Lovin it – I'd be expecting less for a beginners camera but so far it's been a great leaning curve from using a bridge camera. Understanding how a camera works is the key to understanding photography, which is something that you don't lean overnight. If your used to using point and click, don't use this, you'll suffer expecting zoom and low light use. You need different lenses to use these two different features successfully. Light, easy to carry, stable. size, ha, no really, the lens is huge.
Great camera without expensive price tag – I'm have been using this camera for 2 years now and still very happy with it. It's great in low light, high fps and very comfortable to use. The menu is very easy use. It's very affordable which is great because you can save the money to buy good lens. Don't be tempted by other brand name marketing. Their picture are produced by very expensive lens. It uses normal AA battery so easily swap out and charge and can be found anywhere if forgot to bring a charger. The eneloop rechargeable battery is the best battery to use because of its low discharge feature.
The Pentax K-x beats other in its class without a doubt. Inexpensive, high fps, great in low light. Pentax has one of the best Prime lenses. Cheaper lenses because in-body image stablisation system rather in the lens. Use AA battery which is much cheaper to buy. No AF indicator but as a good practice, use spot focus.
For entry level, what a stunner!! – Despite the other reviewers comments about auto focus, which can be a little annoying at times, this camera is an absolute winner for me. The feature set was ahead of its time. The image quality is superb and still ahead of the pack. Dynamic range is huge and still hard to beat with more expensive cameras. Built in HDR and other filters allow for creativity.
Pentax famous use of old Lenses, so if you have Dad's old Pentax in the cupboard, just buy a body only and your under way.
Lens quality ahead of some other famous names.
I started out with one of the big names, but regretted not buying the Kx, when I did, felt right at home.
Solid well built feel.
Use sanyo eneloop batteries for maximum life.
Unusual choice of AA batteries, but with sanyo's was good.
One of the best entry level / student, available. Have taken some awesome shots. solid, HDR, image quality, use old lenses, creativity, In camera stabilisation. 'sometimes' confused AF
OK – If you're on a budget, and a really tight one at that, consider the Pentax Kx. I bought this as a backup camera, and was satisfied with the image quality and speed, but there are a few drawbacks with this camera that made me part with it rather quickly. What bothered me the most is the autofocus is a bit quirky. The autofocus gives no real indication of where its focusing, which is a bit bizarre, and often you need to change the focus mode and recompose your photo.
Pentax should have put more thought into it, given that this camera is priced for at the low end, and targetted at beginners who will most likely need a good AF.
IF this is your first DSLR, then don't be tempted by the price. Although this camera can produce some outstanding photos, I would urge you to consider another brand. Vast range of colours available
Reasonable picture quality
Runs on AA batteries.
Decent build quality given its price. Autofocus is hit and miss
All a bit irrelevant now, but there are a couple of things I'd really want to stress - Firstly, creativity does not depend on the camera. Second, I would much prefer to buy an older Nikon rather than the K-x new.
There are some terrible cameras out there - the Nikon D3000 is one such example. Depends how you look at it - but for most beginners, close to a thousand dollars should buy you more than just a toy - imho.

Slightly disappointed with some comments. Yes AF has a few issues, but definitely a strong stills photo camera. Not ideal for video, but if picture quality and creativity is key on a low budget, it was and almost still is ahead of some other major brands.
Agree, Always look at alternatives, but a few second hand ones now for students and a bargain.
At the end of the day, no truly bad DSLRS out there.
