Absolutely the best – I was talked into buying a bagless machine a few years ago even though I was sceptical, I reckoned that tipping dust out of a plastic container into a plastic bag for disposal (living in a high rise unit you cant just empty the stuff down the waste chute) would cause clouds of dust and I was right, so I went back to the tried and tested bag system… Read more
and there was a promotion on the Meile so lashed out and got one.
So glad I did as this machine is absolutely fantastic.
It is powerful but has different speeds to suit every situation. It has a series of filters so there is no chance of any escaping dust or smells, but like any cleaner these filters must be changed or cleaned to keep the machine happy. This is easy as each box of bags comes with new filters anyway.
The bags are a little expensive but hold a lot and self seal very well, there is a cheaper model Meile which uses cheaper bags but I reckon the extra money for the dearer machine and bags pays dividends in having a very clean and dust free house.
Another Miele masterpiece – Having had a variety of vacuum cleaners over the years including upright, barrel and even a water bath type unit I decided to purchase a quality barrel cleaner that had efficient dust collection was easy to use on carpeted stairs and had fittings that were unlikely to fall off or disconnect whilst in use. I found a Miele S5 model at a respectable… Read more
price and am more than happy with the unit. It is easy to use, has various vacuum settings, the telescopic tube fits positively and yet is easy to disconnect if you have to use on window frames etc. Best of all the exhaust air from the cleaner does not exit from the end of the barrel rather at an angle from the rear of the unit making it perfect to carry the cleaner up stairs while you clean and enabling you to sit the barrel on its tail without interrupting the exhaust air.
I have now had the unit for 2 1/2 years and it is meeting all my needs. Yes the replacement filter bags are a little dearer than some other brands but they are quality bags and easy to replace. My Vax cleaner is now relegated to the garage, My Rainbow cleaner is now relegated to the museum as it is just too heavy to drag around as it fills up with sludge. I hope this is helpful information to those in search of a barrel cleaner.
A nightmare – We needed a new vacuum and my husband went to buy it. When he came home with the most expensive vacuum in the store I was a bit annoyed but he told me the sales person said it was the top of the range and a great machine. Things started going wrong with it within six months. I took it back to thew store and had the telescopic rod replaced. There… Read more
are only two of us in the house and although it isn't a small place, it doesn't get overly dirty.
Now every time I get it out to use it, it overheats. There is nothing stuck in it, as it has been taken apart and checked each time. Because of the power head, the telescopic tube has a coiled power cord running down the inside and invariably gets something caught in it. Very bad design fault. I went back to the shop and they told me a service would cost me a lot of money and it wasn't worth it. We paid over $1200 for this machine and now it is discontinued. No wonder. No service, the machine is good when it works which is rare. Very disappointing and frustrating. I notice Miele doesn't comment on any of these posts, which shows how much they care about their customer satisfaction and service

Already 13 years with me. Its performance and durability are amazing – I purchased it in Hong Kong in 2007 and was never and ever disappointed with its performance. The bundled heads are very handy with purposes built to cover general cleaning. Now living in a house in Australia. It still does the job well for me. The only down side is the power cord length isn't long enough to cover the whole house if you start… Read more
cleaning from one corner to the other corner. Now I started looking for robot type that would do the job of at least another 10 years for me. Miele is likely the candidate with its unbelievable durability.
Performs very well and it is long lasting – My family has had this vacuum for 15 years and it still works and performs well. The suction is very good and the filtration is excellent. The vacuum is also very quiet when on silent mode. Show details
20 years old, still as good as the day I bought it – 20 years old, still as good as the day I bought it. Never had a problem with it. I'm happy to find out today that I can get HEPA filters for it. As much as I would love to have a modern cleaner, there's no need. Show details · 1

Worst vacuum ever – This machine has been nothing but trouble. Replace motor in year 2, entire wand and hand controls were replaced at our cost. It continues to overheat every time we use the power head. It blows very hot smelly air straight up at the operator. It has very good suction when it works but no good to us without the powerhead. $260 for a new one..no way it's all going in the bin. Show details
Worst vacuum cleaner I have ever bought – Worst vacuum cleaner I have ever bought. Within weeks the spring that closed attachment compartment just fell off, next when I changed the vac bag the entire mechanism that holds the bag in place came off with the bag, I never noticed at the time & it got thrown out with the bag. I have owned 2 other Meile Vacuum cleaners, that were terrific, but… Read more
the new models are a waste of money. Only used it for less than 3 months, it was out of warranty before I started using it. I had bought it as a replacement for when my old one died so had it in its box for 4 years.
Good on hard floors – I've had this cleaner for about 4 years now and it has never had a problem working. However, the degree of cleanliness varies from the type of material it is cleaning. On hard floors - tiles and wood floors it is great. Great suction, efficient cleaning action, can't complain. On carpets it is not so good. On short hard wearing carpets it is… Read more
reasonably good at getting the dirt and rubbish out. On medium to full carpets it is probably like all the others. It will get surface dirt off but nothing further down the pile.
I have a Vax Shampoo cleaner that I use to really clean the carpet afterwards. It picks up the dirt, sand and hairs that the Miele can't. The big difference is that the Vax has a rotary head with bristles on it - great for agitating the carpet. Every time I use it, the water comes out black with dirt sand and hairs that the vacuum cleaner misses.
The next cleaner I get will probably be a rotary brush cleaner type that agitates the carpet as it cleans.
The Miele is good, but I think Technology is now capable of producing something better than just sucking up the loose dirt.
It needs to agitate and wrestle loose all the dirt first in the carpet and then remove it. As I said before, on hard wearing floors its fine.

9 Lives & Counting – Whilst this model has been discontinued for some time, I purchased my original new in 2005 and then brought a second from ebay many years later as a backup and for cleaning the car. This model is an absolute legend and is the most robust machine Ive ever owned. It's moved with us 3 times, has vacuumed so much carpet and hard floors, the garage,… Read more
cars, outdoor patio areas of leaves and dirt etc and just keeps going. It has toppled down flights of stairs been picked up by it's hose and have never lost a wheel. The hose and attachments are extremely durable and have not had to replace or repair and split hoses or broken attachments. If you can find one of these bad boys second hand, Grab It! You won't be disappointed. This model was also made in Germany
Absolute Legend – I know this vacuum has been discontinued but I wanted to say how utterly amazing this cleaner is. I've had it around 12 years and it's had a really tough life. I've just finished vacuuming up another pile of renovation mess with the Miele and looked at my dusty, scuffed up blue faithful machine and thought "you couldn't kill this thing with a… Read more
grenade" it works as good as the day I bought it. I now feel inclined to hit it with the Mr Sheen and a micro fibre cloth, maybe attach a medal for valor on it.
Likely my final review after 14 years – It's bought in 2007. It's been used for such a long time (almost twice a week).... was working well without any faults. Today I went to buy C3 powerline because I need one for my another place. Show details
Miele life long product! – Super easy to use! I'm a visual learner and I love the fact the buttons on the Miele vacuum have pictures to adjust what type of floor your are vacuuming- brilliant! It's a powerful machine you will have no issues with sucking unwanted rubbish. Definitely worth it! Show details

Excellent suction – Are you happy with the performance/suction? Yes, it has excellent suction and bags are not too expensive Is it light? Quiet? Easy to maneuver? It is of average weight and fairly noisy, but does the job well What type of floors and how big is the area you vacuum? I vacuum my carpeted apartment of 90 square metres Show details
Great product! – Are you happy with the performance/suction? : Miele is one of the best vacuum cleaners I have had in a long time. Most of the vacuum cleaners I purchased usually broke down quickly, but this one keeps on going. Its great! The suction and the performance is the same as when I bought it 2 years ago. Is it light? Quiet? Easy to manoeuvre?: Very… Read more
light but not quiet and the cord makes it a big hard to manoeuvre.
What type of floors and how big is the area you vacuum?: I have vacuumed everything from my car, hardwood floors, carpets and tiles using this vacuum. Its very good and does a good job.
The best vacuum ever – Have it for 7 years now, just changing bags every couple of months. Good for carpet and timber floors. Suction is still as good as at the first day. It has 6 suction levels, never used more than 3 level. I would highly recommend this vacuum cleaner to everyone. Just find out they do not make it anymore. Show details
value for money – Good suction though not as good as my old Dyson DC04 upright Manages pet hair well and great on our tiles and timber floors. Bags easy to change and the extra filters do really work well. I also add a few drops of essential essence to freshen the house. Easy to manoeuvre Quiet functions are great for curtains and upholstery and of course doesn’t upset our cats. Show details
Awesome, would not change...just upgrade if necessary – This little vacuum cleaner just goes and never gives up. As long as you keep the filters clean and change bags it just works relentlessly. I tried cheaper bags (the original are a tad expensive...unless you get them online in bulk :-) - but cheaper bags are really not worth it. They 'leak' when overfilled. the original bags just keep filling and… Read more
the little flap holds all the dust in when you remove the full bag. On occasions I have filled the bag until it's like a "brick" of dust and dirt.
We have cats and a labrador, the turbo head picks up all the hair with ease. I use it EVERYWHERE from car to carpets and wooden floors to patio. Highly recommend it.
great little beast – Always does the job, just the filter is a bit on the expensive site but good as well. The spares are great the turning brush gets all the hairs. The standard brush runs down to quick for wood or stone floors and I had to spent another 90$ bucks to get the one for such floors. Show details
Great vacuum cleaner – The performance is great. It is 'lightish' - probably a normal weight for a vacuum cleaner. It is fairly easy to maneuver; like any vacuum cleaner you have to keep your eye on it as they do not always follow as you would like them to. The noise level is also normal. I use it for carpets; I have to put it on either the most powerful or second-most… Read more
powerful setting. I live in a two-bedroom unit and it is very suitable for that area. The machine also has other settings for items such as rugs and lounge chairs. This is my daughter's vacuum cleaner, but I wanted to review it because it is a good product. I definitely would consider buying a miele vacuum cleaner for myself.
Great vac – If you have a cat like we do this Vacuum cleaner works well, The Vacuum cleaner and bags are expensive, but you are definitely paying for what you get, the best Vacuum cleaner. Because its cleaning ability has to be the best I have ever had, I would have no problems buying another one. Show details
Best vacuum cleaner ever owned. WOW so much suction power – It's red so it looks good. Has bags but takes forever to fill them and we have 3 cats in the house. Different tool attachments useful for difficult areas. Lightweight and maneuvers easily around on any surface. OMG the suction power on full it almost sucks up your carpets from the floor. Optional suction power so you can choose the right… Read more

Replacement bags are inexpensive.
If you buy any other vac and not this one you will be disappointed.

Miele S5261 vacuum still going strong – Are you happy with the performance/suction? if if suffers I check or change the bag Is it light? Quiet? Easy to maneuver? works & manoeuvers very well What type of floors and how big is the area you vacuum? carpet 40% tiles 15% & polished boards 45% are all in a 3 bed room home. Show details
Great vacuum, still going strong after 7 years – I decided to go with a German made Miele model, and have been very happy with my purchase. Our house can be a bit mouldy, so it was great to have the HEPA filter on the vac. I love the onboard tools, and that the suction can be adjusted to be quieter in the evening. It does hard floors and carpets very well. The cord retraction still works… Read more
well after seven to eight years. Maneuverability is fine, though I often run over the cord. I wish the cord was a couple of meters longer. The Vac is easy to empty, and the filters are easy to change. The replacement bags and filters are a bit pricey however.
So reliable! – I've had my Miele for over seven years now and it's still going strong. I have two cats and I also foster kittens for an animal shelter, so we have a LOT of pet hair in our house. This vacuum is powerful and the rotating brush in the head does a great job of picking up hair. Sometimes the brush can get clogged, so I just grab some scissors and cut… Read more
out the hair that's gotten caught. Unfortunately it's not made anymore, but if this one ever breaks down I will definitely buy another Miele.
Indestructable vacuum cleaner – I've had this vacuum cleaner for about 12 years or more now. It's a great cleaner. On highest speed it will lift the carpet. On the downside the bags are expensive..but they do last. I tried the cheap bags but it was a waste of time. It's also heavy..so may be a problem for old ducks. I replace the filters religiously and I believe this adds to… Read more
the life of the cleaner. Filters come with the Miele bags.I see so many of those fancy vacuums on verge chuck-outs to suggest something is wrong with them.
Powerful – I highly recommend any of the miele range. I've had the miele vacuum cleaner s5211 since 2012 and it is still going strong and very powerful. I have 2 dogs and they shed a lot of fur during the warmer months and I have found the miele s5211 vacumm cleaner does an amazing job with less effort compared to previous brands of vacuum cleaners Show details
11 years and still going! – After using several under $200 vacuum cleaners that didn't seem to work after a year, I decided to purchase my first Miele cats and dog model 11 years ago and was so impressed with its high standard performance that I bought a second one to be used upstairs. 11 years later, both are still working amazingly. The cover only started popping out 2… Read more
years ago and I fixed it back myself easily. I have 2 dogs and 3 children, so vacuuming has become my daily ritual. I wish Miele would make a cordless model. i would get it in a heartbeat!
Clean up for your vacuum – Although this series of the Miele vacuum has been discontinued, I just wanted to let others know that still have the machine that you can buy a CleanUP turbo dust separator for your machine. Having this onto your machine extends the life of your vacuum bags to last longer. It is designed so it intercepts dust before it enters the vacuum. Very… Read more
easy to attach to your machine and easy to empty and clean. It has a clear tank so you can see how much dirt and dust is being filtered. Then it is just a matter of untwisting and emptying and retwisting back on.
It fits directly onto your vacuum rod. It comes with 32mm & 35mm adaptors to suit your vacuum. This actually fits other vacuum cleaners that also have bags.
I am really liking it as I am saving money on dust bags. It is much easier to empty and clean now. I find my bags now last longer before they are actually filled with anything.
So highly recommend this product. Has made vacuuming that bit more tolerable as having a dog seems to fill up the dust bags much quicker and then need replacing too often.
I am not sure on the price but it wasn't overly expensive.
2 years 9 months and it died!!! – It would be a top vacuum it the motor did not die today... it was doing some weird sounds for last month (like it was warming up) and today it just stopped working. Dissapointed as Miele is apparently known for it's quality. ..not in this case... And fixing will probably cost as much as new one... do not recommend.
Awesome vacuum – I have been using it for almost 6 years now and still as good as new. Didn't loose any suction power, still lifting up carpets. Puts a smile on my face each time I vacuum. I will buy Miele again and I recommend this vacuum to everyone. You will be very happy with it.
Do Not Buy – This is vaccum that I wished my daughter had never purchased as a gift to me. You need to be physically fit as it is extremely hard work to vacuum with. The bags are ridiculously expensive and fill up fast if you have pet hair. You need to put an extension lead onto cord as it does not extend very far. I have always enjoyed vacuuming until i… Read more
received this vacuum. we have had several problems with ours and it was definitely not worth the $700 that was paid to at Godfreys. I would strongly urge people to try it out 1st and consider the expense of the continuous bags having to be purchased. It works well on carpet but not on tiles. The warranty is not long enough for such an expensive product.
Never again will I purchase a Miele.
Best barrel vacuum cleaner I've ever owned – A very good vacuum cleaner, made in Germany. Excellent suction with speed control. At full suction, sometimes it's hard to separate the head from the carpet! Bags are a bit expensive but have several layers of filtration and the vacuum really packs the dirt into the bag. A box of bags includes two separate filters. Try on-line for a better… Read more
price.
Tools are stored on board the vacuum under a cover. The extendible wand is metal and may be removed so the hose can be attached directly to the vacuum head or tools for close work. May be obsolete as I bought it two years ago.
Can't really think of any negatives other than the wheels are so good that the vacuum can move away from you when it is on smooth surfaces and you're trying to switch it on/off or rewind the cord. Vacuum cleaner is not cheap and neither are the bags but you get what you pay for and Miele have done an excellent job with the design and manufacturing of this model S5211.
Burnt out motor @ 3 years and 7 months – S5311 vacuum cleaner performed exceptionally well for 3 years and 7 months, I couldn’t fault it until the motor burn out. If you’re after a great vacuum cleaner with a 4 year max life span then definitely go for a Miele. NOTE: Unit was used for household use only. Bags and filter were changed regularly and was treated with care throughout… Read more
its use.
I purchased the unit for $390 from The Good Guys, Melbourne in 2011. A little pricey but based on reviews and knowledge it was made in Germany by Miele I thought the cost was justified. I expected great performance (which I got) with no major issues for 5 years (which I didn’t get). With a repair bill of $250+ to replace a primary component I know the additional investment would be pointless as I’d likely encounter the same issue in 3 years.
Summary: Great product which fails shortly after warranty has expired.
Reliable – bought this about 5 years ago, replacing a heavier cleaner which was hard to lug around. The cord is a little longer than other similar models which is much needed. Still going strong. The only downside is that you need to use the original miele bags, bought from their on line store, as any other generic bag, even if they claim to fit this model,… Read more
doesn't catch the dust and fluff correctly which ends up going everywhere except inside the bag. A reliable machine.
