Started smoking while not in use – The microwave was solid for a bit over 5 years use however it started smoking heavily from the inside the right panel near the light while not in use. Luckily my son happened to be walking past otherwise a fire may have occurred. I have seen others with this problem which is concerning and hope Panasonic have found a solution for future models (if… Read more

Overpriced for a poor quality product – This microwave oven performs adequately. The only issue is that rust forms within the cavity after about two years. We bought this Microwave through Winning Appliances. The first unit was replaced, as goodwill by Winning Appliances outside the warranty due to rust appearing on the inside of the door (see pic). I got the replacement unit in July… Read more

2018. We recently discovered rust forming under the platter in the cavity of the microwave (see pic). On both occasions, we approached Panasonic about the issue. Their latest reply is similar to the one 2 years ago:

"Thank you for your email with attached photos.

Your case has been reviewed by our technical team and mentioned that rust or peeling paint as shown in the supplied photos is not a product of the manufacturing process and usually occurs due to a number of reasons that are beyond the control of Panasonic."

On querying what constitutes reasons beyond the control of Panasonic, I was referred to Page 18 of the manual which covers cleaning the oven (see below). We regularly clean the oven. However, Panasonic reckons after viewing photos sent that the cleaning was inadequate. Similar experiences have been expressed by other reviewers on other models of Panasonic microwave ovens.

I have another Panasonic microwave oven (at another property) that was purchased in 2006 and still works without missing a beat. There are no rust issues on this oven. The big difference is that the older oven has a white enamel-like interior finish. The new ovens have a metallic painted finish. This I believe is prone to rust.

It is totally unreasonable for Panasonic to rely on the quality of the consumer's cleaning, which has a very wide interpretation, to justify a defective and cheap finish on newer microwaves. Panasonic cannot demand a premium with this sort of quality issue.

Update: 28 Oct 20 - I had previously reported to my Winning Appliance representative about the reply I got from Panasonic. He suggested I contact the Head Office Customer Experience team. I called them today to explain the case. The representative felt it was a bit silly to rely on cleaning as an excuse for the rust problems. After consulting with her seniors, there was not much they could do in this matter as I had already had a microwave previously replaced.

I then contacted Panasonic who provided a number to contact after reading the review on this forum. The initial Panasonic representative listened to the rust problems I had with the microwave but proceeded to say that as their engineers have already assessed that the issue is beyond the control of Panasonic, there not much he can do. He also explained that the painted surface can be damaged by scratching like a food particle stuck under the platter. This would not explain the rusting on the door that a previous unit had and the current unit is beginning to develop. He also offered to have his supervisor call me so that I can present my case. The supervisor called me and I presented my case. He again told me firmly but politely, that as Panasonic engineers have deemed that the rusting is due to factors beyond their control, he has to go by their engineer's assessment. It seemed like Panasonic was Judge, Jury, and Executioner in this matter.

In conclusion, Panasonic seems to have an edge here against customers in the wide interpretation of the obligation for the customer to keep the microwave clean. I believe the metallic finish is not durable and is prone to rust if scratched in some form e.g. food particles, dirt on wipe cloth. I find it incredible that a product can be designed in a domestic situation that makes such demands on cleanliness for the product to last. I feel from my experience that painted finish in microwaves is not meant to last and a white enamel finish for the cavity is more durable.

A decent microwave – Having had a Panasonic Inverter microwave that finally stopped working after 12 years, was happy enough to go with Panasonic again. As far as cooking goes, this replacement model does the job just as well as my last one. My old one was white inside, they've made the new one dark grey so harder to see inside while cooking (and any spatter for… Read more

cleanup).

My only major complaint (like a few others) is the cooling function. I can heat something for 5 minutes, no cooling needed, then heat something for 10 seconds afterwards and then have to listen to the fan blasting for another minute.

I wouldn't say it's particularly louder than any other microwave, but it's not quiet by any means and it always seems to decide it needs to cool when you'd like a bit of silence.

Overall, it's still a decent microwave, the preset functions work fairly well and having had an inverter microwave previously it's the only type I'd use in future. Time will tell if I get the same lifespan out of this one as I did the old.

Good, conventional and easy to use – We bought this microwave a few months ago even after reading reviews, to replace our 9 year old one. So far, we find it really easy to use and its' surprisingly larger on the inside than our old one. It's quite compact on the outside (we had to keep it to certain measurements to fit into our overhead cupboard), and light weight. It's easy to… Read more

clean on the inside and outside as it does not have handles, buttons or knobs that stick out. We do find it hard to close the door at times, but give it little extra push and it shuts just fine. The best thing it feels sturdy enough to mildly slam the door shut without worrying about breaking it. Its a nice mix of brushed stainless steel and black, which suits our kitchen.

Operationally, it seems to warm up food evenly and we like the feature where we can reduce the power each time we use it as we see fit (e.g., 800w, 900w, 1000w to 1100w).

I agree with some of the other reviews about it being very noisy. It makes the standard noise when it cooks / heats up food, then it takes between 10-30 seconds to cool down after moderate to heavy use. This part is noisy - no more than the sound it makes when it operates, but people (like ourselves) have an expectation that when it stops heating it turns off, instead of running to cool itself down. This is not a flaw, it is what the inverter technology does to protect the microwave from overheating and blowing up.

Because a few people have stated, the microwave did not last very long, we bought 4 year extended warranty for $24 extra which gives us the piece of mind. We know items made these days are not going to last 10 years like the older models did, but we decided to stick with panasonic much like a lot of our appliances around the house.

Overall, its a great looking microwave which suits us well.

+ Looks great, works well, light weight, easy to use and feels sturdy.

- A little pricey and the cool down function is a bit noisy.

Haven't had a problem – Despite all the negative reviews on here, I haven't had a problem with this! Find it reliable and easy to clean. The cooling down function can be a bit disconcerting at first but you get used to it after a while. Show reply

Panasonic Microwave NN-ST671S – Panasonic microwave is easy to use. Heats and cooks food evenly and food’s original texture is preserved. Preset timers and functions easy to use. It is reliable. Good no frills microwave – Does what you expect. The cooling down feature can be a bit annoying, but it only does it after a couple of uses. However most of the new microwaves have the same issue. Cooks well but rusts out – ABout 20 months into it's life I noticed rust bubbling up around the inside of the compartment. I have owned a nummber of various microwaves of various brands and this is the only one that this has occured to. Poor powder coating or materials used but it sure is dis-appointing. Maybe the result of manufacturing being Chinese nowadays. I wont be buying this brand again.

Great for 8 yrs – The microwave performed perfectly for 8 years. Like other reviews there was some rust noticed inside of door after 6yrs and finally it sparked and smoked (Burnt) from the inner right side when using. I had no idea that this was common until reading other reviews. Thankfully we had 8 years of use.  Show details

I've a number of Panasonic's but am disappointed with this one.

It looked fine on the shelf in lots of light but in my fairly light kitchen it's a pain in the proverbial to try and see the labels on the buttons and the LED display is a rather pale green which can be hard to make out what it's displaying.

I should have looked a bit harder and a bit further.

You get what you pay for – I've found this to be a well performing microwave for its mid-range price tag. It doesn't take up too much kitchen space, is easy to figure out, heats food quickly enough (sometimes you do need to stir food so it heats evenly but that's not a huge deal) and has lasted four years without a hitch.  Show details ·  1

Worked well, until it didn't – Purchased the microwave in April 2015 worked well until today. Had visible flames shooting into the cooking cavity from the side. Admittedly, we used it on a daily basis, so it’s had plenty of use, but throwing it away after just 3 years seems obscene. Personally, I’d be prepared to pay much more for something designed to last. So the question is: did I get a lemon, or is this a typical example of a modern panasonic microwave?  Show details

Average - not great – It's negative traits are quite significant. Firstly, the general cooking function is very inconsistent, and it's the loudest machine I've ever used. Easy to use – Have had this since 2015. We don’t use it often and only for reheating when we do. But it does the job and the buttons are easy enough to read and operate. Not Bad – I'm fairly happy with this microwave. Been using since March 2017 and it's still going well. It's easy to use and easy to clean. My only complaint is that the button to open the oven door is not very strong and it often gets stuck, thus the door won't open. Also takes a while to cool down after each use. Good overall microwave – Microwave has most of the features you'd expect from a mid-range model, and works well/reliable (this is my 2nd Panasonic).
