only (without moving furniture) in between. We did learn a couple of things that others may find useful as the owner manual is like many these days, somewhat terse:

• Adding a 3m extension cord allows us full coverage from one power outlet.

• While the ball steering is precise going forward (pushing away), it is hard to handle in reverse (pulling back).

• When using tools other than the main head, the light weight means it is often easier to carry rather than roll the unit.

• The motorised brush head is easy to toggle on and off when doing the many rugs and two areas of carpet we have.

• As one of us has long hair, removing and cleaning the brush spindle is worthwhile (and easy as the spindle has notches that allow you to cut the wound up hair with scissors).

• We take the dust bowl downstairs and empty direct to a wheelie bin (opening and shaking after closing the lid on the arm holding it) as much of the dust collected is very fine.

• Registering with Dyson gets you an email reminder to clean the filters (every six months I think) which is also a simple process (the top filter can be sat inside the dust bowl which is filled with water a few times to effectively “backwash” it).

Given our experience, I was quite surprised to read some of the vitriolic reviews but do agree that working with the wand takes a little getting used to and yes, having it lock in the retracted position would have been smarter but can honestly say that we have noticed no loss of suction and expect this vacuum will last a few more years at least.

Hope this is helpful as I think Dyson has put some effort into making a range of products that actually work for everybody (rather than just knocking out cr*p as cheaply as possible) and in any event, this site generally enable consumers to make informed decisions once the number of reviews exceeds thirty.

Surprised it isn't better – I wanted a Dyson because I thought it would be vacuuming nirvana. But every time I empty it and have to pull the contents of the muck cup out with my hand, and every time I go over a feather half a dozen times to convince the cleaner to suck it up, and every time I have to pick the bits along the skirting boards out into the field of the cleaner's… Read more

range, I feel let down. I don't ever bother to use the hand tools because the hose is so stiff that the whole unit tips over whenever I try. It's surprisingly heavy and I even have to lift the cleaner over a pine nut to pick it up rather than push it around. I haven't had mechanical issues or had to replace any parts. But otherwise it is not the answer to vacuuming that I expected a Dyson to be.

Just don't buy! – True, many things about the DC24 are good to excellent. However what must be said is that the $90 power head on these die in a blaze of sparks and smoke every few years. The motor they have used is UNDERRATED for Australian mains. To not get 8-10 years out of an expensive brand name vacuum cleaner without having to buy a new head every 2-4 years is just not good enough.

Does the job but could be better – It's a good vacuum cleaner but had to buy spare parts such as new brush motor head for it and sometimes it doesn't suck as well due to deterioration of side tube that now needs replacing through wear and tear and it's a bit bulky and can't get under furniture with such as beds because of the angle of the handle from the head. All WAS going well until – This vacuum cleaner was very good at cleaning carpet and floors, I've had it for just over 2 years. I was very proud of it until today, now that I've realised I too have a problem with the power head. So sad about it. The realisation that it's not something that can be fixed and an expensive part that has to be replaced. I've gone through all… Read more

the trouble-shooting, I reset the brush last week and it got going again, but it's had it again this week. The grey brush button does not click up or down, it's just depressed and can be pulled up again with your fingernail but there is no discernable engaging of anything with the button. I've gone through the brush clean and reset. The red reset button does not depress. With the power head off I can feel the suction, put the power head back on....there's nothing... . :( So the problem is with the power head. I paid $650 for this machine thinking I had the "ducks guts" of a vacuum cleaner. Now that I think about it, I'm pretty peeved I've had two people I know tell me the Shark Navigator is good. I'm going to go read those reviews now. Great cleaning results, the ball makes it very easy to move around, fits perfectly between dining chairs when vacuuming, can see all the dirt picked up. Light to pick up. I like the fact that you clean your filters and don't have to replace them. Obviously the expensive to replace POWER HEAD doesn't work after about 2 years. Not convenient to use in other modes, ie: a pain to try and use for the car, or skirting boards etc. Very expensive. Disappointment that Dyson and the price of it, does not mean quality. I thought I was paying for clever design and quality.

Do not purchase this Cleaner – Motorised head stopped working completely after 9 months. Prior to that it worked intermittently. Cord is a metre & a half too short & gets twisted up very easily. Small canister needs to emptied quite frequently. Poor Suction power & we clean a small house. Not worth the price paid. Compact and lightweight. See above. Over-rated & overpriced. Do Not Buy this Cleaner. Waste of money. Does not do a satisfactory job.

I wish I had listened to my friends – Worst vacuum cleaner I have owned! You have to keep cleaning it out, the filter is very difficult to get to, and the extension hose is cumbersome to change from vacuuming, unwieldy, kinks, never reaches the curtain rods or ceiling and is rigid. Great Little Vac! – This vacuum is great! I was shocked at how much dirt and dust it picks up! I didn't realize there was that much in my carpet! ceilings so it's not really a surprise) It doesn't pick up bigger items so when my son has decided on an art project that leaves tiny cut up bits of paper on the floor, I'm on my hands and knees as I know this vac just won't work in that area. I love emptying it just press button over my bin and give it a little shake, the barrel fills up fast, I empty it after every room as I like to keep the suction as strong as possible, cleaning it is easy as I love pulling things apart to see how they work so about once a month I pull off everything I can and give it a thorough clean, washing the filters and removing hair from brush head. The suction is so strong! And I don't mind that the ball makes it hard to vac along walls as once I vac a room I then use the extension handle to vac along the sideboards and up in the corners. All in all I love this vacuum and after 6 months it still works like new. I would and do recommend dyson :D Strong suction, ease of use, easy to pull apart and clean. Extension handle could be longer or at least flexible as to vacuum along the tops of doors I have to lean out and stretch up at a weird angle but meh who looks up there anyway? :)

Extremely disappointed – We bought this after years of wanting a Dyson. After some months of relying on my husband's $20 garage vac, i recently returned it to Dyson only to be told i must have used it for renovations and the renovation dust has wrecked the motor which will cost us $180 bucks to repair. Um, we have wooden floors and a couple of rugs. The only renovation dust it could have picked up would have been minimal left over after clean up. What the hell is a vacuum for if not TO SUCK UP DUST? I am so disappointed that i feel completely cheated of the promise of these vacuums. Not much. The DC24 sucks. Or I wish it did – Lightweight toy, that's all I can say. I bought the DC24 to appease my wife, who liked a compact and lightweight vacuum cleaner. premature breakage. This is a design fault rather than a manufacturing one. To Dyson's credit, they replaced the hose without charge. Suctionwise, the DC24 isn't too bad for smaller houses. Just don't use this for larger carpeted areas. The ball is overrated in my opinion.

Be careful when you try and pick up the DC24. Grab it by the main handle, which is what most people do, and the extension wand will come out. You have to use the less intuitive method of picking it up by the barrel handle. For my next vacuum, I intend to buy a DC33, which appears to be a more robust cleaner. Enough of toys. Compact, lightweight, kept my wife happy. Not very robust, not good for larger areas, short hose.

time which is usually the case!! It picks up so much dirt and dust you wouldn't even realise is there! I love the upright model, it's so much easier on the back as well! I've always disliked the traditional pull around vacuums with their clumsy hoses and such! It is such a handy little cleaner. The only thing is that if if I need to vacuum on top of the air conditioner up high or high on the blinds, the telescopic wand is not quite long enough, so I end up picking the whole vacuum cleaner up in one hand (lucky it is light) and holding the wand in the other, which gets the job done!! Also, I've found if the power head (great for carpets) is left "on" while doing the hard floors it can be less effective at picking up fluff etc, so I just make sure I turn it off which is a simple button off!!! I've bought a few attachments for blinds and so on which are great however I am disappointed that the mini power head attachment that can be purchased for car upholstery etc doesn't fit this model! If I had a bigger broom cupboard I would definitely buy a bigger upright dyson as they seem to have more options with the attachments ... or buy a hand held dyson for the car ... eventually!!! Fantastic at picking up deep down dirt and is small, compact and easy to push around Doesn't fit the dyson mini power head attachment, telescopic wand is a bit short and awkward for vacuuming up high

the cleaning head.

Also, you will need to hold the electric cord in one hand when using it - it is not retractable. To use the other head (to clean skirting boards, or high up places) you will have to carry the cleaner because it is unstable. It is a stupid feature that to use the other cleaning heads, you need to take out the handle, turn it around and then attach the other parts. This is a waste of time and effort.

Don't believe the picture in the instructions of the person cleaning the stairs!!! The hose does not stay extended, so you will be battling the hose retracting, while trying to get into the corners, or the skirting boards, or under cupboards, etc. The extendable hose is too short and makes use awkward. The extension arm does not pivot, and so you will be using your wrists to direct the cleaning head against skirting boards, etc. This becomes quite painful after a few minutes. It is a very awkward vacuum cleaner to use. Badly designed, I can see there is going to be problems with the electric head, but at that time I will probably throw the thing away rather than try and get it repaired.

expensive, not powerful, clumsy, cumbersome to use, non-retractable cord.

Waste of money-Don't buy – Sent it for repairs after 2 months (hepa filter stopped and hardly any suction)-seems that it was because we used vacuuming powder- a no no. So we stopped. am using my wrist rather than twisting my back. This product is also lightweight, not at all heavy to lift for those that struggle carrying their vacuum around the house.

Powerhead

The powerhead on the vacuum thumps the carpet if you like agitating the dirt allowing it to be sucked up providing a deeper clean. This is inbuilt in this product which is a bonus as with the barrel vacuums if you wanted this feature it would cost an extra $120.

Versatility

This product also has the versatility of a small hose which comes up from the handle allowing you to add attachments (come with vacuum) to clean the blinds or under the couch.

Hepa Filter

This filter is suited to allergy sufferers and pet owners. The filters are easy to access and easy to clean - either put in the washing machine or handwash and pop back in and your ready to go.

Emptying

Super easy and cleaning with a toothbrush NOT necessary! I hated having to get my hands into my old vacuum to get the hair etc out of the filter and with the dyson i press one button to release the catcher from the vacuum and one more to open the bottom of the barrel over the bin to empty its contents.

Price

This vacuum cost me $650 although pricy to me for the relief it gave my back, how much less time consuming vacuuming became and how efficient the vacuum is it is worth every penny.

Downside.

If i had to pick a downside it would be that i didn't purchase the DC25 which has a larger catcher barrel - i made the decision to buy the smaller one as i only have 3 carpeted rooms and a rug that i vacuum however i do find the barrel fills up very quickly. Maneuverability, Ease of Use, Efficiency Small Catcher Barrel

barrel annoying to lug around.

OMG - the first time I used the Dyson I was shocked at what came out of the carpet and emptied the canister several times. It was mainly dust and grit that the other cleaner just didn't seem to pick up. I also noticed immediately that the house was less dusty and the air wasn't full of those floaty specks. After using the Dyson quite a few times now there is no more grit coming up, so it has really done its job. It is also fabulous at getting up at the cat fur on the carpet. I have a tiny lino kitchen floor and bathroom tiled floor, and it does those areas very well. I thought my place was clean before but I was wrong. The Dyson is great and I no longer feel guilty about what it cost. Easy to use, easy to empty and it really works. Expensive.

This is perfect, best vacuum ever – Best $500 ever spent. I can't live without this vacuum. It cleans the floors spotlessly, it is very easy to use and not heavy to push around. We went through so many vacuums that didn't suck properly or broke after a few months, until this one. No problems so far. With 4 young kids and floors that get very messy, this vacuum is amazing. Noisy, expensive

Great performance – I love this vacuum and would never own any other brand now. It's great for pet hair and it's the only vacuum I've owned that actually gets it out. I prefer upright because it's easier on my back. I also have a Dyson handheld for the little spills. Highly recommend for pet owners. Very powerful Expensive
