TomTom XL 340

Software Error? Send the route checkers out again to check the routes on Maroondah Highway – I have had this unit for about 3 years now. It has enabled me to almost completely discard my Melways. There two places in Chirnside Park Vic, almost next door to each other on Maroondah Highway, where it gets completely confused. For one, TomTom takes me to a location in an adjacent suburb, only half way towards the right destination. For the other it takes me to different wrong location, this time about 5 Km in the opposite direction! i.e. some 14 km from where it should be!
Apart from that, it has performed flawlessly for all other locations I have wanted to go. Good loud volume for my deaf old ears Occasional failure to find the place I want to go
Expected better from this brand – Did a lot of research before purchasing this model about 18 months ago. TomTom seemed to be the dominating brand at the time. From the start, it has struggled to pick up GPS satellites, sometimes taking up to 4 minutes (not helpful if you are lost and need directions immediately). Even software updates didn't help. The touch screen alternates between being overly sensitive and not picking up touch at all. Some of the methods/menus for finding particular locations are confusing and not particularly helpful or intuitive.
It's still useable, but next time I look for a GPS, it won't be a TomTom. Good size, IQ feature is pretty accurate Struggles to locate GPS satellites, touch screen not consistent.
Good – I've used this machine for 3 vacations and have been very happy with it. The re-calculation of route if a turn is missed has not been an issue with me. I like the fact that I can add my own 3rd party POIs easily. The newer Tomtom models have had this feature killed by Tomtom. I update the machine regularly with the Tomtom Home program which does a very good job.
There has been an issue with this machine where it will turn ON by itself once a week at the exact same time, but have worked around the problem by leaving in in a visible place that it will be noticed. This is not an issue if you are using it on a trip. The problem is well documented on the internet buy no fix forthcoming from Tomtom. Price, clarity of the sound, screen image quality, build quality, windscreen mount all very good Don't like the fact that Tomtom has not issued a fix for the 'turning on by itself' problem. Lots of people reporting this problem on the internet.
Good – I have enjoyed using my TomTom over the last few months - it has generally been really handy and easy to use. Occasionally it can get confusing as to which turn to take, however as long as you look at the st name you are pretty right. I do find that if you make the wrong turn the TomTom takes a long while to recalculate an alternative route - this was a bit stressful in city driving! Overall a great nav system with a large screen - would definately buy again. Nice big screen, loud volume, easy to understand voices. Touch screen is very easy to use Can be a bit confusing in city driving as takes a while to catch up when it has to recalculate
