3M Scotch Extreme Fasteners is a game changer with a couple of weaknesses – Like most, I am used to hooks and loops kind of velcro, where one side is hooks, and another side is fabric loops. Some are made real strong, while others are weak, especially when hooks side starts to fill with hairs and dirt making it ineffective. When attached, they tend to wiggle which is both a good thing and a bad thing. Good in that this wiggle gives it more resilience. Bad if your application demands precision and no movements. Sometimes the hooks fall off readily so effectiveness falls off steadily and quickly.

This Scotch Extreme Fasteners from 3M are also called mushroom fasteners has tiny mushroom shapes instead of hooks. Both sides are identical so there is no need to remember which side to use. They attach precisely without any play. They do not trap dirt and hair nearly as easy as standard hooks, and cleans more easily when they do get filled with dirt.

Where this extreme fasteners fails is the adhesive backing. It uses the 3M VHB double sided tape which works awesome on perfectly clean, shiny surfaces, but not well on porous surfaces. The clear backing is not nearly as forgiving as foam type tape. It is quite rigid too, so it doesn’t work well on anything uneven or not flat.

It is significantly more expensive than standard hooks and loops velcro but for the right application, the difference is day and night, able to carry a lot of load and inspires confidence.
