Purchase the Bosch series 8; 9 kg washing machine front loader sale price for $1200 Harvey Norman NSW This is now my second washing machine… Read more

purchase. The first one was a Fisher & Paykel front loader that was purchased in 2014 which we used twice daily, and only recently the bearings started go & wasn’t spinning fast enough to remove excess water out. This was the only reason why we had made this purchase.

We followed the Sales Rep advice at Harvey Norman and went for the German made Bosch. We were told you can’t got wrong with German made. The quality & craftsmanship is always top tier, and anything German made is made to last! I also told him my previous machine purchased from there also served us well for 12yrs!

On closer inspection once it was home I soon came to realise that it wasn’t up to the same quality as the Fisher and Paykel sadly !

I felt that Bosch could have had a really good quality machine for the price it was charging with the same features the competitors were offering !!

The program dial functions are extremely hard to read as they do not light up with the silver backing plate and the thin black writing makes it very hard to read. I have to get my phone out & use the torch & squat to make sure it’s the correct wash cycle I’ve chosen . In the showroom with all the lighting there you don’t notice it until you get home in your laundry with your single light bulb :(

The detergent drawer doesn’t close fully the bottom right hand side lifts up a bit. I have taken my drawer back into the store to see whether it’s a fault with my mine only. It looks like it’s a fault with that series because the display model at Harvey Norman also doesn’t close flush & pops out a bit too! The plastic does feel very cheap & light. Not sturdy

For a machine that’s over $1200 & German made you shouldn’t expect this at all ! I asked the sales rep to let the Bosch Rep know of this fault. I’m yet to be contacted by anyone, but could be early days yet.

The rubber lining inside the drum seal feels thinner than my previous machine. Water does not fully expel from the inner seal, which when it’s spinning the clothes should remove all traces of water too. I have to dry off the water with a rag so odour doesn’t occur- never had to do that with my previous Fisher & Paykel!

It does have a nice feature ; that it does light up when starting the wash cycle.

So far the wash cycles have been good with no issues. The clothes have been clean. I love this has a 15, 30 & 45 min cycle, like my old F&P - so that’s a bonus ! I haven’t yet used the delayed start, which I used to with my previous machine a lot.

But I feel for the price and for the namesake that it is a German made Bosch machine it feels cheap.

I did walk back around on the shopfront and check out the new Fisher & Pakyel and my regret was instant. I wish I had purchased that instead! It felt a lot more sturdy and it felt like everything was made with the a highest of quality.

I’m sorry Bosch, but I think you’ve dropped the ball with this machine.

Fisher and Paykel can't tell the time. Be aware that every cycle goes for about twice as long as the machine states. In addition, at the end of the… Read more

cycle, you will have to wait another several minutes for the 'child lock' to allow you to access your clothes. So, a 46 minute cycle will take well over an hour. A fifteen minute rinse takes around half an hour. A ten minute spin for a hand wash for instance, becomes at least half an hour before you can access the spun item. If you stop the machine late in the spin cycle, say at seven minutes, NO SPIN at all will have been accomplished, in fact the clothes will feel WETTER. What has it been doing for seven minutes? AND, you will have several minutes to wait before it will unlock the machine, therefore not saving any time. If you dont have all day to get a load of washing done, get another machine. This machine is incredibly infuriating, especially if you are in any form of hurry.

Please keep this review in context, my previous two washing machines were front loaders and I am comparing this top loader against that. Pros:… Read more

Support is based in Australia, they were helpful and got back to me re my questions about things within a day Capacity is correct ( or generously measured ) , my last front loader was rated at 6.5 kg and no way could you fit 6.5 kg of clothes in it

Cons: Machine is very noisy compared to my previous two front loaders Water usage seems a lot higher than the front loader so if you were on tank water I don,t think I could recommend this, please see my water usage which has had a significant jump in the last quarter and there have been no other changes in my lifestyle other than getting a new washing machine. The machine does seem rougher on clothes ( I am using the normal/eco cycle ) and I have had a backing strip of cloth which was placed behind the button holes torn torn out from a set of poly cotton pyjamas Also compared to the front loaders there seems to be far less wash options. What I mean by this is that the front loaders had a setting for nearly every type of clothing whereas this machine has way fewer. Also these machines are fairly pricey, hopefully it will have the reputed build quality and longevity it is supposed to have.

service in 2026 on a 2020 WA8560P1 washing machine that was noisy at high spin speeds. The service technician did not correctly diagnose the cause of the noise and provided an expensive quote for unrelated pump and suspension parts that were not cost-effective to replace, which I declined. Within a couple of weeks of the service call, spin mode stopped completely. By simply removing the agitator, I could easily see that the screws securing the spline drive to the bowl hub had sheared off, evidently failing progressively over time rather than all at once. Upon installing new screws myself, the machine is now working properly again. The $220 service call fee was therefore a waste of money. I tried complaining to F&P but would have incurred another $220 fee for them to look at it again.

But this is worse than poor customer service. This is also clear evidence of planned obsolescence. The bowl hub has provision for 6 screws to secure the spline drive to it. Only 3 screws were installed in the factory, which obviously couldn't handle the forces because they sheared clean off in only 5 years. That wouldn't have happened with 6 screws. Unfortunately since it isn't possible to remove sheared-off metal screw threads from a plastic bowl hub, it therefore isn't possible to install 6 new screws after the failure has occurred, hence the best I could do was install 3 new screws in the alternate holes. I presume that they too will shear off in due course. Naturally the bowl hub is not available as a separate part so the whole bowl will need to be replaced next time at great expense. I wont be looking at F&P products when that day comes.

F&P used to be a good brand when it was a New Zealand company before the Haier China takeover. It's something much less now.

were game enough to wash them a second time they would come out stretched and paper thin, a lot of the time with multiple rips, holes or even shredded from being stretched to the maximum. For the next few months I tried every cycle, using the lowest spin (400) and the lowest temperature - I tried small loads, big loads, medium sized loads but every wash (even the delicate cycle) had the same result. LG garment care factor = NIL. Even though it was still under warranty (6 months old) neither LG customer service or Harvey Norman wanted to know or assist, insinuating user fault. I never received a single call back from LG or Harvey Norman at any time during my dealings with these disgraceful organisations. NEVER again will I have an LG product in my house or step foot in a Harvey Norman store again after being treated so appallingly and spoken down to by the HN department manager when I dare question the delivery/installation procedure as a possibility for damage in transit. I thought it was reasonable to at least look into it because when I requested the installers leave me the travel bolts they said this machine doesn't come with any. The HN dept mgr rejected any such possibility with the reason being that travel bolts can only be used once, they are not reuseable and if I should ever need to move the machine I should just fill up the drum with clothes. Well, that excuse was an insult to my intelligence and should be a huge red flag to the Harvey Norman franchise, and it was the final straw for me. My last contact he promised to phone me back in 20 minutes with an update - that was 5 days ago...... some things just don't change.

This is the response received by whirlpool. “The rust in the unit is usually not covered under the warranty. It occurs due to surrounding moisture and in order to remove the issue of rust, Maintenance and cleanliness of unit is must. Since rust are external issue not a manufacturing defect, we are unable to assist you at the stage. Please keep unit safe and clean in order to avoid further rusting of the unit.” It’s a washing machine that has water going through it at least 4 times a week. And the rust was covered by the front panel. The area has never been under water

Ideal Camping Companion – We looked at these ages ago but thought nope a bucket will do. A friend of ours just bought one and said its the best thing they ever bought for… Read more

camping. So here we are...

Wow, I'm so impressed with the quality of the materials its solid and sturdy and its soooo easy to use!! If im being completely honest though, it will be interesting to see how it is a year from now.

We literally just un-boxed it and 5 mins later using it. I took videos to share BUT had to really cut one down showing it working but couldnt include the spin cycle..which is a shame!!! Another one is of the clothes on the line after to show how much moisture extracted from the spin.

Use: Camping We regularly 2-3 times per year camp on the beach for at least 1 week to 4 weeks at a stretch. This machine for us is a time saver, as we usually have to wait for laundry build-up and then drive 30+ ks on the beach, through Noosaville traffic only to sit at a laundromat...$10 per load, to the drive back hang ect. Now we can do it in camp, we have enough water and power to run it, so we can't wait next week to use it!

Instructions: We found them to very easy and uncomplicated. Owners manual has diagrams as well as written ones with installation, power requirements, advice and tips down to a washing guide for the different clothing types and corresponding recommended cycle to set for them.

For our first load, we washed 4 heavier types of clothing with light soiling to see how it went and we are very happy. The spin cycle is very smooth and there's no soggy clothes as you can spin it out as many times as you need!

We hooked it up to the normal garden hose at home, and it worked perfectly or you can bucket water in if that's all you have. We have a camp trailer so we can hook it up to using the shower fittings we already have. #winning

It tells you everything from the water level, lint cleaning to what sort of detergent to use. READ the instructions... honestly they couldn't have made it any simpler to follow!

ITS A KEEPER...thanks Black Friday Sales :)

Con: I don't think this is for us, but for heavey items like jeans and beach towels 1 or 2 items per load as it's not built for really heavey loads.

☆☆This is not for normal everyday family use, as in its enough to get you out of trouble or like for camping. IT DOES WHAT IT IS INTENDED USE IS FOR, it may just take a little longer.

Front loader washing machine with colourful clothes.

Types of washing machines

The most limiting factor to be considered before you begin looking at washing machines is the available space in your home. If your home has one designated spot for a washing machine, you will need to choose a machine that will fit that space.

Having several possible locations will open up your buying options, but it is still important to know the measurements of each space (don’t forget to leave a gap for pipes at the back, and room for the door to open at either the front or top!).

Once your space is figured out, the next factor to consider is the capacity you require, which depends on how much & how often you wash. Machines range in size from 5kgs to 10kgs, with a 7kg capacity machine being generally considered adequate for a four-person household. Having a rough budget estimate will also help you narrow down your decision.

Here is a brief summary of the different types of washing machines:

TypeMain FeaturesBest ForAverage Prices
Top loadersTypically available in larger capacities, they also have faster washing times than front-loading machines, and can be opened during wash cycle.Large, no-fuss laundry loads$500-$700
Front loadersTend to be more energy efficient and use less water. They are also quieter and have higher spin speeds than top-loading machines. A dryer can be stacked on top, if space allows.More control over special clothing types in a compact space$600-$800
Washer/dryer combosWash and dry your laundry in a single machine! Perfect for those with very limited space and frequent rainy weather.Anyone in a small apartment who doesn’t mind splashing out$1200+
*Pricing guides are based on a 7kg capacity washing machine

Top loading washing machines · See all

top loading washing machine

Top-loading machines clean clothes either with an agitator or an impeller. The agitator is the design most people are familiar with; it consists of a tube or pole that twists up through the middle of the machine.

In contrast, an impeller has low ridges that rotate on the floor of the machine to create turbulence and clean clothes. Both types remove dirt quickly, but are rougher on clothes than a front-loading machine. A model with an impeller offers maximum capacity, but is more likely to tangle clothes, and will cost more in electricity and water to run.

One advantage top-loading machines have over their front-loading cousins is the ability to open the machine after the wash cycle has begun.

This allows you to add last-minute clothes, or retrieve a forgotten phone from a pocket - something not possible in a front-loader, which needs to drain all water before it can be opened.

Large top-loading washing machines can have deep drums, so while you’re inspecting machines at a retailer it’s worth opening the machine to make sure you can reach all areas inside the drum. If you prefer standing instead of crouching when loading and unloading your washing, a top-loader is probably a better fit for you.

Pros
Typically found at a cheaper purchase price than equivalently-sized front-loaders.
Shorter wash cycles than front-loading machines (15-40 minutes, compared to 1.5-2 hours).
Items can be added or removed at any point during the wash cycle.
They can be loaded and unloaded while standing upright.
Cons
Uses more energy and water than a front-loading machine (of equivalent size), which means higher running costs.
They tend to be rougher on clothes, and models with an impeller are more likely to tangle clothes.
They use more detergent than front loaders, which will further increase running costs.

Front loading washing machines · See all

front loading washing machine

Front-loading washing machines have two big attractions; energy efficiency, and their space-saving design. With front-loading machines, you’ll also find that even entry-level units come with a variety of features or wash programs.

The reason for front-loading machines being considered more energy efficient than top-loaders is due to the differences in the way the two soak, agitate, and rinse clothes in water.

A top-loading machine fills with a pre-selected amount of water, and washes using a vertical spin action while pumping water in and out. Front-loaders spin their drum horizontally, tumbling the clothes over and using gravity to effectively distribute water and detergent throughout the load.

Modern front-loading machines use sensors to determine the appropriate amount of water to use for each wash, and they are able to be packed much fuller than an equivalently sized top-loader.

Pros
Being able to fit under a bench or have a dryer stack on top makes these machines ideal for those with limited space.
More efficient use of energy, water and detergent compared with a top-loading machine.
Generally have faster spin speeds than top-loading machines (which makes drying easier too!).
They’re gentle on clothes, so your garments will last longer.
Cons
They can have a high initial purchase price.
The door is low to the ground, which makes the design unsuitable for those uncomfortable with having to bend down to fill or empty the machine.
Wash cycles can typically take around 2 hours to complete (although many models come with a ‘Quick Wash’ setting for getting through smaller loads in a hurry).
The higher spin speed may also mean noisier spin cycles, although this will vary by manufacturer and model.

Washer/dryer combos · See all

samsung washer and dryer

If you have very limited space, or are attracted by the all-in-one, “set and forget” style, then a combined washer and dryer could be the solution you’re looking for!

However, be aware that the machine’s drying capacity is always less than its washing capacity, so if you want your washing completed in one go you’ll have to adjust your load accordingly. It’s also worth noting that combo machines are only available in the front-loading design.

Pros
Super convenient! There’s no need to transfer clothes from the washer to a dryer.
Significant space saving - this one machine can find in a pantry or under a bench.
Most models don’t require outlet installation, and can be drained into a nearby sink.
You’ll be sacrificing capacity unless you’re willing to spend upwards of $1600 on a big model.
Cons
Very long wash and dry cycle length - from 3 to 6 hours.
They are typically cited as being less reliable, having the pitfalls of both a dryer and a washer.
They can have poor energy and water efficiency, although this is improving with newer models.

Features to look for

If you’ve decided which type of washing machine fits your needs best, you can start to look at the extras and features that can turn a good choice into a great choice, and make a great machine indispensable.

Wash settings

If you think your clothes need special care and attention that an ordinary wash program can’t provide, look for a model that provides unique settings. A good machine will have you covered whether you need to get dirt out of sports gear, or want to use a ‘Handwash’ mode for delicate items; with some models even letting you program and save your own custom wash setting.

Drum material

washing machine drum

The washing drum or tub will take a lot of wear and tear, so it’s important that it is durable enough to last the lifetime of your machine.

Higher quality washing machines will have a stainless steel drum, while entry level machines may have drums made of porcelain or reinforced plastic. Porcelain drums may chip over time, while plastic drums are very durable, although neither are as gentle on clothes as stainless steel.

Automatic water level sensors

This feature is the key to ensuring your machine is as water-efficient as possible by detecting the washing load size and adjusting the water level to suit it. Assuming you keep this machine for 8-10 years, an efficient machine could bring you substantial savings, which offsets your initial outlay.

Anti-crease setting

If you iron a lot, this feature can help reduce the time you spend getting those wrinkles out. Various models will achieve this in different ways; some through steam, others through altering the rinse and spin cycles.

Stabilising features

Washing machines can vibrate a lot during their spin cycle, with front loading machines being more susceptible to vibration. Adjustable legs are one way to keep the unit steady, as long as they are correctly installed when setting up. Some top-loading machines will automatically adjust an unbalanced load mid-cycle, by either alternating the spin speed, or adding more water.

Adjustable spin speed

Spin speeds typically range from 1000-1600 rpm, with higher speeds reducing drying time, but resulting in stiffer, more wrinkle-prone clothes. Being able to manually select the correct spin speed can help your clothes last longer, and can make ironing easier, along with saving power.

Washing machine control panel

Controls & display

When exploring washing machines at a retail store, make sure you can easily read and adjust the controls, and that these controls logically make sense. The last thing you would want is to receive a machine and wonder why there are 25 different buttons on it. These buttons also need to be responsive, and sturdy enough to last the life of the machine.

Ease of installation

It’s worth looking at whether or not you’ll be able to install the washing machine yourself, or if you will need assistance. Some retailers and manufacturers will include the cost of installation in their pricing. Make sure you can fit the machine through all doorways, and if the machine will be installed above ground floor, make sure it is well supported underneath.

The bottom line

You want a washing machine that you will be happy to use for the next 10 years, so spending a bit of extra time researching and choosing the right model for you is well worthwhile. Don’t forget to keep the dimensions of your allotted space on hand, as not all machines of the same capacity are the same size!

Before making your purchase, take a moment to scroll up, and read genuine opinions from other Australians on what they love (or hate) about their own washing machines.

Most reviews discuss capacity, wash speed and noise level, with many also covering extra details, such as the usefulness of wash programs, or how often they may need repairs.
