Follow-up  · The 2nd extension price, which was more than three times the first extension price was justified by the customer service rep as being what their computer algorithms fixes for that day. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly ... we took out this insurance many times but for the first time had to make use of it for a broken ankle overseas. The Good: First call to provider was promptly answered, there were follow-up calls/emails by the team,… Read more

and hospital stay, operation etc. were eventually fully covered. The Bad: Right from the outset there was a sceptical/warning undertone from the lady who answered the call that there might be a chance that medical cost would not be covered - not reassuring when someone is in hospital with a leg broken in three places ! Confirmation of cost coverage came through a week after discharge from hospital, two weeks after the accident ! It is known that they need to obtain medical reports, having them translated, assessed etc. but 2 weeks ? Not reassuring either being held in limbo whether one has to face costs if case had not been approved. Also, no help was provided for extra travel arrangements. It was solely up to us to contact airlines, airports etc to organise wheelchair transport and seating arrangements. The Ugly: we were offered to lodge an extra claim for additional expenses (medication, extra travel arrangements etc.). Since then we've been given nothing but a run around. Every communication sent takes 2-3 weeks to be answered, by a different case worker and with a request for additional documents, many of them that were already submitted when making the claim. Is there no standard procedure or structure involved ? Why not ask for ALL required documents right at the start of the claim ? Why this piecemeal request of documentation ? The whole comedy is going on for more than 2 moths now, and no end in sight. One is left asking whether it's lack of knowledge or skills or just a nefarious delaying tactic to make claimants give up or eventually settle with a lesser amount than entitled to. Definitely not recommending this insurance!

Follow-up  · Below are answers to "top follow up questions" by readers: How was the initial payment handled? No payment received as of yet. Still the ongoing travesty with more documents and more documents requested every 2-3 weeks. Absolute radio silence now since submission of last documents ... What was the total claim value? Lower 5 figure value Did they offer a cash settlement? No settlement offered yet

Deny Defend Depose? – Update: I’ve finally received the claim money without having to refill the paper-based claim form, they simply told me it was their mistake and there was no need to resubmit my claim. I had to be very firm in my communication with them. But the whole experience left me questioning Medibank’s practices. What are they really trying to achieve here?… Read more

If I were elderly or someone with limited comprehension of their policy, would I have ended up filling out a paper-based claim again, only for it to be delayed or denied?

It reminds me of the recent UnitedHealth CEO case—the “deny, defend, and depose” strategy that seems to be the unspoken policy of so many insurance companies.

—— I traveled to Korea for a month last month. Two weeks in, I noticed flat warts developing on my face. A local GP recommended removal to prevent them from spreading, so I had the procedure done.

I submitted a claim to Medibank three weeks ago and received a response today asking for “more information”. But instead of specifying the additional information they need, they simply attached a new claim form—identical to the one I’d already filled out online.

It’s clear to me what they’re trying to do here: making the claims process as difficult as possible. They’re happy to take your money, but getting any back? Good luck.

Having had issues before with Insure and Go we decided this time to switch provider and so pleased we did. We went to North America and I lost my medication in the snow. were immediately upfront and said it was worth lodging a claim. We provided the necessary documentation such as flight tickets, med certificate and letter from a foreign doctor and receipts from chemist. Within under a week Medibank reimbursed us for this. This has given me confidence to know that unlike other insurers who we have used in the past they did not look under every stone to deny out claim. They were indeed upfront with the process, thank you Medibank.

Pleased with the outcome of our claim – We have used Medibank Travel Insurance several times now for both annual multi trip cover and single trips. We have only ever needed to make a claim once, and it was resolved successfully. cancel an Alaska trip (inc. cruise) at the last minute, due to a medical incident associated with a declared pre-existing condition. Due to the very late notice of our cancellation, our cruise incurred a loss of 100 % of the total cost paid and there were other costs associated with flights and accommodations which were only partially refundable.

We submitted an insurance claim for these hefty cancellation costs. The claim process took 4 months and required a significant amount of supporting medical paperwork with several requests to re-supply information already supplied (hampered by not having a consistent point of contact or claim manager), however, we did eventually receive a settlement for the full amount of the cancelled cruise, as well as the other cancellation costs associated with flights and accommodation. They covered the costs for both my husband (who had suffered the medical incident) and myself as the fellow traveller on the cancelled bookings.

Whilst waiting for our claim to be resolved we did see a lot of the negative reviews here and began to worry a bit, but happily our claim was fully honoured and we felt we should share our experience here.

DISGUSTING BEHAVIOUR!!! BUYER BEWARE MEDIBANK PRIVATE TRAVEL INSURANCE team decided to deny our recent claim relating to a cancelled flight. The cancellation of our flight was initiated solely by the airline—a straightforward event that is explicitly covered under their policy wording. The product disclosure statement clearly outlines coverage… Read more

for “trip cancellations caused by the carrier or service provider,” which is precisely the situation we found ourselves in.

The rejection rationale didn’t even make sense. We booked our Bali flight 12months earlier, we encountered an issue that caused 1 extra day accomodation, MEDIBANK PRIVATE INSURANCE decided they are not responsible for this issue - this reeks of opportunistic interpretation designed to avoid a legitimate payout.

We did everything required as policyholders: we booked in good faith, notified their team promptly, and provided all supporting documentation. We actually were told by the Medibank Insurance Support Team at the time of the issue we would be fully covered for the extra day accomodation plus food.

To then be dismissed on the basis of some obscure or reinterpreted clause is unacceptable and deeply unethical. We trusted Medibank to provide peace of mind while travelling, and instead, we’ve been met with obstruction and a blatant disregard - truly disgusting behaviour especially over an amount less than $1,000.

For all would be travellers out there - look ELSEWHERE for your insurance requirements. Medibank Private Insurance cannot be relied upon but will be very happy to accept your money.

MEDIBANK TRAVEL INSURANCE – I purchased travel insurance for my trip to the USA early 2024 for a trip to the USA. As a Type 1 diabetic for over 25 years i always choose to purchase premium products for the "incase" something bad happens to me when i am away. needed medical assistance at a hospital in Los Angeles. When I arrived back from the USA i completed the necessary documentation. Medibank acknowledged and reimbursed my added expenses promptly, but the hospital's medical bills for an unknown reason remain unpaid. (it has taken 9 months and I am still waiting for a Medical Travel Insurance Resolution Officer to take care of this claim)

We are now in December 2024 and a debt collector is now contacting me to pay a bill of over $20,000 USD ($31,000 AUD). The duty of care is appalling and this situation has caused me extreme and unnecessary stress.

When I call the customer service line for an update (over the last 9 months) every agent is shocked, we go through the same process, they "escalate", phone somehow "disconnects" and after hours of waiting on hold, talking to agents i am still at the end of day not even one step closer to having my claim finalized.

The bill (for the past 9 months) is currently being "negotiated" with Covermore however it seems no one internally is actually working to get this bill cleared. It all appears overwhelmingly difficult for everyone, and the quality of communication and reassurance is truly appalling. I cannot even travel back to USA as this bill is not paid for. I would NOT recommend buying Travel Insurance from Medibank. I am now waiting for a "call back" we shall see what happens.

I have called at least 5 times, and have gotten an overseas call center, unfortunately difficult to communicate as English is a second language. Every time they refer to their original letter requesting irrelevant information (which we have responded to). It's incredibly frustrating, I am repeatedly told that they cannot transfer me, and there are no managers or supervisors for me to speak to. So how do I resolve this? What am I supposed to do? Super easy to get this insurance but that is where it ends. I have been a member of Medibank Private for 36 years but I will be transferring my membership to a different fund because this is dodgy. payment but the hospital has not heard from them, 3 days later. Also spoke with their health team who have done nothing, saying they need to speak directly to my wife, who is in intensive care hooked up to numerous medical devices and on oxygen. They too told me they’d call the hospital and get back to me - three days later and I’ve heard nothing. I can see that I’m going to have to manage everything myself including rearranging flights back to Oz. Then no doubt there will be a battle at home seeking reimbursement of our costs which are going to be substantial. Update 2 months later. Still getting the run around from Medibank Travel. Despite saying they would cover the hospital costs 10 weeks later the hospital has not been contacted by MT despite having given MT their estimate of cost whilst my wife was in hospital. The hospital has now sent me the bill for payment, over $22k. I have sent numerous emails to the claims department without any response. Phone calls to customer care are stonewalled with no advice other than to send another email to claims as it’s not policy to give a phone number to customers to phone the claims department. Customer care operator told me claims are delayed due to lack of staff who are also covering the emergency assist phone line!! In frustration I’ve lodged a complaint with Medibank Travel only to receive an auto response saying their complaint process takes 30 days!

I’ve also discovered that MT are just agents for Covermore Insurance. I tried calling them directly but they wouldn’t assist and referred me back to MT.
