Have had for over10 years a Hoover 500MB (almost identical to the MD series). It has needed only 2 repairs in that time. One was a motor capacitor failure, whose symptoms are gradual failure to turn and reverse during the wash cycle, and more recently a timer motor failure. The capacitor is a generic component freely available for many machines of… Read more

all kinds, and the main control board is/was still available on-line from Wayne's Wholesale Spares, whose service and communication is extraordinarily good, and at the best price I could find. My previous washing machine was also a Hoover, also over 10 years old and running perfectly. It was just too big for my needs. I commend Hoover on their build quality and the long term availability of spares, even when the spare is a salvaged unit.

Awesome washer – Ive had my 550MB machine since 1997 and it’s been incredible. A sturdy machine that always washes well, from heavy duty or delicates. Over the last few years the dials are not working as well as they did but it still gets the job done. Made in Australia with a steel drum, lint catcher, and all the features you need for a basic wash. Just awesome.… Read more

This is my second Hoover, the first I purchased new in 1973 when I first started flatting. It finally died after 24 years of faithful service, cloth nappies, work clothes and street wear. What a great product, that’s two Hoover machines over 50 years. You can’t get a better recommendation than that!

Still going after 16 years – Given we do at least 10 wash cycles a week, I imagine it's done about 8,000 since purchase (we bought it second hand). The knobs broke years ago, so it's stuck on large, cold wash. But it's still working and washing. Pretty good for a second hand purchase. Show details

Still going strong! – This machine has toured with me ever since my early days of share house living. It is indeed a workhorse, does what it needs to brilliantly! I just came here wondering how old the thing is, I'm very impressed!

Great! – I don't know if this model code covers the model I owned but here goes... I bought an 8kg Hoover top loader for the family in 1995! Apart from a couple of episodes (when an accidental flood from the waste tube caused the machine's feet to loosen...whereupon it danced out of the laundry during spin cycle!) we NEVER had trouble with it. built with the "balanced orbital suspension". This machine took everything thrown at it with ease! Sadly the machine developed terrible noises last month and failed for the first time ever. I reluctantly had to retire it as the service guy told me the gearbox had finally given up the ghost.

I wanted to buy a new machine of the same type...nope! None are made here anymore and I could only find a front-loading machine with the Hoover brand on it...made overseas by Electrolux. I consider myself lucky to have owned one of the last Aussie-made Hoovers which was quiet, powerful and built tough. 1995 to 2018 is one heck of a record. Bless the Aussie designers of "Balanced Orbital Suspension".

Never Missed a Beat – I've had this machine since 2005 and it has been a perfect little goer. I moved house and a weight on the lid upset the pressure arm that activates everything so for the last two years I've sat a brick on it when washing and it still chugs away like old faithful.  Show details

Hoover 500MD – Purchase this machine around ten years ago, never missed a beat, Good reliable product, always gets the job done. Time to move on, hope the next machine proves as reliable.

Can not kill this thing! – We bought this machine about 10 years ago. It washes stains and dirt out but replaces it with lint, it is not gentle on clothes either. I am promised a new machine when this one dies but I think it will out live me! Have not had a problem with it other then the constant lint issue. Work horse machine Lint lint and more lint

Great basic washing machine – When buying a washing machine, don't ever buy a cheap brand!  The type of washing machine you get really does affect wear and tear on your clothes and towels etc.  Always get a reputable brand, like Hoover.  I've had this model for a couple of years now and have never had a problem with it.   I've never had clothes ripped or torn, or lint… Read more

spreading through the wash like I have had previously with a cheap machine.  The Hoover 500MD has a simple, clean design with easy to use controls.   There are three independent controls, one for wash temperature, one for water fill level, and the main knob for wash function.  It has a 5kg capacity which suits singles and couples just fine.  It has the agitator in the middle with a fabric softener well on top if you use it.  The lint filter is easy to get out and clean.  I have a bad habit of trying to squish as many clothes in as possible to avoid doing two loads, and it has always worked out fine.  You can adjust the fill level to 'max' to cover just about as much as you can fit into the machine.  Overall this is a great basic machine that performs well every time, and is gentle on your clothes. Good performance, simple controls, clean design. Nothing really.

Excellent – I bought the The Hoover 500MD second hand after we dowensized and I had to sell my fantastic 16 kilo washer because it would not fit the tiny space available in my new laundry. I was amazed by oit's performance from day one and I have been using it to do several loads a week for five months now and I've honestly never in forty five years of… Read more ·  1

machine washing clothes had a washing machine that cleans as well and never damages my clothes. It has handled the most soiled heavy work wear through to delicates that shoule really have been hand washed and I even dies T shits in it and every time i have had an even result. Getting an even all over de result is not easy, many machines leave things looking patchy, so that was a good test for the water adjtation and circulation. Everything you need in a compact washing machine. None, I LOVE it.

OK – Was adequate for a small family, washed quite well and only took 30 minutes for a normal cycle. I am now looking for a washer that is going to last, do they exist? It fitted nicely into the space we had in the laundry. It also has a metal lid. Its noisy, it moves about and for a washer which is only 7 years old, we have gone through 2 cycle select dials. Each switch costing $220 fitted, this soon adds up.
