Brilliant service for 8 years, cartridges too expensive – Printer has given great service for over 8 years now. Switched on this morning, nothing. Tried to troubleshoot but dead. Worse thing is I just bought $61.00 of replacement cartridges. Will buy another, not worth repairing. Isn't everything built in China now? Show details

Faulty Product – The product is designed to fail - specifically the print head as mentioned in previous products. I will no buy a HP product again - after contacting HP support they advised my to buy another print head. If you look it up there is actually a class action lawsuit in the USA related to this exact fault.  Show details

Served me well for over 6 years – Print quality in normal print mode on par with most mid priced lasers, with the advantage of being significantly cheaper. InBest quality mode, using 100gsm bright white paper the print quality is excellent, well balanced colours in infographics, sharp clean looks very good. Fax is fine, used every day, touch screen needs a gentle prod to activate,… Read more

scans well, although its essential the document is loaded absolutly square in the feeder, otherwise multiple pages are pulled through. Not brilliant for photo's, my view is if you want good quailty phots buy a photgraph printer, dont expect the office workhorse to produce them. I purchased this printer from Officeworks Noosa in April 2012, is over 6yrs old, in which time I have printed over 52,000 copies, majority colour. Best place for refills is online, I complete the order cart on line, screen print then pop along to Office Works for a price match.

Very please with it, rarley jams, only if I have not 'fanned' the paper in the tray, does not like cheap paper, prefers premium brand Australia paper, the results speak for themselves. I am at a loss now as I need an A3 printer, and I dont seem to be able to find a replacement that has the same features as this one as well as the capacity to print A3 colour.

Excellent printed, yes I would buy another, although now discontinued, these printers will become an excellent second hand buy, as they appear to be totaly reliable.

Unfortunately all too common crappy HP printer – The concept for the printer is great. A nice all-in-one for light-office usage. The print quality is good, photos average. Inks cartridges are quite large and not too expensive per page if bought online (genuine HP). I first had the previous version 8600. It had a print head issue ramdonly occur, I turned if off and on and it was OK for a few… Read more

times. then it wouldn't go away. This was out 10 months from new so I got a new one under warranty (12month warranty). The new one did the same thing but at 14 months. Both of these previous model always had the WiFi disconnect issue where you can to turn the printer on/off as it loses connection after a day or two. (FWIW HP was sued in USA for issues on this printer). I heard HP had learned from this and stupidly bought the 6910 model. It solved the WiFi disconnect issue (90% of the time it works). However the Win10 driver has never worked on one of my computers via wifi (wizard won't connect, HP install software doesn't install driver, etc etc - and HP doesn't provide a *.inf driver for me to do it manually). Not too bad as it works from 2 other computers. It still gets the occasional print head error which I'm sure means it will fail soon enough.

Great if want to replace your printer every year – Was great for the 1st 12 months. Replaced the cartridges yesterday with new HP brand ones and nothing. Says I need to replace the print head. When the cartridges cost $189 and now the print head doesn't work you can imagine how unimpressed I am. Money I can't afford to lose but there it goes straight down the drain.  Show details

Great value for money – I was a little surprised to read so many negative reviews on this printer. I have had mine for over 5 years and never had an issue. I have only ever used genuine HP ink (which is a lot more expensive than buying compatible ink). It has only been used for home use but it does get used at least a couple of times a week. photos which are not bad quality but not great either (but this may be the photo paper I am using too). The only negative thing I could say is that when you want to copy/scan something using the top feeder - it almost always jams. So if you want to copy/scan a lot of pages it can be quite tedious; however, I don't use this often and I don't have any issues copying/scanning just lifting up the top to place them on the glass. Considering I originally bought this printer heavily discounted, and even with the cost of the genuine ink I would still buy a HP again.

Horrible printer !!! – I bought this Printer in 2015 and didn’t have problems with it until early last year 2017. even after everything nothing worked. I was oblivious to the fact that HP had sent out an update that barred their printer from working until you use their hp ink products . I tried all the troubleshooting and nothing worked. And then one day it just packed up.... nothing . Went online and found that other customers had the same problems since their so called software update. I have since lost faith in any of the HP products and will never recommend them to anyone ...

Terrible investment, very poor reflection on HP build quality – Printer was initially set up to automatically print random web content every day, largely wasting ink and paper. Soon after I disabled this annoying feature, I found that the printer started printing with white lines, which is a clear indication of print head failure. The problem only got worse, and within weeks the printer was unusable. A… Read more

replacement print head was around $200, which made it more economical to buy a whole new machine (what a waste!). The two-sided scanning feature is good, but most printers do that these days. Wi-fi printing and scanning was super slow, which also took away from this functionality. Overall, I've had a terrible experience with this machine, and will not be buying HP products in the future. It's sad to see what this great company has been producing more recently - I hope their engineering and customer service departments can improve these products, as I remember HP having much better build quality in the past. There's no online form or e-mail address to send customer feedback to - only phone and online chat (that I can't access due to work hours), and a physical address (that I can't use since the printer is broken!).

Ink Hog! – After exhaustive research I found that even when I set the printer on, normal, black text, plain paper, that there was no way to set this as default. The real kicker is after manually… Read more

setting it for only black text each time, it used up all the color ink anyway and the black was 90% full still. It won't let me print anything unless I replace the depleted color cartridges even though all I want is plain old black text print. The cost of the ink is a bit pricey too. Typically ranging from individual cartridges at $35+ or the full set at $90+. Last time I paid $110 with a discount at a retail office supply chain for the full set. I got about 100 black text copies from that set. Even if I was printing just photos out I would have not have gotten much better mileage from the ink cartridges.

Print head failure means its needs disposal – Both my father-in-law and myself have experienced the print head failure which requires a full replacement costing more than printers with the same functionality. Life of the printer was far shorter than I would expect a printer at that price point. Great printer while it was working during its short life span.  Show details

And due to my first amazing experience how could I resist calling back a second and even third time only to have to wait countless hours on the phone and eventually a week for a part to be shipped out to my unusable printers.

But if that isn't enough to sway you into spending $450+ on one of these bad boys, check out a list of things you can do with it:

USE OEM INK" thing. By programming sophisticated software and putting it on the printer to cease the freedom of people using non OEM inks. Firstly as a printer technician, viewing the source code in the printer updates reveals that hp is doing everything to update their chips so old non OEM chips can be ruled out and cannot be used with the printer anymore. It already says that using non genuine inks will result in a cease of warranty but as that is the least of my concerns, hp has been counteracting with my freedom to use non genuine inks. I will be coding a patch to use cartridges without a chip in the future and hopefully help all the other innocent customers from being drawn to use the expensive low quality cartridges. Other printer companies such as Canon and Epson just tries to convince their customers to use OEM inks but don't force them like HP.

There is no doubt that HP would want to remove this post from this page but I am just being honest and they are trying to cover up the truth. I am just clarifying the truth, I promise. James

A versatile and economical printer – I bought the 8600 after owning two previous HP multifunction printers. printed a few reams of paper.

As a bonus, it prints double-sided.

Its printer driver can centre a photo on photo-sized paper - unlike the driver for my previous OfficeJet 4500.

Photo quality is quite good, but probably not as good as that of a printer that is designed specifically for photos. It prints, it scans, it faxes, it connects to the home network, and it's Inexpensive to run. It will run from Windows, Mac and Linux. And you can print remotely. The only problem I have had with it is ghosting when printing double-sided. After discussing the problem over the phone with the HP service person, it seems to have been caused by a combination of a cold room and printing first on the worng side of the paper. The problem has not recurred.

printing extensively. I print from wireless from multiple computers. I scan to my computer direct and by email in pdf form. I have used the e-print facility perhaps 2 times.

The touch screen is passive not active (unlike your mobile phone) - so you just have to push it. Works fine.

The apps function that it comes with is pretty gimmicky - don't use them at all.

Print quality is adequate for my needs. I would like a laser, but I don't want the cost. I've printed to higher quality stock with good success. It's a bit harder in that you have to choose inkjet paper, but once you've worked out what you need you are right to go.

I have used (I think) 3 sets of cartridges. I had a great deal from Harvey Norman where I got the first 3 sets half-price, so printing has been VERY cheap so far.

The one disappointment is that occasionally on a big print run, it picks up more than one page, and prints half on one and half on the other. That stinks! But I think that is a fault with many printers - but HP should try to eliminate this.

Trays are fully covered and large. Quick, wireless, duplex scan and print, two trays, scan to pdf by email, cheap to run Occasional pickup of multiple sheets

plain paper! The printer is mainly used to print fliers. The black was sharp but the driver wouldn't allow the printer to print decent quality on plain paper. It would only allow this on the specialty papers. When we tried to print with the settings set for plain paper the color in comparison was pale and washed out even in the print preview compared to the 11 year old unit it was to replace. I did try the plain paper on a higher setting but it flooded the paper and grabbed 3 sheets for this print.

I tried a print on the high end shiny paper and it was crisp, sharp and bright. The prints when put Side by side both printers supposedly doing 600dpi the color was really disappointing on plain paper with the 8600. We use Corel for this printing and does allow you to tinker with the quality a lot but this still didn't allow it to do a decent job. I did try it in Word and with a PDF and didn't get any better results. I think this would be ok for most stuff but it really fell over with the color quality, driver flexibility and perhaps the ink it uses? I didn't try out anything to do with the fax but the copy option worked fine but with the same issues to do with the printing. Easy to set up, duplex, covered paper tray to keep out dust. (Cyan) leaked, at 4pm when I need to get some printing done, throwing my afternoon completely as I worked through the 'what could be wrong' on the user guide. Once I found out what it was I called Officeworks (where I recently bought it) and they offered to give me a replacement Cyan ink cartridge, which I got the next morning.

After returning to the office and installing the Cyan the next morning, the Yellow ran out.

No problem, you would think, just print in Greyscale. But hey, I only print in Greyscale! Only.

So how did the Yellow run out? I checked the online user help guide. It says you can print when one ink is depleted, but doesn't say how. What? So I called the 'helpline'. Guess what, Yellow is used to print black. There is no way to print black without the Yellow.

At this stage I was fuming (and less than gracious), but decided to cut my losses. I ordered (and paid for additional speed on the courier) Yellow ink. It arrived in under two hours. I installed it. I was then told that 'Magenta' was low. Nice. Could have told me that before I ordered the Yellow, HP.

Yup. 3 pages later the Magenta ran out. It doesn't matter what settings I try, it still will not print while one cartridge is depleted. Too late to get a courier at that time, but I ordered it for the next day.

I haven't printed 2,000 pages. IF it reaches that, I will know why - all of the ink cartridges will be used to get there. The paper counts on the colour cartridges (which retail for over $40 a pop) will be for the same pages that the black ink is counting.

What is printing is good quality, and the double sided feature is great. The scanner works well, as does the copier. But the ink situation is ridiculous. My Canon (which I upgraded from) has been happy printing with black ink only for years.

My next printer? Canon. Great double sided printing. Good at scanning. Misleading product. Cannot print black ink only. Should be warned about it.
