AAMI worst of the worst – AAMI is a disgrace. Do not under any circumstances obtain a policy through this organisation as you will not realise any level of satisfaction should you ever have to make a claim. Something to also take into consideration is that AAMI is underwritten by Suncorp so it would be my submission that both are cut from the cloth. If you wish to read on I will detail my AAMI claim experience to you.

In November of 2012 QLD was hit by a series of severe storms resulting in flooding. Damage to property in the state was significant both from the storm rains and winds. Our property in Brisbane was affected in that water had made its way onto the ceiling of our laundry through the upper floor, this water caused damage to the plasterboard and provided a significant leak each subsequent time it rained. We contacted AAMI the following week and made a claim, to their credit they sent out a building service provider (Integra) to assess the damage and provide a report. Integra provided a quote to both AAMI and us to repair the damage in quote format for $4726.35. AAMI approved this work and Integra went to work. The work provided for the aforementioned total was nothing more than replacing a bit of plasterboard and re-painting, they did nothing to address the damage caused to the building by the storm leaving the same area vulnerable should another storm occur. When I put this very question to them they basically said it was not their problem and walked away from.

In January 2013, Australia Day weekend, QLD was again struck by severe thunderstorms and sure enough the same area was affected although it was made significantly worse by the very poor efforts of Integra Building Services to the point that the ceiling collapsed. This storm also affected a second area of our home but the damage was exactly as previously described. We again contacted AAMI and made a claim, they send out a different building service provider (Unique Building Services) who sent out an assessor. This bloke would have been in his early 20's and had less than no clue, he sent in a report to AAMI that basically said they will put up some plaster board and paint it, but this one did say that UBS would not repair the area above and that we would have to repair that at our own expense before they would attend.

In is now the middle of May 2013 and I have been in contact with AAMI on a weekly basis since January and we are yet to have a decision made on what they will or won't cover. AAMI have offered us a cash settlement amount of $1500 for the first area mentioned, this was a quote provided by Intregra. Remembering that the first quote they sent to us was for more than three times that amount to do what they had previously done. The second area damaged by the storm is three times that size. In the mean time I have engaged my own builder to fix the damage and repair the non-existent workmanship done by AAMI's building service provider Integra. The total repair costs will probably be in the order of 15k and I have absolutely zero confidence that AAMI will reimburse us any monies spent. The policy document is not worth the paper is is printed on.

I concure absolutely with the previous reviewer in that you will never speak with the same person twice, each time you call the person you speak to will ask to put you on hold will they review the file (10min to over an hour) at the end of which they will tell you that they can not help you and that they will transfer you to a case manager, again this person will want to "review your file" at the end of which they will tell you that they are waiting on a report that is never coming.

We have been through an endless round of dispute resolutions with this corrupt company with, you guessed it, no resolution. Something to note here is that each time you lodge a complaint your claim is out on hold. Overall an awful experience and one that I would not wish on any other honest consumer. BEWARE AAMI IS NOT TRUSTWORTHY. As soon as this saga is behind us we will be moving to another insurance company but my confidence in any of them has been considerably shaken and may never fully return.
