Solving the Maytag lint problem ...we hope !! – We have owned this Maytag for a few years and had the usual problems with lint on (particularly dark) clothes. I read on a web-site somewhere a procedure for cleaning out the machine with Epsom Salts. ( Fill machine with how water only (no clothes), add half box Epsom Salts, run short wash cycle ( it was like 7 minutes) BUT don't let water pump… Read more

out, leave water to stand overnight, next day run complete 'sturdy' cycle and let water pump out. ) This seemed to work. We washed a few loads and NO lint. So then we tried adding Epsom Salts to each wash. We use liquid detergent and add about the same amount ( a cap full) of Epsom. Bingo ! .. no lint anywhere. We then tried 'everything' ...new towels, old towels, mixed with black tracksuit pants etc ... and everytime no lint. So very fastidious "woman of the house" is very happy with results . So ... it's worth a try folks ! Clean out the machine and then just add a 'cap full' of Epsom Salts with every wash. And lint problem solved. Epsom Salts are very cheap and readily available. Good luck with your trust Maytag !!

21st birthday – We purchased our Maytag washing machine 21 years ago. It finally packed it in the other day. I had no hesitation in replacing it with a new Maytag. Never seen a service man in those 21 years. Top class heavy duty machine. They have been extensively by laundromats so that says it all

Excellent machine! Could not do without it – I'm amazed at the bad reviews of Maytag washing machines. We bought ours 28 years ago, and it has never faltered. We chose it because virtually every laundromat in Adelaide then (maybe still today) used Maytags, which meant they were doing vastly more work than other brands. They were real, heavy duty machines with much longer-than-normal… Read more

working lives. They had a great reputation backed by excellent American engineering. The only downside we now regret is the Maytag's water use: 40 gallons (180 litres) per wash for our machine. Water was much cheaper to buy back in our early days of ownership. Not so today. My wife read the adverse experiences on this site, and was scathing about the owners' reports. She said, re the lint problems experienced by many other respondents, that they clearly don't properly sort their materials before washing. She never throws mixed materials in together. She washes all whitegoods as a batch; and all coloureds as another batch. Woollens, too, go in all together and she says the Maytag does a beautiful job of cleaning them. She said if, for example, a batch of new bath towels were washed together with woollen goods, yes, there would be a lot of lint on the materials at the end of the wash. Separate them, though, and it's a different story. She is always careful not to overload the machine. It is reasonably noisy but our laundry is separate from the house so that's no problem. She now washes mostly twice a week, occasionally three times. For the first eight years or so, while our family was together, she washed every second day. The machine is still going strong, and we've never had the need for a serviceman. We suspect that with most other brands, three or perhaps four machines would be needed over a 30-year period. We have fingers crossed our Maytag continues working well for another few years. We have never regretted our purchase, and we'll have no hesitation in buying another Maytag when this one gives up.

Biggest waste of money ever – What more can I add - lint lint lint - soap residue on all clothes especially dark colours. My son's work shirts are no longer black, but a faded grey colour. I wish I had read these reviews way back when I purchased it 4 years ago. Comforting to know I am not the only person duped into buying what I thought was a superior brand. Oh if only… Read more

I had my Simpson washing machine all over again. It lasted me almost 20 years and had a lint filter. This Maytag has always been noisy too. As soon as I get a bit of money, I am buying another brand of washing machine and will research well beforehand. This Maytag will go on kerbside cleanup. Sturdy construction - looks impressive - large and easy to use controls, esp if you have arthritis NO lint filter and noisy. Dark colours fade quickly and washing powder residue always remains on clothes.

This washing machine ruins your clothes – When it came to getting a new washing machine all the Store sales reps recommended a Maytag. So I outlaid a considerable amount of money to buy what I was lead to believe was the best washing machine on the market. Have had it now for 4 years and can't wait for the day I can afford to get rid of it. Washing clothes isn't much fun but its… Read more

excruciating with a Maytag. It puts lint all over the clothes, is too hard on the fabrics and it doesn't wring the clothes very well leaving them very damp. It has ruined my husband's king-gee work clothes and anything black is just destroyed. Only getting 1 season out of alot of our clothing. Maytag's help line told me that the machine is not designed for domestic use as its a commercial machine & to try washing clothes on a gentle cycle with little detergent. I did question why these are marketed as domestic machines. No answer. I haven't had to get it serviced yet. Not designed for domestic use. Ruins clothes, too hard on fabric, puts lint all over clothes, ruins anything black. Doesn't wring clothes properly leaving them damp. Expensive and doesn't deliver.

Chiming out – Bought this model early in 2005 with a 5 year waranty and actually went the 5 years with no problems, apart from the frequently commented upon poor (non existent) lint filtering. But in April 2010, shortly after the warranty ran out, the machine failed. The problem turned out to be burnt out resistors on the Chime Board, Part no 22004291. A local… Read more

(Sydney) appliance repairer supplied and fitted a replacement board, but it took 2 visits, a diagnotic visit to identify the problem and a delay of 10 days for the part to be shipped from Maytags Australian representative (Whirpool Appliances. Total cost was $260.70.

No further dramas until New Years Day 2011, which the machine celebrated by coming to a dead stop in the middle of the wash cycle. Called the same appliance service who sent their man out promptly, to find it was burnt out resistors on the Chime board. As that was covered by the repairer's 12 month warranty, the serviceman closed up the machine and said he'd be back as soon as the part came in. A week later their manager rang, very apologetic that Whirlpool parts centre advised that they were unable to supply the part at this time.

I called Whirlpool myself to be told that hopefully they would be able to supply the part by the end of March. When I indicated, somewhat tersely, that being without a washing machine for 3 months was not acceptable, I was passed to their Customer Service center who expressed their deepest concern and appointed a Case Manager to address my problem. I received one email from her, assuring that they would do all that they could to expedite a solution. The lady was never heard from again.

Searching the web, I found a parts supplier in Canberrra with the part in stock. They mailed it to me promptly for a total cost of $65 approx

My friendly appliance service, who have been most cooperative and with whom I have no complaints, then sent their serviceman who installed the board and replaced the fuse at a cost $128.90, so on 20/1/11 we had a working washing machine again.

Oh Joy, oh bliss, oh rapture! But it was short lived. On April 26, as we were preparing to leave for a Queensland holiday, the machine stopped in the middle of the wash cycle. As we were leaving the next day I just siphoned the water out of the machine and left it disconnected.

But having a fair idea of what the problem was, while away I contacted the Canberra parts supplier again and ordered another Chime board to be mailed in time for our return home. The cost this time was $73

On return home the Chime board was waiting, so called the appliance repair people who sent their man out within 2 days. He opened up the machine an guess what? Yep, the Chime bard had burnt out resistors. So 5 mins and $125 later the machine was working again

But the only reason I had it repaired was to give us time to research fully for a replacement machine. So the next time the Chime board fails, however long or short hat may be, I'll be straight out to buy the replacement. And it won't be a Maytag Solid construction, reputedly a long life commercial quality machine, simple operation and controls High price not matched by performance, Too expensive to maintain, Poor customer service

Terrible – I must say the machine has given good service till now. As a typical aussie bloke who does his fair share of the washin, I never really worried about lint in the clothes. However on seeing the filter in the drier after having to use it in wet weather I saw how much [censored word removed] came off the clothes. The machine did cost me $1400.00… Read more

(AUS) in 2006/07 and the salesperson did say it was the best machine on the market. After reading all the different reviews I am now a little hesitant to buy another one if the repairs become to costly. I am replacing the chime board as I have noticed two resistors have over heated and one is loose in the curcuit board. Probably a dry joint at manufacture. I hope this solves my immediate problems. I am concerned that the washer dial may be involved, but I will repalce thie chime board first. If anyone else has faced this problem, perhaps you could put a review on for my information. Anyway @#$% happens! The machine looks good. It has given good service till now. Lint has been an issue. I have noticed at times when hanging clothing out that it does not appear as clean as it could. Yes I am aware of laundry liquid amounts and and pre wash spray, but my MALLEYs did do a better job and it was a dinosaur. Noise of the machine is not an issue. Lint not good, why was there not a filter put in the thing. Automatic lint removal, sounds to good to be true. Yep to good to be true. Had one but the wheels fell off!

Terrible – About 5 years ago, having had it with F&P's, I decided to spend big on our growing family and get something that I thought would last at least 10 years. I was given positive feedback from friends and others about these machines being good performers and would last a lifetime. Yeah! How wrong was I. and attempts to get this monster to do a residue/lintless wash was to no avail. All that I wanted was another machine. Unfortunately, I had to wait until yesterday for this monster to die. A time of celebration! Customer Service: bad Performance: bad These machine are really hard on clothing as well. Don't expect to get long life from your clothes. Warning: do not buy one of these machines! Only that Maytag and Winnings managed to get $1400 out of my wallet! This only got one star because I couldn't subit without one. Sorry to sound so negative, but this is just a little warning. One of the worst washing machines I have ever had. LINT, LINT and MORE LINT - not to mention the continual problems with residue left all over the clothing. Customer Service had suggestions about using only liqid powder. It didn't work. They suggested using Gentle & Delicate. Still didn't wash properly.

Terrible – Why would you buy something that has no lint filter (except the clothes themselves) Also to be told that you are the stupid one! you should only wash clothes on the gentle cycle! Terrible – I was tired of repairing a F&P top loader (repairs started in the first month), so I lashed out on the BIG, EXPENSIVE, AMERICAN. What a mistake. BIG AMERICAN if I needed to select gentle wash for a big heavy wash. No reply. I took her advice nevertheless, and we are still very, very dissatisfied. We have been putting up with this piece of scrap for three years and it disheartens me paying $1300 for a washing machine that doesn't do what it's meant to do. Next time my wife tells me to bring home a washing machine, I won't be asking a man! Good looks, smart easy to use controls, expensive, American. The man at the shop recommended it Just about everything it is supposed to do.Lint over everything and powder residue left on clothes - especially synthetics/cotton. And I should have known, the man at the shop has never used a washing machine!!

Bad – When my last washing machine died from over use. We went looking for a new machine I know people with Maytag machines and they all rave about them so we looked around found this machine. manufacturers help line and was told that this particular model was a commerical machine and that the settings on the right side of the dial were too strong for domestic use and to use the settings on the left side of the dial. Her solution to get rid of the lint that had already built up was to fill the machine with hot water add 2 cups of epson salts and soak it over night, then let it run through a full cycle with no clothes in it. Now after 2 and a half years it decided to stop working after it filled with water thank god I purchased the extended warranty as it turns out the motor and timer were completely stuffed & I had to wait 5 weeks as the parts had to come from America. I have another 2.5yrs left on my warranty thats the only good thing I can think of. I would strongly discourage any one from buying a Maytag I want my 5.5kg Simpson Gemini back. We had that machine for 10years and never had a problem. It just goes to show pay 3 times as much for a machine & get 3 times more problems... ? I can't really think of any. I have not been happy with this machine since I bought it. Its not quiet, its very loud. Its selfcleaning lint system does not work.

fit in the machine Absolute waste of money. Lint all over clothes. If you use washing powder you find soap residue all over clothes, best to use liquid. Fabric softener not distributed in rinse water therefore staining clothes. Uses 150 lites of water and does not wash or rinse clothes well. Extremely noisy. Timer needed to be replaced within 12 months. Clothes have faded and have been damaged.

Terrible – if you really hate someone, advise them to purchase a maytag washing machine. Rating poor for this machine is not enough, i wish it was possible to rate it below one. A message to maytag, it is known that when a customer has receive good experience from a product, he will tell 2 of his friends however if he receives a bad experience he will tell 10 other people about it. $1300 down the drain

Excellent – I was aware that many people had written very negative reviews about this machine and Maytag in general. After some more checking I reached the conclusion that perhaps these complaints… Read more

were largely due to the fact that the Maytag washers are not like most of the modern top loaders on the market. For instance, they have a powerful agitator and when washing clothes, care must be taken with buttons and zips done up and straps tied together in order to prevent tearing. The machine is large and it is tempting to overload which is natural enough but it does play havoc with the lint filter if there is not sufficient water above the clothes. As explained to me by Maytag's technical people, these machines have an automatic lint flush system which is designed to be flushed out with the rinse water, but for it to work correctly there must be sufficient water level ABOVE the clothes so the lint is not drawn back through the clothes themselves. The machine does produce more noise which is not unexpected due to the general solid nature and power of the motor. Excessive vibration can be a problem but is usually fixed if the machine is stopped and the items inside are redistributed more evenly around the agitator. A bit of extra care when loading may be necessary. We have our Maytag sitting under the house on a concrete slab where it is doing a great job. Hopefully it will give many years of service. I think that choosing major appliances should suit your lifestyle and situation. Maybe if you are in a small home or an apartment you might prefer a smaller quieter machine. I wanted a workhorse that could cope with being out in the open. Reputation of product - promised long life, quality of components, large size Repairs can be expensive but hopefully won't happen too often

I, like one of the other reviewers, was foolish enough to buy this machine without prior research (..I thought Maytag was a good brand, so that was good enough for me..) The damn thing has almost ruined all of our clothing!! .. At first I thought it was me - ie that I had not cleaned out the lint filter or something - turns out there is NO lint filter, and even groovy lint buster home remedies (such as adding vinegar to your wash) DO NOT WORK... all that happens is you are fluffy and (now) smell strange... Terrible – Read all these reviews as we could not believe that others are saying exactly what has happened to us. Maytag Atlantis machine is a dud. Save your money and spend it elsewhere. front loaders (OTHER BRANDS) are bringing in quick cycles as well. We modified our laundry to fit this beast in after we had our trusty Westinghouse for at least 25 years (miss it terribly). After the first few washes we contacted Maytag and told them exactly the same things as many have said before us here on this website as we’ve now discovered. LINT and SOAP STAINS - E V E R Y W H E R E, especially dark clothing. We were told by them to change detergent, use less, and fill the bowl every month or 2 with just water and epsom salts, wash and rinse. What a joke – it was brand new and it guzzles water (160 litres or so) just on the normal cycle let alone adding the extra rinse and then doing this every so often – “Very practical Maytag.” Never had to do this with our 25 yr old Westinghouse. We did what they said and used less soap powder and changed it to no avail. We contacted them again and the only option after having this machine for several months was to upgrade to their $2,000+ front loader. NO THANKS Maytag, we wouldn’t risk another cent with you. What was the guarantee that it was going to be any better!!!! We wish we had taken up Kleenmaids offer then of trying their machine for 6 months and if not happy return it. We’ve had it 2 years and are already looking for a new machine. My wife is going to buy a new wardrobe to replace the clothing that has faded and just simply been ruined. As others have said, you think spending big ($1,700) is going to get you good quality but all it gets you is big headaches and water bills. The machine is built to wash army clothes as it pulverises soft light clothing. They come out feeling like they’ve been starched. We are now looking at Asko (Swedish) & Miele (German) front loaders. Use app 55 litres but not as big a wash capacity. If only Westinghouse were making washing machines like our old one we’d have no hesitation buying one but we are not finding them anywhere in the shops. PS our Westinghouse fridge is going fine after probably 30 years. Luck had to run out somewhere as it did with this Maytag Atlantis. Advice is DO NOT GO NEAR it as it is a lemon and Maytag’s comeback is less than satisfactory. Couldn’t be bothered going to the Small (should be big) Claims Tribunal – the old Department of Fair Trading. Now have to figure out how to get rid of it. It’s probably worth more in scrap metal value than as a washing machine. Bye bye Maytag never to see us again. We are doing our research on-line to see what if any reviews are out there to warn us ‘in advance this time’ about the new machines we are looking at. Pitty Choice do not do reviews on all machines – they weren’t too much help. Carolyn & Bill Wollongong.

searching the rubbish dump to find the old machine, even in its death throe it did a better job than the Maytag after 12 months.
