TomTom GO 1050 Australia

Faulty units – Don't buy a TomTom, These units have battery problems which are well documented and even getting a replacement unit will fail in a short time. Just do a google search. I took my unit back and it was replaced but that failed within a few weeks. In short - buy a Garmin. Looks good Battery problems that TomTom know about.
Tomtom 1050 was terrible – We paid top dollar for this shite - never again. From Dick Smith. When the battery died after a few weeks we returned it and waited months for it to be "repaired" After months they gave us a 'new' one - it too is rubbish! The battery will not charge/hold charge and the machine is useless as it must always be plugged in, and takes ages to fire up Buy another brand - not tomtom from dickdick
Excellent – I still really like my GO 1050 and would not have anything else, i am prepared to wait for the bugs ironed out and it will be 100%. I have to say, tomtom have been good with their after sales service as i bought one first and plugged it into my computer as instructed by the installation guide and after it deleted my alerts i rang tomtom and they gave me a reference number to go back to the store and exchange my devise.
Hope this helps prospective buyers. This GPS is quality...In it build, its design and magnetic mount system. I have had many other brands and apart from the Garmin ( which feels just as good as the GO 1050) there is no other. The menu and phone connection i find excellent. I am totally happy with the gps. There are problems at the moment.
1) Do not connect your new GO 1050 to the internet as stated otherwise you will loose your pre loaded speed camera alerts.
2) Its obvious that tomtom released this a bit early(maybe for Christmas)
3) You have to not plug your tomtom into your computer and receive the latest map to avoid loosing speed and red light camera alerts before you call their customer service number to find out if the problem has been fixed.
My wife and I purchased a GO1000 and a GO1050 when we replaced our cars last year. In that time we have both returned our respective units for the 2nd time due to battery failure after 2-3months. The device just won't hold the charge and when you take it out of the cradle it just shuts down.
Not only do I have to sent them back, we have both each had to wait over a month to get them back and there is no communication with TomTom about the status. If the next one fails, I'll be demanding a full refund.
When it works - its not bad and as good as the Garmin I had before. The only reason i bought it was to provide a backup devise for my wife as she connect her phone to it. When I talk to her I must say I'm not a big fan of the quality of the conversation
I suspect its just been a bad battery run, but Tomtom are crap at customer service and communication
Looks like this is the number one complaint! My battery died within 2 months. I have found a source on the net and replaced it myself. The Navman unit I bought 2 years ago is absolutely great, just doesn't have all the latest features and screen quality.

I had a similar experience at JB Hi Fi. I was silly enough to buy two of these as Xmas presents, supposedly with lifetime map upgrades. The site won't upgrade the maps and it is virtually impossible to contact Tomtom to complain. Once bitten etc. wont buy their rubbish again!
