You do need to press the power button after every time you empty the water tank or have a power outage so you can't set it to turn on/off via a timer. However, there are some online reviews in which people have used paper/plastic to keep the power button pressed down in order for it to work with a timer.

The machine has removable filters - I've owned mine for several years and have only had to regularly clean the dust filter and air quality sensor so I'm guessing the air quality within my home isn't so bad to need to replace the carbon or HEPA filters.
