Leatherman Wave

My black Leatherman Wave + jammed up fast . one leg of the pliers stuck closed, on the first day I got it. Still not returned it yet as I’m still dealing with the death of my wife who I bought this in remembrance of.. The video would not open on my iPad A(16)….
A fantastic, long lasting tool – Have owned my leatherman for almost 19 years and it hasn't missed a beat. The reason I thought to write this review is today we came across a car crash that had just happened, with a vehicle on it's roof. Both occupants were stuck in the vehicle by their seatbelts as the buckles had locked into place as a result of the impact (a little known… Read more
safety feature in most cars) and both were panicking. I carry my leatherman in my car, grabbed it out and it cut the seatbelts with ease and both people were able to get out with minimal injuries. Leatherman comes in handy on so many occasions, just last week we needed a bottle opener when at the beach. Today it truly showed it's worth!
very happy with Leatherman – I was given a Leatherman Sidekick as a birthday gift about 10 years ago. It is a great product, and I am very happy with the after sale service. Well done!
Leather man Australia – I am a prolific lover of my Leatherman gear and I have a Wave. I now have owned 5 of them and that is only because I keep losing the things. In my retiring age, I will not lose this one but I feel it is incumbent on me submit this review. Recently is the only occasion I have needed to lodge a warranty claim and unlike s bloody many companies,… Read more
my experience with Leatherman Australia has be exemplary. There were no questions or hassles and I just (today) received a new unit. While this review may seem of minimal benefit, it means a whole heap to this old bugger who is struggling with the way us a costumers are treated when there is an issue and these people were awesome. The Wave and similar products are expensive but to me, it is like "you get what you pay for" and this is so appropriate to this product. Over the years, I have got my son and several of his friends to invest in the wave and they are also Leatherman "tragics" Thank you whomever you are in the Australian company and please never lose site of the notion that integrity as a company will always be supported in my opinion. Thank you
Fantastic service – My well used (and loved) Leatherman Wave finally broke after nearly 20 years. My fault, rather than the tool. I started looking for a replacement part and stumbled upon the warranty conditions. Contacted Leatherman Australia and received a complete new replacement within a week. This was far beyond my expectations! Warranty and service doesn't get better than this!!!!!!!
Won me over. Use everyday. No issues. Awesome tool – So, straight up confession. I’ve always loved Victorinox/Wenger and have several different types including their multi-tool, original NASA Champion, Work Champ, Gardener, etc, etc, and love the engineering precision and quality. Never intended getting a leatherman, with the prices having skyrocketed and many online comments about tool jamming and… Read more
suffering from rust. Well, saw one of the new wave+ on big discount a little over a year ago and purchased (multi tool junkie). Sprayed with ballistol and I’ve used it inside and outside almost everyday since, with my wife often looking for it for odd jobs as well. Haven’t used a victorinox since I got it. Why? It’s a tool, it looks and feels like a tool that should be used and scratched, bit like old jeans. Gotta love them. Victorinox is pretty, better built and super capable but you just don’t want to treat them rough and really dirty them. If you want to get a tool, especially one with pliers, then this is an awesome little tool chest. Yes it does jam up a bit when trying to close up, but reopen and try again and all good, no real issue. Weight pretty much in line with my larger Victorinox’s and wouldn’t want to carry anything heavier. If it’s going in a car or toolbox then I’ld maybe look for a “Leatherman Surge” on sale.
02032023 UPDATE:Still solid as a rock and going strong. Man have I done some work with this thing, got it filthy dirty, clogged with dirt, cement, all sorts of glue etc. Cleaned it up and no issues. The 420hc steel imo is immensely tougher than victorinox steel having used both extensively. This means it flexes and doesn’t break or chip like my victorinox would. Sure neither steel holds a sharp edge for long and needs constant resharpening, but they are easy steels to sharpen (with sandpaper if need be), however, for regular real world use the 420hc in the leatherman easily beats the victorinox steel in my opinion by being so much tougher.
My letter to Leatherman – I received a new Leatherman Wave in the post today . You people have taken after sales service to the next level. Never have I received such prompt and pleasant service. I would have been happy for it to be fixed, but a new one is fantastic, sincere thanks. I have 3 nephews turning 30 in the next year or so. I've decided to get them all… Read more
Leathermans. I'll also be sure to mention to people how good you were with my issue and how much faith Leatherman has in their product. Please ensure Leatherman are aware of my appreciation and thanks.
Best knife ever – Bought Leatherman knife from Ray's outdoor more than 10 years ago used it nearly every day for something ,the most useful tool one can have in ones pocket . I actually bought two Leathermen gave one to a mate for his birthday . Recently my Leatherman main blade broke I still used it as it had other tools on it. Eventually I decided to take it back… Read more

Rays outdoors is now called RAYS . Leatherman is American very well made tool , sharp blade, screwdrivers , pliers ,side cutters bottle opener ,file , hacksaw and is 316 stainless steel.
We'll forgive the one little issue!! – For nearly exactly a quarter of a century I wore a SOG Paratool multitool on my belt. Each and every day of that 25 years!! It was a ripper, and it got used ... probably half a dozen times a day on average. But as it started to get old and tired, more and more stiff to operate, with seized adjusting bolts ... it really was time to upgrade. Step up… Read more
the dear wife, and on my birthday last year a brand new Wave unfolded!!
Firstly, the leather pouch provided was actually pretty durable. I've found that the stuff provided with these tools usually dies after a few months. I live on the land and am fairly tough on this kind of thing! I even bought a locally made replacement pouch at Farmfest last year in anticipation. However the pouch is still in pretty good order, notwithstanding that the clip fastener gave up the ghost about 7 months after purchase. I still use the blasted thing, as you don't really need the fastener unless you plan on hanging upside down at some point during your day!!
Secondly, the tiny flat screwdriver tool broke the first time I used it. All I did was lift off the plastic ring on a recyclable milk bottle lid!! Obviously a major weakness ... and it would probably be replaced under warranty ... but I suspect the supplier would just chuck the whole thing out ... and I have a stack of little flat head screwdrivers anyway - so I'm prepared to cop this one on the chin.
The tool opens easily, and what makes it such a beaut is that deployment of most of the tools is a genuine one-handed affair, once you have the knack of it. This is great if you happen to have a handful of something or are holding on for dear life to a ladder with the other hand!!
The two knife attachments look identical when folded ... and it took me a long time to work out that the serrated one has a couple of cute little matching serrations right near the opening linkage that easily distinguishes it from the straight blade. Both are holding their edges very well ... neither have had to be sharpened
The tool also has great scissors, a medium phillips head, a very sturdy large flat head, a can opener (that gets used all the time as it's better than anything the supermarket sells!!), a file, and of course some credible pliers/wirecutters. There's also a ruler type scale in inches and centimetres/millimeters along the edges. All the stuff you need - and none of the pooncy stuff that you don't !!
All of the tools that need it can be locked in place - no more nasty surprises when that blade suddenly decides to fold back - usually at the worst possible time.
This tool is an absolute ripper, and the opening mechanism has shown no signs whatsoever of becoming sloppy in any way even after a year and a half of full-on use. It's been a terrific replacement for the Paratool, and at this rate it just may see me out ...!
Must buy for any multitool lovers! – I bought this from ebay for a good price and I am very happy with it so far. You have 18 different tools to choose from and is an every day carry item as it is light and portable. High build quality as you would expect from Leatherman brand and backed by 25 years warranty.
My favourite tool – I've had my first Leatherman, the Wave, for about a year now. I don't carry it all the time, but I like to have it handy at home and on trips. I've had no-name multi-tools in the past, some Gerber tools, and some Swiss Army Knives. This tops them all. The no-name tools are usually pretty ordinary in design, build, and materials. Gerber is much… Read more
better, but still completely blitzed by the design, fit, and finish of the Leatherman alternatives. The Leatherman tools are a little pricier, but the superior quality is evident.
A good selection of tools onboard. I find myself most commonly using the pliers, knife, screw drivers, and bottle opener. The plier jaws meet nicely when closed such that you could probably pull splinters with them if you wanted to - I use them for everything from detailed modelling work through to grasping nuts and bolts. The knife is good and sharp, and I like having a plain blade (there is a serrated blade on board as well if needed).
I find it extremely easy to open the knives with my right hand, and to close them too. This has come in handy a few times.
I've read about the quality of Leatherman tools declining in recent years - I have nothing to compare mine with except for the Gerber range and Victorinox SAK's. The Wave kills the Gerbers, and compares favourably to the SAK's (though the SAK's fill a slightly different need). I think that if the older Leatherman tools were better than the current crop, they must have been simply amazing!
Just get one!
Very useful in many situations – This is the most useful pocket knife. Good build quality (could be slightly more durable). You can use the pliers in one hand. You need to oil it every few years. I am very happy with mine.
Never leave home without one – Something I have nearly always carried with me for over 16 years and never thought twice about being without it, yet never thought of doing a review. Whether on the job/work (I'm a Tradie), fishing, camping, hiking or have it just sitting on a shelf in the kitchen, I always find a use for it. A must have is a small lanyard to hold around the wrist… Read more
- nearly lost it overboard many times when fishing and a small Arkansas Stone to keep the 420HC Stainless Steel blades sharp. I have used every feature of the Wave over and over again and with it nestled in it's nylon sheath - it's still as good as the day I bought it.
Forget the dollars - worth every cent.
Leatherman build quality has declined – I have owned Leatherman tools for a long time now. Having one on me has been so essential that on two occasions when I've had it confiscated at the airport, I have landed at my destination and gone straight from the airport to a sports store to buy another one. But I'm just about at the point of replacing my current Wave due to constant… Read more
disappointment with the build quality on the last two I have owned.
• Everything is stiff. There is no longer a firm, well-manufactured movement when opening the tools. Some are very stiff, and the effort to open various tools is no longer consistent.
• The pliers have stopped working properly. Again because of inconsistent movement of parts, one side of the Wave is stiffer than the other, and as a result the pliers won't open when both sides are folded out into handles.
• Brittle parts. I have broken both ends of three different eyeglass screwdriver bits, under normal use. The metal used in these must be very poor since I have a set of precision screwdrivers at home that have lasted 20 years with no discernible wear.
I can no longer recommend Leatherman to anyone, and have started looking for alternatives.
Beautiful – Looks and feels great. Sturdy. Smooth action. Very practical with no unnecessary gimmick gadgets. Not too big or heavy. Hard wearing. So many useful pieces in a small unit. Even the tiny scissors do a great job. Very impressed. I try to always have it on me.
Wave Tactical (Black) – A fantastic design and overall build for a multi tool. Feels sturdy when being used, however there is some flex apparent when using the screw drivers. Needs to be regularly cleaned and maintained due to the overall nature of the build, this ensures that it will last longer and personal preference. The DLC coating (black), wore off quiet a… Read more
lot when I got it, and now it looks well worn however totally unavoidable.
Knives stay sharp due to the high qality 420HC steels, however would prefer the SV30 steels to be used in their knives as personal opinion.
Overall, just the 'Toyota' of multi tools, just keeps working and wearing on, feels find years after purchase and will keep on plugging away till it breaks down - in which there is a 25 year guarantee that covers that!
As it sums up Leatherman is the choice in Multi Tools!
Word of warning - when buying online ensure that your tools are OEM and not seconds coming into Australia via eBay or other avenues!!! Fair price, great quality, dependability, spare bits available, great 'feel' weight and just keeps working day after day! the DLC coating wore off to leave a matt stainless steel colour, some rust evident in the DLC coating? Wont come off or unsure how it got there? Slight flex when using the screw drivers for heavy work.
Never leave the house without it – There are many imitators of the Leatherman out there, but the Leatherman is the best. The quality of materials, fit and finish are far better than any of the others. All of the tools on the Wave are excellent and all lock in place for safety. The knife blades open one handed and are easy to use as well as being razor-sharp out of the box. Tim… Read more
