Yamaha MCR-040

Yamaha on a winner – Small compact, speakers wire connected so one can add more speakers if desired, yes the remote looks a little on the cheap side, but its good clarity for sound, packs a little punch for such a small unit, if purchasing new bargain with harvey norman stores 330 dollars, not real cheap but its got 5 stars from many customers, oh yamaha made in malaysia thats a surprise.. ..

Excellent small sound system – I bought this because I wanted a system that had bluetooth, an iPod dock and a CD player, so I could play music from all my sources. I previously had an old-ish Bose sound dock which was great, but I found it frustrating that it had no bluetooth functionality, and it meant I never played CDs. This system is very easy to use, attractively designed, and the sound quality is great, particularly given its size.
Small compact system with excellent sound quality – I purchased this product a few months ago. I purchased it mainly for the digital radio and to play music from an mp3 device. It also has a cd player. The sound quality of the system is excellent and it's easy to operate. The remote appears somewhat cheap and flimsy but, although small, it is well laid out and uncluttered and works well. Although it was a bit on the expensive side for this type of unit, I can't really fault any aspect of it's design and performance. It also looks great and comes in a multitude of different colours. Overall, I am very happy with this purchase. Sound quality A bit pricey
One word... amazing! – My husband and I have been looking for a micro system for quite some time now as our Sharp system broke down. We brought home a few systems to try out but were not happy with the sound. We came across this Yamaha system and at first were a bit skeptical because of the total watts (30w) Wow were we ever shocked. This beast delivers! We are beyond impressed. The sound is so crisp. Its hard to believe that this little unit can produce such amazing sound. The unit itself is very simple looking, easy to put together and fits nicely on a shelf. I would without a doubt recommend this Micro system. Money well spent and there is nothing more theraputic than music. Great job Yamaha!!! The sound
A good piece of kit - highly recommended! – I bought this from The Good Guys Midland for $396 in October 2011. I figured the price was kinda expensive so I went next door to JB Hifi - and theirs was about $80 dearer(!), so I went back to TGG and put down a deposit. (The brand name, compactness, wake timer, and the inclusion of the DAB tuner sealed the deal!). Very good, if not seriously impressive sound output. Don't be put off by the advertised (and very honest) "15W per channel" claim by Yamaha, this thing does get quite loud and sound quality does not suffer one iota at the top end. I had another mini Hifi that claimed to put out 600W through the speakers, but that is just ridiculous as the total power rating of the set was only 125W! And the "600W" unit was not quite as loud as this Yamaha I might add...
Has a good DAB tuner, with strong reception. It tunes in quickly, and on the display options, shows you everything you want to know about the station it's tuned in to. And it automatically sets the onboard clock when tuned to any station.
Same can't be said about the USB player, it shows the song and artist info, but not the bitrate of the media. Not essential, but it would be nice to have. Contrary to other reviews of this unit, this plays low bitrate Mp3's well, with compression artefacts afraid to show their ugly heads.
Also contrary to some reviews I've seen, this unit has a decent LED display, it shows quite enough. For the price I am happy with what I paid - by a mile!
The only caveat (if you can call it that) of this unit is the remote. The button layout is arbitrarily arranged. may take the average user a fair while to get used to it.
Thanks to the brand name, this unit should have decent resale value. Onboard DAB, small size, well designed, reasonable price. Can't tweak the sound enough for my tastes. Remote needs getting used to.
OP here. Addendum; Re: Timer - If you have a bumper collection of songs (on a USB drive for example) you can adjust which song to play from. Still a bit of a pain...another thing about the timer, you have to set it to 'on' for every time you want it to turn on. It won't automatically turn on the same time every day unless you set it. Minor quibble but I would like something to be turning on and playing and turning off again like someone's home as a deterrent (to potential house thieves?).

Hello...OP here. I have found a ridiculous design caveat with this unit, although it has a good shuffle function with CD/USB, you cannot make this MCR040 turn on from a timer setting with the shuffle turned on. Which means if you have a bumper Mp3 collection it will play from the start everytime with the timer. I think this sucks!
