Back to Bed Coconut Fibre Futon

We ordered a mattress from Back to Bed in early July 2025. At first we were a little worried because there was no communication from the time we ordered and paid for our mattress and when they said it would be delivered. We thought we'd been scammed. Then we read a mix of reviews and got more worried so I rang them. They were inundated with orders and gave us a new timeframe for delivery. I realised they were a small family run in-house business. The mattress arrived on time. Don't expect a conventional mattress. It comes folded and wrapped. I was worried that it wouldn't be better than our previous very expensive memory foam posturedic mattress. I went for a firm mattress with all natural fibres including wool cotton and a layer of coconut fibre to avoid allergies. The company proved to be trustworthy. They delivered what they said they would. They didn't over or under promise. I received an all natural firm mattress but not so firm it feels like I am sleeping on the floor. I love my new mattress. For the past 4 weeks I have slept exceptionally well. I no longer overheat in bed. I love the firmness with enough softness to feel comfortable. I love going to bed knowing I will have a good night sleep. Previously even with my posturedic bed I'd sleep on the floor to ease discomfort. I haven't done that since getting this mattress. Good quality – I ordered this one: No.1 Combination Natural Mattress (Premium Surrounding Airflow Wool (500 gsm), Thick Australian Cotton, 10 cm Natural Latex and Coconut Fibre core) Took over a month to arrive but was worth the wait. Very well made mattress - cushy with a supportive centre. It was softer than I expected but with a firm and well supported core, would work well for side-sleepers. My partner who prefers a softer mattress loves it. I sleep best on a thin mat on the floor so if I had to choose again I'd go with less padding, maybe thinner cotton/ wool and more coconut core. This is one of the most comfortable mattresses I've ever owned.

Way too hard – My previous mattress was a wool futon from Futon Warehouse which had been very comfortable and lasted about 10 years. This one is a wool latex and coconut fibre from Back to Bed. From day 1 it was uncomfortably hard but I thought it might soften up after a few weeks. I called up Back to Bed about it, but was not offered a refund. It's been many months now and hasn't softened up at all. I often wake up with sore ribs and hips( I weigh 56kg). Now have been sick for the past 3 days and am not sure what's worse: the discomfort of being sick or the discomfort of having to lie on this mattress for so many hours. Unless you prefer a super-hard no-give mattress stay away from this one.

Restless, painful experience – I am a major fan of futons and had my last queen sized futon for 20 years. After reading many positive reviews on the shop and having shopped around, I settled for the King sized futon with coconut fibre and even bought a single for my son. The futon was great initially, now I have back and neck pain. The pain starts soon after I lay down and if I ignore I can manage a few hours, but would wake feeling worse. My son is 4 and he sleeps with me. A couple of months ago, he started to either sleep on the doona or his pillow. It has been months now and I have no choice but to reluctantly give up and search for another bed.

It really is silly to have tolerated the pain and discomfort for so long and I'm saddened by the thought of having to throw it out (I do not want to donate it as nobody should go through the discomfort and pain).
