Bondall Granite & Marble Sealer
Verified1 review
Did not work at all! – I recently had a new granite bench top installed. The granite is grey and white in colour. I had to seal it myself as it was not done before installation. I went to Bunnings and purchased Bondall tileguard granite and marble sealer. It came in a big tin. I followed the instructions to a tee. I applied the sealer 3 times leaving the required amount of time (15-20 min) between each of application. If anything I applied additional coats as I have lighter granite. It's a water based sealer that suggests you apply via a paint brush brush. I let the benchtop dry for 24hrs+ before using my kitchen or sinks. I then performed the water test, the water did bead ontop but also you could see immediately a dark water stain soaking in within a minute. So I did 3 more coats as per instructions but with a rag this time until the tin was empty. I followed the same steps, waited gave it a day or so the water test - water still soaked through immediately! After now 5 coats!!!
Not many people (including the stone sellers) know the difference with sealers or can advise you if you are doing right thing. We were told by everyone we were paranoid and to leave it. I could tell something was wrong. Luckily I stuck to my guns and I bought the more expensive sealer from the stone warehouse. This is a proper sealer for natural stone and it is a thinner not water based. Straight away I could see the difference. I did 4 more coats with this until the stone wouldnt take on anymore. I gave it a good few days to absorb. My stone is now staying warerproof for over 30mins (maybe more I havent left it any longer).
Use the right stuff. The stone factory's will have the proper stuff. Don't go cheap! It isnt all the same like we were initially told. Do the water test and no you shouldnt see patches. Water should bead for up to 30mins. People will tell you water is not meant to be completely beading, that it isn't waterproof and that some water will soak - well it shouldnt! My now doesn't and I have light granite. Use the right stuff an coat it 3+ times with a rag and it will not water stain at all within 20-30mins. If it does it is the sealer, get a better product. Yes you can seal it numerous times there's no harm, after a while it just won't take meaning it's good to go.
