Dunstan Baby Language

Not essential, but well worth it – I hadn't spent much time around newborns before my son was born so this gave me a little "heads up" before he arrived. I am thankful I had purchased this item, because his consistent "hungry" cry quickly help identify a medical problem that, without treatment, was causing him to slowly starve. Yes, this problem would have been discovered anyway,… Read more
but with Dunstan I believe it was discovered much earlier.
I highly recommend it. This isn't an essential item for a new mum but it is really a very good one. Fantastic for learning to distinguish different cries so they never turn into screams! Bit expensive, lots of filler
Bad – I purchased this before my baby was born as a friend had recommended it. I thought I was going to be a pro at recognising a cry and fulfilling his needs. My son musn't have watched it because he didn't make any of these specific sounds when he cried, but at least I had a good checklist of things to do whenever he did cry. Good tips & steps on how… Read more
to deal with baby crying, things to check and do. Particularly signs of tiredness, burping & wind. I couldn't recognise the cries / distinguish these specific cries from my baby. Maybe I just don't have the ear for it, but it didn't help me or my husband pick out specific cries from our baby.
OK – We bought this before our first child was born as we were clueless when it comes to kids (at the time). I did find that it did actually help us distinguish some of the cries, but don't kid yourself, it's not the be all and end all guides to understanding your child's cry. The different example of certain baby cries were helpful. It was drawn out a… Read more
lot which made it a little tedious to watch. At the end of the day though, we did find it did help us to a certain level. I don't know if it's really worth the cost, but if you can afford it and don't expect too much it is helpful. Gives some good tips of what to look out for in crying Very simplistic to the point it's a bit insulting. Could have been made into one disc with the information. A little pricey for what it is.
Good – i think the perfect time to watch this is as soon as you get home from the hospital. it was incredibly useful and i would highly recommend it to all mums and dads. however, i found that my son's cry changed around 7 weeks and found that the sounds didn't really apply as much anymore. I watched this at a friend's place before my son was born and… Read more
tried to learn it, which wasn't really that helpful as i had forgotten it by then. i revisited it when my baby was about 3 weeks when i was really struggling with the cries my baby was making, and it was godsend! i felt so much more confident being able to work out what my baby wants and my stress levels was so much lower! The best thing was the examples of real babies making those cries- so helpful! Expensive, and it doesn't need to be on 2 DVD for how short it went for.
Excellent – Best $40 we ever spent. As new parents this dvd installed confidence in us from the beginning. Believe it or not, it actually works! We relied on it for the first 2 months particularly as we were getting to know our baby. I highly recommended it. This really helps distinguish what your baby needs by learning what their cry's mean. It seems so… Read more
simple once you learn the crys. The video is straight forward and gives ample examples of different babies cry's. The poster that is included is stuck on the back of the nursery door and is helpful to look at in the middle of the night when i forget which cry means what! This is also by and Australian Sydney based Mum. We tried to watch this before we had our bubs but all the crying examples installed so much anxiety in us that we had to turn it off! It's not easy to watch as it is repetitive, but i guess it's essential to learn the tricks. We watched it the first day we brought our bubs home.
Good – I wish I had purchased this earlier in my baby's first few weeks instead of around 7 weeks of age, to see if I could have resolved a lot of crying issues earlier on. I was impressed to hear my baby did make the 5 sounds and I felt confident to follow the Dunstan baby language as a guide during these times. I will watch this again when I have a… Read more
second baby. Lots of examples of different babies making the 5 different cry sounds.
Easy to learn, explained very clearly.
I liked the different burping techniques they showed. Not sure why it had to be put on 2 dvds, they are very short dvd's, thus making this a pretty expensive purchase.
OK – This is a pretty good set but is way overpriced. I borrowed it and gained some insight from it but really struggled to figure out which cries my son was doing and it was therefore not very effective for me. It didn't make a large difference to our situation but my husband did feel like he could help out more as he had more of an idea of what our… Read more
son might need. Apparently you can borrow this from some libraries and child health centres so I recommend trying to borrow it instead of buying it. Gives practical advice on how to deal with different problems that cause young babies to cry, can be very effective if you are able to distinguish between your babies cries, can help parents feel like that are able to do something. Is very expensive, despite the many examples of cries, I still really struggled to distinguish between my son's cries, you need to watch it preferable before the baby is born.
Good – I actually found this book and dvd combo pretty useful for my second baby. If you listen hard enough to babies sounds when they cry you can hear the distinct sounds that are promoted within the book. A couple of the sounds are very similar and that makes them difficult to decifer between them but the main sounds/noises were for me as clear as… Read more
day and it was great to be able to understand this and deal with baby accordingly. Might be a good product for parents with unsettled babies to help work out what each cry means. Easy to learn and understand. Some of the sounds that the book/dvd claims babies make are very similar so it is difficult to distinguish between them.
