Juwel Rio 240 Aquarium

Shame about the light box – I installed the tank 11 August last year. At the end of January the light box failed to turn on. No issues with the globes. The light box was replaced. It’s now 26 April and the light box has failed yet again. Yes, I’ll be contacting the supplier again for a replacement. Not the sort of issue I want to have to keep dealing with after spending $1250 on a tank.
Super modern looking tank, if you can get it on sale – These are comparable to the Aqua One stuff you will see around, I think the cabinets seem better quality.. so thats a big plus.. Aquael is the other, but its considerably more expensive. Not sure about the light issue others have had, mines been no problems, there is also a high-tech version of the light you can buy and replace, but I havent had the need yet, my plants are all doing well.
The only con for the Juwel system is it uses their inbuilt filters.. now a lot of people love them tbh, but I decided I wanted to be a bit more minimalist and remove it since once its full of water/fish itll be very hard to ever get it out (you can use a razer blade etc.. there are videos), so I have a canister filter underneath, there are vides on that too!
However if you arent using the Juwel filter/pump/heater.. then the cost benefit vs an Aqua One setup isn't there.. so now its basically like for like.. choose whichever has a nicer cabinet IMO. I got my juwel really cheap too, $1260 so it sort of sold it for me.. in terms of tank quality I mean it looks super slick, and has worked well for us, I had to appease the wife as this tank is in our living area.. and she's a fish convert now!
The lid is the 1 thing I wish was a bit more sturdy, its similar to the Aqua One lids, flexible plastic that hooks into a central light.. but you know what.. it hasn't caused me any issues at all.. I just feel like it could be thicker/heavier so I dont have to stress about breaking them.. but I open the lid every day to feed and they sit up fine.
Juwel 240 – I absolutely agree the light switches are faulty. I have replace one set to lights only to have the switch go again on the replaced. It is a sealed switch unit. It is very frustrating as the lights work but the switch doesn't. Therefore you can't turn them on
Not a very nice experience – After searching for an aquarium, I decided to purchase a Juwel aquarium. From day one, the aquarium has had constant problems with light. The retailer has replaced the original light unit 4 times in 11 months due to various faults. The first 3 lights including the original one had major issues that caused the light to turn on and off intermittently until they just stopped working. The third replacement light switch, would spark and make a crackling noise when switched on (the light would also flicker).
Not only have the lights been a major issue in regards to being faulty, but the lighting design is very poor. Running two T5 globes for even half a day would heat the water well beyond what tropical fish can stand, meaning that I would need to take the lids off to ventilate and cool the aquarium, I even ended up turning the heater off.
I am so frustrated and stressed out by everything that has happened. Buying and owning an aquarium should be a fun and relaxing venture. I definitely will never recommend Juwel aquariums to anyone. Definitely not woth $1000.
