Stay well away – Complete and utter rubbish. Four of these which I purchased in a four pack all died within 24 months. Finally the original that I had purchased about 6 months prior to the 4-pack has also died. Now I'm just waiting for the power board to die. Last Kogan-branded product I will purchase.

Power cycle on loss of wifi and short life – There are no settings on these, and the fact that they de-energise when wifi is lost can be terrible for some usages. In addition, one of the 4 plugs is not in a constant boot loop, not recoverable through a factory reset. Newer models can only be used with Tuya and related apps (not flashable to Tasmota). Buy a more premium brand/product.

Kogan Smart Plug Faulty, Failed Bad Service/Warranty – I bought a set of 4 Smart Plugs in March 2020. One died 6months -1yr ago and the rest have failed in the last few months. That's all 4 have failed in less than 24months. I assumed they must have got a faulty batch and contacted Kogan. Kogan said they couldn't do anything for me "They are out of their warranty of 1yr" . I wouldn't have considered… Read more

buying one let alone four if I was expecting them to fail in less than 2years. (or make the mistake of putting it on the freezer long term to see the power it was drawing to find it defrosting ) . I was really disappointed they were not willing to stand bye their product. If you search the net about smart plug lifespan, for one to last only a few (3) years is extremely unlucky and you should expect 10 or maybe much more. What did that say about all four of these lasting less than 2years. I though I'd generally had good experiences with their products, but now looking at the list I had four LED down lights that one died after a month, two by 3-4months and one by 6months and a couple of fitness trackers that didn't work when I got them (they did get me to chop them up and gave me credit - a positive..!?} and a kettle which is working but the lid lifter broke after 9months. Following drafting this review Kogan has provided me a $65 credit (what I paid minus GST and delivery cost) .This was agreeable to me, though I wish it hadn't taken such an effort to obtain.

Don't count on them – Bought a pack of 4 and only 1 still operates from the pack purchased just under 2 years ago. That indicates a 75% failure rate. Think before purchasing from Kogan.

Works well but locks you to the cloud – This is a rebranded Chinese Tuya device and requires an internet connection to work. I wouldn't have bought this if I knew this up front. I don't want my device state known by unknown third parties in China! Worse, Tuya seem to be trying to make it harder for owners to replace the "call home" behaviour with unladen alternatives that exist. They… Read more

seem to be changing the architecture of their devices to stop this. Finally, it gets mildly warm so I suspect using it to save money on a phone charger might actually use more watts than not using it at all, although I haven't measured exact use.

Dangerous Item – I bought a pack of 4. The items works okay, gives decent statistics but upon a power failure it does not automatically come back on. We were testing a fridge and freezer on 2 separate power circuits and a brief blackout has caused havoc when we found them 36 hours later.

Does what they claim but offers more which is a problem – Kogan SmarterHome™ Smart Plug With Energy Meter I purchased 2 of these for my BnB to control the heaters plugged in to the power socket in each room. Did this because guests would fall asleep with the heaters going full bore and we cannot go in like a kids room and turn them off. The plugs are set up on an Apple tablet. They do in fact do what… Read more

they are claimed to be capable of: - Can be scheduled to turn on and off a pre-determined time - Can turn plugs off and on manually from the Ipad thus over-riding the presets if any - Displays power consumption through that plug If that is all you want then these plugs seem good value on the current market However, to connect to the Ipad one has to download the free App and this introduces a range of other variables such temperature as a control possibility. The app offers a “Schedule” and quite separately something called “Scenes”. The Schedule is as you would expect, it allows pre-setting of on and off times. A Scene comprises several elements for each plug being: A condition or several conditions. For example If temperature falls below 13 degrees, If there are several conditions you can choose to fire the event only where ALL conditions are met or just one of the several conditions are met. Eg Condition 1 = If time is 9Am, Condition 2 = temperature > 15 degress. - Set to ALL then this will fire only at 9AM if the temperature is more than 15 degrees - Set to ANY condition then if the temperature gets above 15 before 9am the event will fire but in any case the event will fire at 9am regardless. Eg turn off the power. In the next section of the App one can set the time period and days when you want the conditions to be tested. For example between 6am and 9am check for the conditions being met otherwise do nothing. And then you can decide if you want every day or just some days to be active. My Scenario I have two rooms with wall heaters in each guest room. I want the heaters to turn on a 6AM if it is cold enough and off at 9AM or before that if the temperature rises above 16 degrees. I needed 4 rules for the period 6 AM to 9AM in the morning 1. Turn on plug 1 rule: If temp < 13 between 6am and 9am switch on every day of the week 2. Turn on plug 2 rule: ditto 3. Turn off Plug 1 rule: If temp > 16 or time = 9am between 6 and 9 switch on every day of the week 4. Turn off plug 2 rule: ditto

And I needed another 4 the same for the period 6PM to 9PM in the evening so the downsides are: - we are dealing with 8 rules just for 2 plugs. - Setting these up is difficult, each condition time period and days selection is on its own page. One cannot see all the plugs on a summary page with all the conditions and times etc to make sure all are set up the same for example. Maybe just me but I found it difficult to keep everything in alignment but, once set up rather than experimenting, it possibly is ok - I was also confused as to what over-rode what. I mean if there is a schedule on the plug to turn on at 6AM (using the Schedule section of the App) but ALSO had a Scene is set up saying only if cold enough with no time period, which rule dominates? Recall that in the App the Schedule is in a different place to the Scenes. I am not sure but possibly if there is a scheduled time on a Scene then the Schedule section may be disabled but not resolved at this time. However two other things made my quest fail. - If the iPad falls asleep the scene temperature rules do not fire. Oddly enough the time-based rule does seem to fire. I suspect this is because once the Ipad falls asleep there is no polling of the internet by the App to get updated temperatures. So, for my heater conditions to work I would have to stop the iPad from sleeping which is more or less impractical, would I remember to keep it on a charger? Looks like one needs a dedicated controller not a daily used iPad. - The temperature that the system uses must come from the internet and even though one goes through a process of saying where you live when setting up the temperature detail (right down to the street address but this must surely be spurious accuracy), the reading it gets appears to differ from the Met service by up to 3 or 4 degrees sometimes. This means plugs turn on or do not turn on erroneously. Well Kogan does not mention temperature control for this plug and their help desk told me the plug does not support temperature control so they have not breached any claim but it is confusing when the App DOES offer temperature control and it more or less works except for the 2 issues above!
