Really sad and dissapointed – You know the sayings "You pay for what you get", and "Quality costs money"? Well we bought a very expensive refrigerator around 10 - 15 years ago [ sorry, but I am now on my own, and I cannot remember dates :-( ] and we opted to pay near top dollar for what we hoped would be a top quality fridge. None of this cheap labour stuff - ours was made in the US [ show proud salute ] and had a long guarantee, and was made of solid steel, and .........

Well, in simple terms, looking at now, going backwards, my house electricity keeps cutting out - has done for six weeks now - on and off - and I tracked it down to one circuit, and that is the kitchen. Without going into a long story, an electrician today tested everything, and the conclusion? My GE fridge's "Insulation resistance is down". I rang the GE representatives, and basically, I need a new compressor. Cost of compressor? Around $650. Cost to put it in, including call out fee etc? Around $300. Total cost? Around $950.

So should I fix it or get a new fridge, and if so,which brand?

Well, over the years, my GE TFG20JAX GE Side by Side refrigerator, has required new door seals (expensive) and new thermostat (expensive), and new plastic rails that the vegetable 'bin' slides on (hugely expensive, and they sent the wrong kind the first time), and the in-door butter and cheese shelf lifting door won't accommodate a 500 Gm tub or margarine or butter, and ............................

Do all fridges break down? Sure, although one hopes it's a VERY long time between drinks. Are call out fees for fridge mechanics too high? Gosh yes - wish I got paid that - but I guess it's the same these days for most things. But this fridge cost over $2,500 because it was top shelf in quality. Well I for one haven't found that.

Most importantly - would I buy another GE? Nope. And that's sad.

Love to hear other's opinions, but for me, GE will not cut it again.

So what SHOULD I buy? What do you think? Semi single pensioner with not a lot of money to spend, but wants something to last as long as he will :-)

Oh, by the way, IF, if, the problem turns out NOT to be the compressor, but something a lot cheaper, I will probably keep this fridge, and will keep you posted. Keep warm everyone - well I guess unless you live in Darwin or Broome, in which case keep cool :-) :-D

OK, sorry about the delay. Well I am very happy to report it wasn't the compressor, it was the HEATING ELEMENT that heats the fridge up when it's doing its automatic defrosts. The elements cost much less than the compressor, but still many hundreds of dollars, However the lovely GE repair man said my fridge should now last me another decade at least. So can I please increase my rating to three stars.

12 years of uninterrupted refrigeration- not a days problem – I purchased a new GE 627L side by side frost free refrigerator 12 years ago. I have not had a single days problem with it with it ever since. It is only now starting to rattle a little bit so I am preparing to replace it. I won;t go past GE. As far as I'm concerned they have proven their worth. I think i paid a little more for it at the time, higher than mid range$$$. But I wanted quality and I got it. I also had to have a side by side because of limited space in my kitchen and that has proven to be a good system as well. It's a white fridge, I'll go for stainless next time. Purely because it marks a bit.
