Nissan Bad. Stay Away – Rubbish I will never buy Nissan Again. I always bought Toyotas and first time bought Nissan and it has big problems, This car's got turbo leak started at 110k km. Costing about $5 to $6 k at Sutton Chullora Sydney.
Reliable average performer – We purchased new in 2016 and have travelled 82k klms. A heathly mix of commuting and towing a 7x5 trailer on most weekends. Apart from the sunroof leaking (now fixed as drain pipes were blocked) we haven't has an issue. Comparatively it is under powered and lacks torque but if you are OK to cruise it will get you there. Road noise at highway… Read more
speeds is a bit intrusive and handling is neutral- not good and not bad. Overall it has proven to be a good solid workhorse for our family and we recently looked to upgrade it but the price of cars combined with reliability issues from modern cars and the nanny state safety issues plauging them we decided not to sell and just keep her.
Nissan X-Trail, Global-model flaws, Cover-up and apparent Corporate Protection in Australia – A comfortable and good looking vehicle BUT the CVT transmission & aircon systems are very common, major (costly) defects known to occur from around 70k kilometres and around time 5 year warranty expires. Facebook owner sites reflect extent of problems. Internet searches will reveal these problems not unique to Australia. Nissan does its utmost… Read more
to deny existence of any such problems and VCAT show little interest in assisting affected owners. In North America, where class action lawsuits are common, Nissan has extended warranty coverage to 7 years and introduced related service bulletins (not available in Australia) for equivalent model X-Trail, a clear indication that Nissan is aware of the subject flaws. If only VCAT was as caring about the interests of affected owners as it appears to be about the corporate interests and reputation of Nissan.

A lot of car for the money – I purchased a new Ti in 2015 and kept it for 8 years. That's more than twice the longest time I've kept a vehicle if that tells you something. At the time it was the best mid size SUV in my opinion, with a larger boot and better tech (DAB radio and apps) than the CX5, and more luxurious and better quality looking interior than the Forester with… Read more
similar capability to handle unsealed roads. For the price, the Xtrail T32 Ti is very good at everything - quiet, safety, space, practicality, luxury, camping trips, business meetings, and so on. When new it looked modern and attractive, the interior was classier and more modern than some BMWs on sale, and I got compliments from just about every passenger.
The infotainment unit was much easier to use than Euro cars, but on the down side, Nissan Connect was very flakey and rarely connected, and the apps were quickly outdated - namely Pandora which left Australia. Having DAB radio was a huge plus and got a lot of use. Overall though it was let down by the audio quality which was probably worst in class - very disapointing audio. In comparison the top of the line CX5 had a Bose sound system which was hugely better, but no DAB. One advantage of the Xtrail unit though is the top down birds eye view cameras which was very cool at the time.
The seats are supposedly designed by NASA or something but they're waaaaaaayyyy too firm. They're also designed so you can only slouch with a curved back. You can't sit upright because the headrest protrudes forwards putting your spine and neck into a C shape. If you prefer a relaxed seating position you won't notice.
The metal used for the body is way too thin and easy to dent. If you wonder how they got a car this good down to $50k this is how - they used tin foil for the body. My friend dropped an empty cardboard box on a fender and it dented it. Very hard to avoid dents because of how soft the metal is. When comparing it recently to a Subaru which felt very solid, the Xtrail seems very tinny.
The CVT gearbox is a ticking time bomb and the reason why I sold my Xtrail and cannot recommend buying one used. Note that the Forester also has this issue. I got to 100,000kms trouble free but sold it for fear the CVT gearbox would be a liability so large that the car is effectively a write off if the gearbox goes. At $12k to replace, for a $20k used car, it's a huge concern. When parts cost so much as to send a good car to the wrecker, it seems incredibly wasteful of manufacturers to build cars like this and I'm amazed environmentalists and governments don't even talk about lack of quality as a source of environmental damage. I would have kept the car if I knew it would cost $4k to replace the gearbox every 10 years or something like that.
Overall, extremely practical nice car. If you're buying one used, maybe one that has done 60,000 is fine and drive it for another 40,000kms. My advice - the CX5 is the smarter buy for a little bit more, as long as you can live without DAB, the boot is sufficient, and it never sees an unsealed road (suspension is tuned for tarmac only) - it should be good for 200,000kms.
Amazing SUV – Purchased second hand 3 years old with 43000kms from a Nissan dealer. My car is used for getting to work and going on outings on the weekends, I have found it to be a very pleasant vehicle to drive, for an SUV. Power is good when you need it, Intelligent 4WD is available if the car thinks it is necessary, sends power to all wheels. Interior is… Read more
well appointed with leather seats, 7 speed auto with manual override, tilt and slide sunroof, glass roof over back seats. split fold rear seats are great and the boot space is awesome, has under floor storage also, in the back. Only needs Android Auto/Apple CAr Play. Wouldn't go back to a normal vehicle after driving the X-Trail
Great car!! – I am so happy we brought this car second hand from Nepean motor group! Its so smooth to drive, feels safe, easy to park and great size for our family of 5! We have 3 car seats that fit comfortably across the middle row, plus the option of the two extra seats in the back. Show details

Nissan cars have CVT problems (search online) and my biggest regret is that I bought one! Buy a Toyota instead! – After only having the car for a year the CVT transmission completely failed and I was quoted $12.5k to get it replaced by Nissan. I went through the goodwill process where they predictably washed their hands of it with excuses such as too old and too many km/s. My previous Nissan X-Trail from 2001 lasted 20 years and racked up over 300k km/s and… Read more
never required complete transmission replacement but this one from 2015 just made it past half of that in km/s and just over a third in years and Nissan used every excuse in the book to do nothing to help. The guy from Nissan couldn't really justify why a car from over a decade later would be less reliable, but they don't make them like they used to.
I am now left with a car on finance that requires another 4 years to pay off and a it's a lemon I can't afford to fix. So I'm now paying finance for a useless hunk of junk. To anyone reading this whatever you do, do not buy a Nissan car ever! It's the worst decision I've ever made in my life and I'd like you to learn from my mistake. Toyota is the only way to go and that company will have my family's business exclusively now.
My XTrail Almost a good car – Positives first - My XTrail rides comfortably. The small turbo diesel is fuel efficient. The build quality is good. The reversing camera is good. (Almost a good car - but not quite). Negatives - Nissan Australia have been quite arrogant & disinterested when I raise concerns. My XTrail could have been so much better. The car stalls regularly and… Read more
easily - this was described by the Nissan Service Officer as a "Characteristic of the car". I now just live with this "XTrail Characteristic" - I hope that one day the XTrail does not leave me or my Family, sitting at an intersection, with a stalled car, waiting for a semi to "T Bone" us. The Nissan GPS provides a poor level of street and suburb information in the Sydney area. Even with an update, the Nissan GPS has been out of date. The GPS is unreliable, frequently providing incorrect directions and provides very poor street & town information outside of Sydney. The GPS was almost 2 years out of date when I purchased the car. Nissan took over 12 months to provide an update for my new car (at this point the Nissan GPS was about 3 years old). Nissan initially (arrogantly) stated I would have to pay $700 for an update (not recognising that I should have received an up to date GPS with the new car). True to form - The XTRail is now just over 7 years old and the GPS continues to be around 2 years out of date (Sydney NorthConnex which opened about 18 months ago, is still not recognised) - Nissan Customer Service now (again arrogantly) advise "Older cars get limited support - Is there anything else I can help you with" - I assume this Nissan response is identifying - "Nissan feels I need to buy a new car if I wish to solve my concern". The Nissan Dealer advises they have other Customers in the same GPS situation (Words to the effect of) - "Forget about your Nissan GPS - Buy an aftermarket GPS system". The blind spots from the driver seat are dangerous - limited vision around the windscreen pillars and side mirrors. My XTrail was sold to me with a stated 2 tonne towing capacity - There is no way my XTrail could tow a 2 tonne trailer up a reasonable incline, particularly from a stop start. The car is a toy 4WD. In comparison to my XTrail - I own a similar aged Mazda 3 - I can only compare the beaut quality and helpful service that Mazda provide. My Mazda 3 is excellent - I have experienced one small problem with my Mazda 3 - a small tear in the Drivers leather seat, Mazda fixed this problem without hesitation or question - outside of warranty. Thank you Mazda - Mazda you get more than 5 out of 5 stars from me. Before my Mazda 3 - I owned a car built in a Mazda factory (Ford Laser), this car was serviced for almost 2 decades by my local Mazda Dealer - I had the car for 25 years, it travelled over a quarter of a million kilometres (many years after I sold it, we still see it travelling around - This Mazda built car was almost flawless - Other than the expected items - tyres, batteries, a clutch replacement and a rear muffler replacement - a beautiful car even after 25 years. I cannot afford a new Nissan every 7 years - My next car will not be a Nissan.
Reliable but has terrible visibility – I've owned this car for about 3 years now and found it is very economical and reliable. However, the blind spots are horrible, very hard to see around the door/roof pillars as they are so large. Show details

36000km and catastrophic failure of electronic control module – This car drove ok, but with minimal km by elderly couple, I only discovered that an electronic control module failed at 36,000km after 6yrs and out of Nissan warranty. Also significant wear on the front tyres which is unusual for those kms. When the module failed on a hill it left me going backwards in a potentially life threatening situation.… Read more
Dealing with Nissan has been extremely difficult despite the car being regularly serviced, mostly by Nissan. It looks like I will have to take them to fair trading. Other minor problems are wires loose on their cameras, causing intermittent pictures and the difficulty of seeing to the near left and right of the car at slow speeds as the car frame at the front is quite wide and blocks the view. However the most difficult problem seems to be dealing with Nissan.
Good car. But build quality is average – Pros: You would get all the high techs for this class. Cons: Build quality is average. I can already see a little bit rust here and there after 4 years. After 4 years use seats are so hard that it feels like sitting on a wooden chair. Because they have use cheap vinyl not leather. Also auto tailgate buttons below the steering wheel gets… Read more
switched off always because my knees touch those buttons when I try to get in and out of the car. Also you do not get nissanconnect support in Aus now. Engine bay is cheaply design that you don't feel it premium when you compare with other cars. My old crv 2007 had much better build quality overall. Needless to say nisaan CVT is not good it puts so much pressure on the engine and pick up is not the best as engine power is not enough for a suv.
Great car but faulty aircon – Aircon stops everytime in an hour while driving. Not enough air diffuse in that time. So frustrated. Need to turn off the ac for 5 minutes and turn on again to get some cold air. Mine is a 2014 ST model. Car is great and spacious interior. Show details
Another CVT failure – Purchased the vehicle in 2015 (2014 run-out model) at the same time as a friend at work bought his. I always looked after the vehicle and had it regularly serviced at the local Nissan dealership since new. At around 90,000 km my friends' vehicle had a gearbox failure, which was repaired under warranty. At around 120,000 km my vehicles CVT… Read more
gearbox failed (quoted $ 8,000 - $ 9,000 to repair), and with the vehicle warranty expiring at 100,000 km was advised that it would not be covered by warranty. After a protracted 'battle' with the dealership and intent to take the case to QCAT the dealership eventually agreed to repair it as a 'gesture of good will'. While it is a nice vehicle it is obvious Nissan have some serious problems with their CVT gearboxes, not just on the X-Trail but many other models. Read the reviews on the internet. I believe there was a class action against Nissan in the US regarding the issue. While I love my X-Trail I would not buy another Nissan as the risk is just too great to end up with a $ 9,000 repair bill once the warranty runs out.

Not bad but could be better – I have issues with Drivers seat , when I do 30 kms a hour it makes Clicking noise and a small play including accelerating and Breaking. dont trust them based on the previous service on the air con. I will never buy a Nissan again which is a shame because I loved my car. Its comfortable and great to drive but not so great when its hot and I have three going kids in the car crying from being too hot.
Ths sad truth - AC system and no responsibility by Nissan – Nissan X Trail: CYP51H. VIN: JN1TBNT32A0006482 Model: 2015 X Trail STL 4WD I bought the car, new, and received a substantial Government discount due to the fact that I am a Vietnam Veteran and hold a TPI Gold Card from the Department of Veterans Affairs. Conditioning started to malfunction. After 20-25 minutes it would simply cut out. As I was at a Vietnam Veterans Bi-Annual reunion on Phillip Island (I organise these events every two years: www.hq1atf.otg) I visited Diverse Auto Electrics in Cowes for them to ascertain the problem! To no avail.
On my return home to Merimbula, I visited my Nissan dealer (Momsen Motors in Bega) and they also checked the AC. Again I visited them just prior to Christmas as the problem continued. They basically told me that it could be a figment of my imagination!
I then contacted the TCS department at Nissan Australiat, spoke to a lady called [name removed], and was given a case number 1096548. I returned to Momsen Motors and they again, seemingly, rectified the problem. Nissan agreed to reimburse me an amount of $1200, via Momsen Motors even though the car was by then out of warranty. Nissan never did advise me of this offer, it was only through Momsen Motors that I found out the money was reimbursed after four phones and a one month waiting period.
Due to this ongoing problem and the AC still not being rectified I decided to just put up with it and buy a new car (probably a RAV 4, Hybrid) in early 2020. By then my business had been transferred to Ron Doyle Motors in Eden. You could say by this stage I was starting to feel a little fed up!
We went to Perisher in late August 2019 and found the heating also had the same problem. Enough is enough. My 130K service was due and on chatting with a most professional person at Ron Doyle Motors [name removed]) he decided to investigate.
The problem, he told me, was as detailed in Nissan Bulletin No: HAC 15-001 1. Air conditioner not working after approximately 30 minutes in use. 2. No air coming from the air vents after prolonged use. 3. Excessive water coming from air conditioner drain when vehicle has been turned off and parked for a while.
These three problems are exactly what was happening. As Nissans Bulletin states that the problem only occurred with vehicles built prior to 21 June 2014, the response from Nissan was interesting they advised by phone that my problem was not related to the Bulletin HAC 15-001. The person on the phone was quite direct and kept asking what I wanted. I said, fix the problem.
Ron Doyle Motors then advised me that they feel that the problem has been rectified as per Nissan Bulletin HAC 15-001 and hopefully it will rectify the heating as well. The problem has been rectified, some 75 per cent. However the AC still cuts out and we switch off the auto control, wait five minutes and put the fan on manually. With heating, it is the same scenario. Does anyone else have these problems as Nissan as simply washed their hands of the affair.
Horrible Car, with residual issues and weak after sale services – The car came with rattle and odd vibration, back to the dealer but no proper action just got the car and returned it after couple of days, contacted with head office, inappropriate customer service, never recommend to buy a Nissan. Nissan scarified quality and removed some essential and standard items and replaced them by some features in the cabin and 360 cameras. Show details
Not entirely happy – This is my second car, having driven a 2004 Mitsubishi Lancer for 12 years before now. I loved the look of the older more box shaped xtrail, and had driven my aunt's 2003 model with the sunroof. I didn't want to shop around, I just wanted an xtrail. I found a 2015 model that was practically new with full service history, low km's and low price.… Read more
Fairly happy with it except for one major problem... the vision is so terrible. There is a reversing camera but trying to change lanes on a busy highway is slightly terrifying. All cars have blind spots, so you turn your head to make sure there is nobody beside you, but the 2015 xtrail has such tiny windows at the back and sides that it is very hard to see. I have tested the vision at day and night and I am shocked at how poor it is. My other serious dislike about this car is the Speedo is not correct. Apparently this is something some new cars feature to lessen speeding tickets? If I am travelling at 80km/hr according to the car, I am actually only moving at 75km/hr. I thought I was being paranoid about it until I tested it and found out this is a thing. I think it is absolutely ridiculous. The sound system is terrible and it was so hard trying to listen to music for the first few months (I got used to it eventually, unfortunately) Also the Nissan Connect app is crap. Do not recommend. Also a real hassle to get the cars ownership details updated with Nissan when you buy it secondhand (must be done to use nissan connect app) I do like the airconditioner chilled cup holders. And the underseat aircon. The removable floor bits in the boot and the ability to fold seats forward etc is all fine. The "net" over the boot is annoying and useless. I like the extra cup holders and the adjustable back seats. Very confortable to sit in the back on a long drive. I am not entirely disappointed. It has electric windows and cruise control which as luxuries to me.
Really good family car – I've owned my 2014 Xtrail from new and can say it hasn't missed a beat mechanically. Which is great, because I intend to keep driving it for the next 5+ years if possible. their friends on short trips - to and from friends houses and sporting events. The additional fold-down seats are really only good for short trips - there's barely any leg room, even with the middle seats pushed forward. Otherwise, when the back two seats are down, there's plenty of room in the middle seats and plenty of luggage space. Extra-wide-opening rear doors are a great help to get the kids and their various possessions in and out.
The front seats are really comfy and I enjoy the feature of heated seats in winter.
The leather seats are easy to clean and come up a treat with a bit of hot water and detergent. However, the gloss finish on the dashboard attracts dust like nothing else. I've taken to keeping a dust-mitt in the centre console for regular cleaning of the dash. The reversing camera is really-handy - Nissan have super-imposted a graphic of the car (top-down) when reversing, so it looks like there's a camera hovering above the car. Very clever and makes reversing very easy.
It's reasonably economical to drive - we spend about $30 a week and that's going about 250km each week.
Would I buy again - yes.
An absolute gem of a car – This car is incredible. Beautiful to look at, amazing to drive, easy on fuel, reliable, roomy, safe and cheap to maintain. The interior is comfortable and easy to clean. The push button start and keyless entry is lush. I'm so in love with this car and will recommend it over and over again. Show details
First SUV and couldn't be happier after four years' ownership – I bought my X-Trail ST 2WD new, in 2014, when I became a grandfather and wanted a bit more space and metal around my precious granddaughter. step-less auto relaxing and unobtrusive, especially on hilly roads where the CVT doesn't hunt up and down gears.
I have been very happy with my purchase, which came after evaluating most other SUVs in its class, including the CX5 (class leader according to the press at that time). 100% reliable, roomy, well-equipped for the price and surprisingly economical (average 7.7L/100kms to date), I find myself frequently telling my wife and son how much I like this car. Coming from a petrol-head like me - (and longstanding car enthusiast) that is high praise indeed.
I usually start to eye up other cars and think about a swap as the third year of ownership approaches. This time around however, I have no such inclinations. Already more than happy with the superb value for such a competent car (I paid $29,990 drive away), I see no reason to trade it in. This is perhaps the most all-round economical car I have owned in thirty years!
Oh and the 2WD has proven to be quite capable on dirt, too. My hobby is photographing motorcycle trials and the events often take place miles from anywhere, at the end of some rather rough gravel roads. The extra ground clearance that an SUV provides has been a boon and i haven't yet needed more traction.
When the time comes to trade it in, I will mostly likely head back to the Nissan dealer ...
Perfect 7 seater – This is by far the most value for money we have bought and we have changed cars couple of times. No nonsense car and will never fail you. Love it. Fuel economy is good and service is only once a year. Great boot space and great back seat legroom. The back seats in the 7 seater for kids only, dont expect grown up to sit there. Show details

Love it! – Use daily for work and also road trips. Never had any issues. Drives smoothly. Lots of space in the back and in the boot. You can barely notice the transmission changing gears. At low revs it shakes – Buyer beware, do not purchase these cars, badly made, and worst company to deal with. Have had steering wheel vibrations the moment we purchased it. its the make up of the car. They didn't bother checking it, only offered a wheel balance that has done nothing. I will now take it to an independent mechanic for external advice.
Previously owned Kia, and Hyundai cars, and never had an issue with them.
My advice to anyone, if they are looking to drive one of these, drive it for a long time, and cruise with it at low Rpm, than make your judgement.
My 2nd X-Trail and I love it! – I had a Nissan X-Trail 2012 and traded it in for a small car due to its high petrol consumption and high service cost. At this time I did not know that one can service a new car at a mechanic other than the dealer itself without losing the warranty. The day I handed my keys over, I already regretted it because I really loved my car. Having had the… Read more
small car for 4 years, I needed to get an X-Trail again and so I did: A used 2016 ST 4x4 with only 3,500 km on the odometer for a very good price. The only bad decision was that I took the "Cosmetic Package" which includes Windows tinting, colour protection and small chip and scratch repair for a small amount per job. This was an extra $ 2,000.00 and definitely NOT worth it!
Shortly after picking up my X-Trail, I went on a trip from Mornington, VIC to Hahndorf, Barossa Valley and Adelaide, SA. The car was excellent in every aspect! We were 2 people, therefore more than enough space for our luggage. Driving mostly on freeways and highways, the best petrol consumption was 6.4 litres/100 km and 91 Octane petrol is enough (I had a German car before and needed to put 95+ petrol in the tank which was getting very expensive). Driving short distances - I'm talking about 2-5 km back and forth (moving house last week) is a different story: The fuel economy was at about 14 litres/100 km, but no one usually does this (?).
I cannot complain about anything so far and it's been 7 months since I bought this car.
Great Economical SUV – This car is being used everyday for our family. Really good value for money with enough room for 7 people. Eco mode option is very useful to save petrol these days. Great Car! – Use this car all the time - from commuting to work to family road-trips. Only draw back I see in this car is it takes little longer to come to the speed ( in comparison to my pervious V6 car). Cruise control is very precise and it shows the speed you setup in the trip computer. I haven't used this for rough terrain so I don't know the performance of it. However it is a great car for your daily used. great fuel conceptions when you do long trips. Reversing camera is really clear even at nights
All my friends get jealous how good it is – Though I didn't try the old x trail, the new one got me right the first day. The stl model 7 seats got me to all occasions from moving house, family get away, and tricky parking( thanks to the 360 camera),the car just got smooth acceleration when comparing to those hire cars I have driven, light steering.
