Interesting test of tap washers – I'm just a home handyman. I replaced about 6 tap washers in our home today using plastic tap washers (Doust brand.) Most were fine, but a couple still dripped a bit. Then I found an old packet of Hydroseal brass ones with the little o ring. They worked a treat. Not a drip with a gentle turn off.

Faulty batch? – Used these hydroseal washers for years with no problem. Last packet I purchased just seem to fall apart with the o-ring. Not sure whether they are old stock... or are they made in china now?

replacements.

It's a good idea, when replacing a tap valve, to undo and grease the tap spindle, to replace the tap spindle O-ring, and to check that the valve seat is smooth.

If necessary you can use a tap seat refacing tool. But if you use it too often you will wear away the tap surface. Then you will need to replace the tap seat. Hydroseal also make reseating tools and tap seat replacement kits.
