15 years says it all :) – If I think about it! The water spray function stopped working a few years back but no big deal, sole plate still good condition and every other function still worked. Used it in the morning and in the evening it wouldn't heat up. Can't complain about the iron but I never like replacing anything either. Thanks Sunbeam. Show details
Good iron, but spits water ! – The small hole on the lid where you fill the iron with water constantly spits water when ironing. Rang Sunbeam, they sent a replacement lid, still spitting water. Rang Sunbeam again, where they said I could try putting tape to cover the hole. The tape stop the spitting of water when ironing, but stop air entering the water tank, thus the iron did… Read more
not steam when ironing. I am now using my older Sunbeam iron, which does not have the small hole on the lid and having no problems with water leaking/spitting.
Constant spitting of water!
Expensive Junk – My wife bought this fairly expensive unit nearly 3 years ago. Until then it was the most expensive iron she had ever bought, Unfortunately, she dallied for a while and kept using her old one for about six months, before using this unit. She had problems with water leaking, and found the iron too light to get the creases out well. So she kept… Read more
reverting to her old iron, only making occasional use of the new one.
Then one day, just after the warranty had expired, the unit's automatic cut-off went into effect and turned the iron off. The iron then stopped heating up ever again. When plugged in, the light comes on - there is obviously power there, but the iron just stays cold.
My wife was thinking of trying to have it fixed, till she read the other reviews here. Instead, why throw good money after bad? It's going into the bin.
After buying Sunbeams all her life, my wife says she will never buy a Sunbeam again. Nothing. It leaked. it was too light to do the job properly. It stopped working.
Terrible – I'm totally sworn off Sunbeam irons after using them for 33 years and my mother only ever bought Sunbeam before that. This was a waste of money... typical Chinese-made crap. Decided not to claim the warranty as they'll just give me another one. Planning on buying a different brand. spits water, sounds like popcorn in a microwave, feels cheap and nasty.
Terrible – Very poor quality product, this is the second of these irons I have had as the first one failed while under 2year warranty, and now the replacement has gone exactly the same way - leaking constantly till it no longer worked. I have bought Sunbeam irons all of my married life (37years), but I won't be buying another one! Lighweight, heated… Read more
quickly, maintained heat. Everything else, leaked water continually, beeped in the ironong position while ironing.Just stopped working.
Terrible – I feel obliged to write and record my experiences after reading some of the reviews- especially the one where the user 'bangs' the iron!!! My iron never worked correctly- it leaked constantly and the thermostat took a long time to adjust but I just put up with it. One day the thermostat was running particularly hot and I turned the iron right… Read more
down in order to iron jeans etc. I left the room to hang up some ironing and when I came back I ran the iron over the ironing board cover to see how hot it was running. It scorched through the ironing board cover and then I realized what I thought was steam was actually smoke. Within 30 seconds my house was full of smoke and I had to get a fire blanket to pick the iron up and take it outside. The whole inside of the iron was completely destroyed.
Sunbeam have investigated my iron and found that there is a fault with the thermostat which has caused contacts within the iron to fuse together thereby catching on fire. I was offered a replacement iron as it was within warranty which I have declined for obvious reasons. They originally offered me my money back but that was later retracted and a depreciated amount of $42.84 for a $119.00 has been offered. I have now referred this on to Consumer Affairs.
I urge everyone to have your iron checked out. I can hardly bear to think what may have happened if I had not been the one using the iron at the time of the incident.
I would love to include my photos but there is no capacity on this page!!! Long cord
Terrible – I have owned sunbeam irons for over 32 years and have always been satisfied with them. Last year I brought another of this same brand. After 3 months of spitting water out the little hole and slowly loosing steam and heat took it back and was replace with the same iron. This iron is spitting too and has lost steam also. For 2and a half hours… Read more
ironing I could use up to nearly 6 cups of water or more and now I am flat out using 2 cups for the same amount of time. I took out an extra years warranty when I brought the 1st iron and am thinking of taking this one back again as it is starting to loose heat too. I sure won't be buying another sunbeam until they make it better and also telling others not to buy it either. it makes me so mad ironing now. The automatic shut off alarm, long cord, beautiful finish on the bottom and its weight. The stupid dumb hole they put in the lid where you fill the iron with water causing water to spit out on clothes all the time.
Excellent – Iron was quite heavy to use, kept having a dummy spit, (water leaking out) finally the element for water heating went one month after warranty expired. Having read other reviews I'm not the only one with this problem. Sunbeam's, mass Chinese cheap production, has a lot to answer for. I used to always buy Sunbeam products and have had problems with… Read more
3 other new produts of their's so have now sworn off their products. Have just purcheased the Philips Pressure Steam iron C840, around $400, but brilliant to use and terrific results, plus NO leaking. It was OK in the beginning
Good – This is a great iron, I recommend it. It heats up quickly, it's light and easy to use. This iron has now been upgraded to the SR5990, which I have just purchased. Heats up quickly, it's light, easy to use. Nice steam and water shot action. The auto cut-off and beeping to remind me that it is on is a great feature. I wasn't a heavy user of the… Read more
iron so was a bit disappointed that it lasted only 4 years.
Water tends to leak out of it when it is on a lower heat setting, which is easily solved by turning the temperature up.
Good – This was a great iron for the first four years, until it decided to die one day. I was a bit disappointed that it did not last longer, seeing as it was not the cheapest iron on the market. It worked really well while it was alive though! This was a great iron - auto off switch, good soleplate that is scratch resistant etc. It worked really well… Read more
for the first four years. The only disappointing thing about this iron is that after four years, it just stopped working one day. It just does not switch on - you have to hit it to get it working, if it does at all.
OK – It is a heavy iron which I prefer but some people may not. Every time you use the iron and change the temperature setting you need to try and find a setting for the steam which won't leak. This isn't an exact art and you will have leaking over several items that you are ironing. I like the automatic shut off for the rare occasion that you… Read more
forget to turn the iron off. Overall it's not a bad iron but I'm sure there are better ones on the market. Automatic shut off Leaks when you put the steam setting to high
Bad – I won't be buying another Sunbeam - problems right from the start with this model. The leaking is obviously a design fault. Lightweight, auto switch off. Has leaked from day 1 on low settings. I've had it for about 3 years and needs to be replaced as it is not heating up. Cheaper to buy a new iron than have it repaired. Having to hit it to get it working and water is leaking out all over the ironing board.

Know better, choose better.
Good – I cant complain really except for: My last iron was super quiet when the thermostat tripped in & out. Im not sure if i have a faulty one or not. Otherwise it performs well on denim and business shirts (thats all ive ironed so far). The alarm/auto cut-off works well. No more leaving the iron on all day for me :) Would I buy another.. hmmm not… Read more
sure. the 'shorting' noise of the thermostat is too off-putting for my likeing. Otherwise its a high quality solid build unit with a good warranty. At 2400watts its got mega heat.
All spelling mistakes are on purpose. I hope someone finds this useful. Easy to use, works well. I cant really complain. My old iron was from the stone age. The alarm works a treat. When the thermostat trips in & out it sounds like it's shorting out. Very disconcerting.
Excellent – I have the newer model of this iron, the 5990, and I just love it. The weight doesn't feel flimsy in my hand, which I like. The steam output is great for ironing jeans and heavier fabrics. The powerful 2400w cuts ironing time and effort in half. I've always been a Sunbeam user and after using this iron I wouldn't go for any other. The 5990 does… Read more
use more water than usual but that is a side effect of the steam output, which I don't mind Heavy duty steam action, vertical steam, long swivel cord, the weight (not flimsy), powerful
Excellent – I did stray to another brand for a few years, but Sunbeam you've done it again - this is a great iron and I'm really glad I returned to this brand of iron. Good value for the money as it delivers. Highly recommend this iron. Heats up quickly and my ironing time has been literally cut in half because of the excellent hot 2400 watts and great… Read more
'steaming ability/quality' of this iron. Not too heavy to hold even when it is filled with water. The resilium plate does not scratch, even when you accidentally iron over those steel rivets on your jeans. Love the auto cut off/alarm! Nothing, it is excellent.
Excellent – Overall I like this iron and am now on my third one, now called ultura 90 instead of 5990. It was a mothers day present although I was originally given the new Accura top of the range, it spat water the temp buttons were in a poor position and changed temp whenever I put my hand on the iron handle, took it back after 4 days and replaced it with… Read more
this model again. My family think I am boring for choosong the same iron yet again but I think it is the best in the Sunbeam range and will continue to choose it unless they stop making it. A really good iron to use, not too heavy and has a really good shot of steam. Just purchased a new model and it has a small hole in the cover where you fill the water tank, have found some water spits out of here at high temperature ironing, high cotton setting upwards.
Good – I have the newer model of this iron, the 5990, and I just love it. The weight is more than adequate for the required task. Supplies more than enough steam for demin. Being 2400watts, ironing is cut by half. This model does use a large amount of water in relation to the steam provided but has a large reservoir to compensate. A very light and simple… Read more
iron with very easy to use controls. It also has a very long cord. The 5990 gives of a very noisy spluttering sound when placed in the upright position. The can be very concerting when used for the first time.
