If I Can Do It So Can You – Well, I have to say ,I took this on and thought if everything goes awry I can pay someone to finish the job. As it turned out despite my age , my sore back and my breathing problem I completed the job by myself. It took me a day of stop starting but I think if you are younger you should be able to do this in half the time. I removed my Merlin and… Read more
threw it outside. I then realised that the professionals who had fitted my first opener about 25 years ago had done a botched job and there was no way I could use their anchor points it was just horrible. Spending the first hours fitting timber bracing and fixing the connection to the actual door I started work. To cut a long story short I got it fitted and better than the so called professionals. The door is a belt drive but it also comes with a chain drive. Some sellers don't charge you extra for the belt drive and others will charge you an extra $50.00 so do your research .
The main problems is in the fitting and adjustments because the manual does not clearly explain and assumes you have done it before . Three controllers were easy to program and once I had found out how to tighten the belt and engage the sled I was able to finalise my fitting and adjustments and finish .
The door works smoothly and is quiet . All controls worked fine accept I had to make some minor adjustments after a few days use . In my photos you will see the bracing I had to fit and you will see what the belt looks like when it's not adjusted . It's a bit hit and miss and the manual does not contain some of the information that you need .
Now the first thing to do is get rid of the festoon bulb supplied in the light. It's a shocker and is not bright . I hunted around and found two LED bulbs that are white light and up to four times more powerful. I checked them for heat as they have a heat sink on the back but I found even with the diffuser in place there is not a lot of heat.
All in all , you should be able to fit this in half the time I took . It came with a seven year warranty and I have to say I have no other complaints, it works, its quiet and the Wireless range is very good. You can buy a heap of accessories and you can use an app on your smartphone with some of these extras.
You can see in one of the photos that the belt needs adjusting as it is bunching in the rail and another photo where I have made the adjustment to tighten the belt.
Oh and I did remove the lock plate on the rail .I found the sled picked this up even though it was bolted tight and dragged it up the rail and stopped the door from operating.
