Bought this in 2011 and it still works 10 years later - definitely recommend it – I mostly use it to make pizza dough but still do the occasional bread. Works really great. Bought this 10 years ago and still going strong. Would definitely recommend the Sunbeam Bakehouse Compact Automatic dough & bread maker BM2100. Show details

Serious Health Issues with Sunbeam Bakehouse Compact bread maker – The Australian Consumer Law 'major fault' is a significant health issue with model BM2100 Sunbeam Bakehouse. It has a fixed kneading blade at the base. Mine hasn't had much use. The major fault or health issue that I only just discovered is that any old cooked flour and any old cooked seeds or other food items goes into the bread maker has… Read more

the potential to gets lodged under the white plastic 'washer' of sorts located directly under the fixed kneading blade at the base.

This Australian Consumer Law 'major fault' effectively renders the machine a major health hazard, it should be returned to Sunbeam under warranty despite when it was purchased and Sunbeam must pay the cost for any request to return the faulty product; and rectify the problem with refund or replacement. Under the circumstances of the health issue you don't need proof of purchase.

Its just like the faulty car air bags issue. The manufacturer must bear the financial burden for this health issue.

A basic, but sturdy machine – I was given one of these machines as a present over 10 years ago, I still use it to this day to make about 10 loaves a month. I have found it to be a very capable, if entry level machine. It mixes, proves and cooks very well and if I had to list any cons they would be slight indeed. The only drawbacks of my machine is the screen printing on the… Read more ·  2

machine has worn off from use (not really the fault of a 10 year old bread maker) and the recipes supplied in the booklet need tweaking a little bit to suit the pre-mix you use (normal for any bread machine)

That being said, following the recipes for scratch made bread do make amazing loaves.

All round, if you can find one of these machines second hand (they are no longer sold as new) I would snap it up as a first bread machine or a replacement for another entry level maker.

Sunbeam bakehouse compact machine (with 6 programmes) malfunctioned - bread stopped at dough stage a – This machine is a disappointment because I tried it out twice using the French setting for French bread recipe, but after the full baking cycle, I discovered it had stopped at the dough stage both times! I had to take out the dough and form smaller rolls manually, baking at 175 deg centigrade for about 30 mins, yet both times, the loaf turned… Read more

out hard and dry! Could it be (which I think is unlikely) because I had substituted the original ingredients: eg milk for water, margarine for oil, half bread flour instead of all plain flour? I also added choc chips as fillings.

I've read other customers' reviews/questions, but am surprised that all Sunbeam could do was to advise them to dial a certain number to report the problems/feedbacks/complaints. On the other hand, the only constructive replies/ suggestions have come from concerned readers who are not even obligated to reply!

I feel the staff should at least make an effort to approach their own (relevant) departments to investigate and find out the reasons for the failures reported on this website, before getting back to the customers! This is what we in Singapore refer to as No wrong door policy as far as customer service is concerned!

Hence, I look forward to receiving a satisfactory reply or solution (from Sunbeam) to my above question/problem and many other similar ones which have gone unanswered so far.

Thank you!

Perfect little loaf of bread! – I just bought one of these second hand from Ebay. I followed the cooking instructions to the letter using a prepackaged "Laucke" mix. My bread turned out perfectly! It was eaten while still warm (we couldn't wait) with lashings of butter, yum! I had read other reviews that said you must follow the instructions exactly so that's what I did and it certainly paid off. It cooked my bread to perfection  Show reply

Doesn't make good bread – I had another Sunbeam Bread maker prior to this one, and made lots of good bread. display while cooking is confusing to the point of being meaningless. The old one just showed the time until bread time (what else what you want to know?). The new one just seems to show random times nobody cares about.

Seriously Sunbeam, you've blown your good reputation with me.

Does not perform it's function whatsoever.

Cheap and makes good bread – This is a cheap and simple machine that produced good medium sized bread, however it only lasted just over a year. The first machine was returned under warranty within a week when the non-stick coating bubbled up and fell off after the first use. Good starter/entry level machine. Simple to use but only makes medium loaves. Makes good bread. Cheap Small loaf size, lasted not much more than one year.

Excellent – would advise anyone thinking of buying a bread machine to get this one.we have been using bread makers for years and find this machine simple and easy to use. we bought this one because its on special at harvey norman, also have a Breville machine which we have had a number of years but we like this machine for its simple controls and smaller more manageable size loaf. non ,its great for the price.

Don't believe what you read – After originally having a Breville Bakers Oven, something that was scorned on Product Review(and rightfully so), and having it die, I searched these reviews for my next Breadmaker purchase. And this was it. I originally wanted a Panasonic but they seemed difficult to find and buy, so I went with this one as it was cheap and available. Well I… Read more

didn't do my homework too well, and after looking back through the reviews saw where I'd gone wrong. Two things were missing, an offset timer and a loaf size option, something the Breville had. Loaves now have to be set with the option of me being around to remove them when they're done, otherwise the bread goes soggy. And no matter what volume of ingredients you put in, with no size option, baking, kneading and rising are all the same. Small loaves work well, large loaves are too dense. The kneading blade is perfect and leaves only a slight hole, something it has ten times over the Breville whose kneading blade almost destroyed the bottoms of loaves. But apart from that, I think its a step sideways and back rather than forward. Recipe times are also out, stating 3:30 hours actually taking 4:30 hours, something that took some getting used to especially when you have to be around. And the with gap, grooves and a kneading blade that takes a lot of patience and fiddling to remove, cleaning the pan to a spotless level of quality is rather difficult.

Straight off the bat, I wasn't impressed with this appliance especially when my wholewheat function didn't work either. I took it back to where I purchased it, but they said it was under manufacturers warranty and I'd have to speak with them. I never got through on Sunbeams customer service line, and their contact feature on their website always had server issues when I'd try to submit my complaint. In the end I just lived with it, and bake everything in French now anyway. Cheap, simple and basic. Great kneading blade. No timer. No loaf size option. Very hard to remove kneading blade. Areas difficult to clean properly.

Excellent – Buy it! You will love it! Don't be caught in the trap of thinking you need to spend a fortune on a fancy breadmaker - they have more to learn (to use)and will not necessarily supply you with a perfect loaf! Even if you have a large family, this size will suffice.

A great machine, couldn't be happier with it! Brilliant machine! Just got mine and I have used it at least once a day to make a variety of breads! I have 5 young kids and we go through mountains so cutting the cost by baking my own!

So easy to use, just add ingredients and switch it on and forget about it until it beeps at completion! The kids love the chocolate bread recipe included in the manual! Saving so much money and having lots of fun experimenting.

There is really nothing I dislike about this appliance / model. It is so simple and no annoying fancy electronics panel that I have to 'learn' - a real plus!

Every loaf comes out like the baker's every time without fail and for a fraction of the cost!

Love this model and highly recommend! None whatsoever!

Happy with quality of bread – I was a bit skeptical at first, but I have always trusted Sunbeam so I thought this would be a good purchase anyway. I haven't looked back. Good – I was making previously making bread by hand to avoid all the additives that commercial bread has (such as soy flour and enzymes) to "improve" the bread. I eventually got tired of the weekly routine so I got this breadmaker. I used the same recipe as for my hand-made bread and was expecting half decent loaves but was extremely disappointed when… Read more

my first few loaves rose fine prior to baking then promptly collapsed when the oven started up. After a lot of experimentation in changing the amount of water and trying different cycles, I still could not get anything better than a (soft) brick. Surprisingly, if I used the dough function and baked the bread in a conventional (gas) oven, I would get perfect loaves.

I eventually figured out that these vertical loaf machines depend on the commercial bread improvers to hold the structure of the loaf in the deep pan when the baking starts. I have a strong dislike to adding anything like this to the bread so I did some research on the web and found that Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) can improve bread structure. So, I simply added the strained juice of one orange (90ml) to the water and reduced the water content from 300ml to 240-250ml (for white bread using 500g flour). Now I get fairly good loaves every time with no additives whatsoever. Woo hoo! Simple to operate Must use some form of bread improver to make sure the loaves don't collapse on baking

Simplea and few features but makes a good loaf – We got a secondhand Bakehouse compact from Vinnies. Some of the non-stick coating had been scraped off by the paddle but nonetheless it has been making bread for us at the rate of 2-4 loaves a week for the last 4 years without any issues - except when I forget a vital ingredient, like yeast! The tin is a little thin around the paddle area,… Read more

which is why the non-stick coating had been scraped off - someone had obviously put it down too heavily or leant on it and the bottom had warped slightly so that the paddle scraped the tin. I just pushed/bent the tin back as all was well again.

The paddle doesnt make too much of a hole in the loaf so that when slicing you can use most of the bread. Slicing is top-down, you put the loaf on its side so the paddle-hole is at an end, but not an issue. The bake puts a nice even brown all over the loaf so that there are no parts browner or lighter than others.

Its just a good bread maker for quite small loaves - makes loaves about 7-8 slices in size which is perfect for a couple. Makes a decent loaf. Bread tin could be a bit sturdier but it really isnt a major issue

Good – I am very glad I purchased this item and would recommend it to those who cook bread regularly, but not often. It is approved by the celiac association, although… Read more

I have not tried making gluten free bread yet. I have made spelt (wheat free) bread and it turned out great. Have made about 10 loaves and all have been edible.

Also easy to clean, with removable lid and bread pan. Bread slicer that comes with it free is very handy. Beeps loadly a few times during the sessions, which can be annoying if you put it on overnight.

Loaves are a bit wide - so if you slice two slices of bread you are probably eating three normal size pieces.

Good – Nothing beats fresh bread every day. The price is right and the quality of the bread is consistantly wonderful. would be worth it. We were lucky enough to find one in excellent condition at a garage sale for $15 so thought we would try it and we couldn't be happier! Great loaf size, easy to clean and cheap. The settings are easy to understand and it consistently cooks beautifully every single time. The crust is light and crispy when toasted and is very moreish. After having one we would buy the same again and pay full price! It can be a little noisy when it's in the kneading stage (but then again, they may all make this sound, I haven't had another so have no comparison).

Excellent – I did not use a prebake bread. I make sure I soaked the sugar yeast and warm water for ten mins before I added the salt and flour ....... and what a great result. Far better than the breadmaker I had a few years ago. This is one happy purchaser Brilliant machine. Correct size , love the loaf being verticle. Mixes the dough well . Very little noise when kneading.

the wholemeal and from the word go never a bad loaf! Then we got the Laucke multigrain mix and it was even better- soft fluffy and all crunchy on the outside. Saves so much money buying bread- I do 2-3 loaves a week. haven't tried the white again and won't until I find a properly measured recipe. The small size is perfect for 2 of us and we always have fresh bread. Doesn't have the overnight cook function. Would be great to wake up to fresh bread. But we chose it for its size so we can't complain. It's just that I make it after work and have to wait up until 10-11pm to get it out. If you leave it in the breadmaker it sweats and loses the crunch you want.

Its a little noisy at first when its mixing but that lasts for 25 minutes or so and then you hardly hear a peep out of it till its done. It does take 3 hours to make a loaf, so you need to be prepared. I can see how a programmable model can be a benefit. I've seen some machines with a rapid bake, but I don't know if the results are as good with such a quick bake. I've also made pizza dough a few times with this machine as well and that was really good too.

I've just bought a Breville Ultimate Bakers Oven because we need a bigger loaf, so I'm hoping that will work just as well as this one. I'm going to try out the timer function and see if I can have bread ready for breakfast in the morning. I'm giving this one to my mum as I've converted her to breadmakers too. I've never had a bad loaf out of it. Every one that I've put through has turned out perfect, I've used premixes but normally start from scratch using the recipe from the book. It makes a small loaf, and we eat a lot of bread.

OK – The unknown reviewer from 24 July 2008 does not understand the principles and processes of breadmaking, and clearly doesn't understand how the breadmaker works. A breadmaker with no kneading paddle is like a car without an engine! The fact that his/her bread turned out flat is due to problems with the recipe/ingredients used, not the breadmaker. Nice and easy to use. Could do with a 1kg capacity.

very well, but this machine excels at it. It would be better if it had a preset timer function, and I would have liked a crust setting to allow for different crusts (light, med, dark, etc). But I suppose I shouldn't expect too many features for this budget price. It's also very handy for making pizza dough, hot cross bun dough, and I even made some bread rolls. I recommend this model for anyone who likes small loaves of fresh, tasty bread. Makes a small loaf, which is what I want. Could do with a crust setting, and a preset timer

Excellent – This is a basic small-loaf breadmaker. It does everything intended. I've had mine for over a year, using it once of twice a week. Works fine - no problems at all. I'm surprised other reviewers were disappointed it doesn't have a timer. Silly them - it doesn't offer a timer! If you wanted a timer you should have bought a more expensive model that says 'timer' on the carton. Simple, basic breadmaker. Nothing to dislike.
