Elecbrakes Electric Brake Controller Questions & Answers
VerifiedDoes anyone know if it’s okay if my service brake cable is connected to the elecbrake port? I was getting a dodgey connection with my lights so I opened it up and realised the service brake wasn’t connected. I fixed the lights and connected the brakes cable thinking the previous owner just hadn’t done it. But now I’m tracing it comes disconnected by default. Should I go and disconnect it?

Why does my left hand indicator not work, but when the cable is moved it comes on, but will not stay on.
I brought a brand new trailer here in NZ with the Elecbrakes system and it worked ok for about a year and now it keeps loosing connectivity or doesn't connect at all. All electrical connections have been checked and cleaned with still the same result. For the cost of this unit I would definitely look elsewhere.

I am about to hire a camper trailer and will be supplied with an elecbrake unit. I am firstly surprised to hear I need to have my headlights on will I am pulling the camper trailer. It seems very odd that a product has been developed that requires headlights to be on for it to work. Is that correct? I have a 2021 Subaru forester. This has a 7 pin connector. Ready some of the reviews, which were very concerning, seem to suggest compatabilty issues between 12 pin on the van versus 7 pin on the car? Is that correct? As someone simply hiring a van, I am not wanting any issues while on holiday. Your feedback would be appreciated. Thanks.
Hi Denis Brake controllers need a constant power source for opeartion. With Elecbrakes being used on a standard 7 Pin wiring arrangement the headlights provides this. If the vehicle is fitted with a 12 pin setup, or auxiliary power on pin 2 on a 7 pin then headlights need not be on.
We manufacture multiple adapters that will suit the combinations of vehicle/trailerplug/socket available in Australia. All are made to carry the regular operation of the trailers lighting circuits and provide the required power from the vehicle to the Elecbrakes unit.
Does the app have to be open all the time to work? Can you have the app running in the background and make phone calls or maps running as well?
The unit will function without the app open in the foreground, however there is a legal requirement to have access to change the brake settings as required by ADR 38/05
Does the tow vehicle require full headlights on or can it operate with side/tail lights only?
Just have to have power for the unit so side/tailights fine
Can the unit be hard wired to a power source so my car lights don't have to be on?
Good question. Yes, it can - I have a 12 pin set up and it is essentially the same wiring as a 7 pin but with the addition of a power connection. I have a reasonably new car and had to get an auto-elec to wire it up for me - challenge is getting the right power source that does not risk a short on the computer systems. However, it works now just fine and no need to be turning on lights for power, at least in my setup. Hope that helps
