Major faults – Bought the EF1000IS believed it to be the top of the line in generaters with the top of the line price tag, fitted a hour meter electronic to keep track of oil changes. Now the warranty was a difficult so it went it recycling the unit itself ran well but with a certain vibration at a particular rpm, and the fuel tap poor quality shortly after 300 hours it stopped checking the oil it was overflowing with a mixture of oil and fuel redone the oil same problem fuel in the sump overflowing the fuel tap hopeless and fuel pressurising back through the engine major fault Would I buy a Yamaha again NO
Purchased in for $1,800.
Not worth the price – The carburettor has foulded up twice now causing the generator to run erratically, and is costly to get a dealer to fix. Apparently this is an ongoing problem with these generators. Being a brand name and costing $$$ doesn't guarantee quality anymore. Also getting parts for a Yamaha generator in Australia is not straightforward, and a 4-6 week for parts to come from Japan is ridiculous.
Yamaha Generator – I was the proud owner of a Yamaha EF1000IS generator. It was going very well until until one morning I went to start it, it started but the motor was reeving & there was no output. Turns out the control unit is buggered & the cost to buy a new one is $1260.00. This is absolute ripoff. Almost the cost of new generator. I would never purchase a new Yamaha again & will go with Honda. My advice would be if you have a Yamaha sell it while its still going& buy a Honda. Mine was only 6 years old and had very low hours. They are good while they're going but very bad if it breaks down.

"Gunk" in air vent tube and air filter box – In first year of EF1000iS use the carburetor inlet has fouled up 3 times with black particles in oily solution coming from the air vent tube. First two cleans were by mechanics from shop from where it was bought. Third was by me because it is becoming expensive! The generator is run as a backup for an old Honda in a clean generator shed: has had routine first oil changes twice in first year, plug looks clean, air filter is clean. Where is the dirt coming from via the air vent tube? Should his be a warranty claim? No other small engine has behaved like this here: off grid solar remote power supply. Otherwise it works well and will run a washing machine and fridge most days will charging deep cycle 12 Volt batteries producing 750 Watts on average.

Yamaha 1000is is tops! – This Yammie is terrific.....lightweight, quiet, reliable. Perfect for charging your caravan batteries. A great back up for the solar, when off grid camping for a week or longer in overcast weather. Very happy with it, no issues at all. Runs on the smell of an oily rag too!
Purchased in for $775.
