Honda FG110

Far from impressed with this Honda product – Bought this tiller on 24 Nov 2020 and from the word go I had problems. Had to go back to the dealer to get it started for the first time. I use it about three or four times and only for a very short duration each time. In the 15 months I've had it I've only used 3 or 4 tanks of fuel at the most. Was using it just before Christmas and it stopped and I couldn't get it restarted at all. Using same fuel as I use for my Honda whipper snipper and Honda mower, and they were running ok so that wasn't the problem. Checked filters and oil levels and they were ok but the oil looked very greyish. Anyway took it back to the dealers just in case it was a plug and to be checked over. The dealer rang me today to inform me that the motor is stuffed and the piston and ring was damaged. Told them I wasn't impressed and outlined the history of it and they asked if I bought it from them. You only had to look at it to see their business sticker on it. They looked up when I bought it and then said they'd didn't realise it was warranty. Now awaiting a decision on what appears to be an expensive piece of junk. Checked my paperwork and domestic use has a 48 month warranty on it. Far from impressed with this Honda product.
Purchased in at Benalla Mowers & Chainsaws. for $810.
UPDATE:: Dealer called me again today and was a manufacturing defect on hard facing on piston rings. Rather than just replace the motor which might not be available until May, Honda are replacing the entire tiller with a brand new one. Couldn't ask for a better outcome than that.
Piece of absolute CRAP – I purchased a Honda Tiller FG110 on the belief it was a good unit. I've owned it for 3 years and use it once per year along with other hand machinery I have. Outside of the Honda Tiller, all my other small equipment is much older, has had much more use and starts and runs perfectly every time. Unfortunately not the Honda Tiller. The tiller has had less than 3 hours of use in 3 years and already required a full service along with other repairs. The person at the Honda shop states they need to be used more often in order to be more effective and therefore not having the issues I've experienced. I stated to this person, I've owned a cheap 4 stroke lawnmower and it's older, starts every time without any issues and gets treated with the same respect along with all my equipment. After use, it gets cleaned, petrol drained from the tank and kept in a closed shed. I also mentioned regardless of how little I use it, It's absolute rubbish that a small mechanical motor required servicing just after 3 hours!!! This person had no comeback or was unable to justify the facts I provided.
On further investigations and research, I have found through online forums that I'm not alone with my concerns regarding the same model Honda Tiller. The same issues have surfaced and obviously Honda shops and their staff don't mention this prior to purchase?? I gather they rely on buyer beware instead of being upfront.
My area in question is not large, rocky or rugged. It's around 10m x 5m and is flat, has cooch grass and sand. Given the cost of this useless machine and the service/repair rate per hourly use, you're far better off hiring contractors or someone with a decent machine to do the work.
This piece of crap (That's exactly what it is, for what you pay for) is useless and I mentioned this to the person at the Honda shop, given what I've experienced so far. He didn't seem to care about the concerns I presented as he could only say it's not common. I can truly understand why consumers get frustrated especially when a legitimate issue or concern is pushed aside. The conversation never got heated or loud at any time, he was simply made aware of my concerns and it will be my first and last piece of honda I ever buy. DON'T EVER BUY THIS MACHINE...
Purchased in for $700.
Another Good Honda Product – My wife and I grow a small garden of about 20 X 20 feet.It is surrounded by wild raspberry and brambles that send roots underground toward the fertile soil. My wife usually spend hours on end manually tilling the soil to prepare it for seeding and transplanting. A few days ago, I began searching the web for a small mechanical tiller when I happened to come across information about the Honda FG110. I gathered some more information, searched for reviews (which were scarce) and ended up watching a video posted on Utube by an owner. On the video, you could clearly see the operator working the soil in preparation for transplanting. I showed the video to my wife and that was it. The next day, I was at the Honda Power Equipment dealership of our area to have a look at the machine... and buy it. Cost: $489 CAD + taxes. Two years warranty.
It's a small, well designed machine that weighs about 25 pounds. It has removable travel wheels that are easily taken off but the frame is also curved into a carrying handle: it can easily be lifted and transported with one hand. It's a 4 cycles engine of 25cc displacement. There are 4 tines which makes for a working width of 9 inches (or 6 inches if you remove the two outer tines).
Starting the engine is straightforward: you push the priming bulb a few times and, with the choke on, 3-4 pulls on the recoil starter will set if off. While idling the tines don't turn and they begin to rotate when you rev up the engine as the clutch engages.
The machine is easy to maneuver, it will haul itself or bury itself into the soil, depending on the angle you place it and the restraining force your exert. You can pull it backward as the tines move forward and the movements you exert will enable you to place the dirt where you wish. But it tends to spread it a bit. Noise level is quite high at full throttle and I would suggest auditive protectors.
The tines completely grind and break the soil while pulling out undesirable root systems. It took me about half an hour to complete all the work, with pauses to look at what I had done and modify my maneuvering as I familiarized myself with the machine. Definitely a winner like all Honda products we owned or have owned without an issue ever: 6 cars, generators, lawn mower, snow thrower. I recommend this product.

Amazing little tiller! – I had to do some major landscaping at my home. Front yard (100m2) to be reprofiled, sewer lines excavated & repaired, new stormwater drains installed and finally turf to be laid. Rear yard and terraces required similar work. After extensive research, and visiting a couple equipment hire shops, I decided on the Honda FG110. The Honda hype certainly is justified.
This is the first, and currently only piece of Honda power equipment I own. The unit is light and very easy to carry. This is very important to me when I have to lug it into my backyard and up my terraces to work the garden beds.
Good balance when carrying, servicing, refueling and operating. I do not use the transport wheels. The tiller is easy enough to carry single handed. It sits stable on level ground when refueling; and rests on the front guard when checking oil level.
Easy start - legendary Honda small engine reliability and ease of use.
Cultivating tines - do the job but can jam depending on how "rocky" your soil is. If cultivating through thick lawn (my case Buffalo) - you will find that the runners can wrap themselves quickly between the tines. Clearing is simply pulling the R-clips and removing/re-installing the tines.
Digging tines - these make trenching a joy. Let the machine do the hard work and simply spade out the softened earth. I find the digging tines less prone to jamming due to the "open ends". I purchased the digging tines from the US. They landed at my door at less than half local "trade" price!
Reprofiling - I used the tiller with the digging tines to cut swathes across my yard, eroding high points whilst throwing the soil down slope. This saved my back and got the job done fast and neatly. A quick rake over and the yard was ready for dressing before turfing.
The FG110 tiller is one tool that I'll be keeping for the long haul.

UPDATE:: Called into retailer today and the whole bore, piston etc are wrecked. Manufacturing fault supposedly. Dealer awaiting reply from Honda. Spoke to owner and he said he could see that this unit has had virtually no use and there are no problems with it being a warranty claim. However they currently have an 8 or 9 month wait on new stock, so don't know about parts yet. Usual story, Covid is delaying everything but I am finding manufacturers are using this as an excuse. If it's going to be that long, I will be requiring a full refund under Australian Consumer Law.
