Dear Ken, your experience is not an isolated case. My personal feeling is this is elder abuse. MP's and others can do nothing to stop it. Given the cost to residents and the denial of maintenance one wonders why the highlighting of such abuse is going unheard. The devil indeed has a name. I will continue to advocate for my Mother and Mother in law, even though I have been silenced. I wish you all the best. The twilight years should be times of joy, no stress and comfort, all of which are of no relevance to Lifestyle SA. Given my family have been involved since the inception, over 18 years and the control that is used over their lives whilst taking over a hundred dollars a week now it is both disgusting and appalling. What is actually offered is a lack of respect, no integrity and an abuse of power, all things that the elderly deserve better than. Six months to repair a termite infestation that I detected, not Lifestyle and fighting every step of the way to have it repaired. To have to fight, be abused and still pay $2000 in maintenance in that time is criminal in my opinion. Making Mum go to the office for a maintenance form in a full leg brace with a broken wrist and finally giving me a litre of paint so I could paint the outdoor area so Mum could sit out, withholding the paint for months, then asking for the remainder of paint back. And actually giving me the wrong colour knowing full well it was wrong. I had to paint it whilst on chemo aged 55 !!!!!!!!!

Thank you Kate... sorry to hear about your problems. All we can do is warn others. I too had to repaint my unit and replaced floor coverings that were supposed to be replaced under my contract. New contracts are different. I have been at the Sands also for 18+ years. It took from 2017 to 2024 to, hopefully... maybe...get a shower leak to the main bedroom possibly fixed, after numerous attempts and going to 9 SACAT directions hearings and 2 full hearings. I finally withheld maintenance before getting SOME of the work done. The Lifestyle sa representative didn't even know that there was still work outstanding. At the final conciliation meeting I got so fed up with the lies, and dishonesty I went to the bathroom and tried to hang myself. The dam strap broke. :-( Well at least I proved that I was upset with changes in my contract, without consultation, the inaccurate AGM minutes, the whole operation of Lifestyle sa. OFAW ignoring my concerns and breaches of the Retirement Villages Act and Regulations. OFAW actually tried to say only 24 pages of the 100 pages were actually contract. How stupid are they? They also would not attend any of the SACAT meetings or have a mediation meeting when asked to do so by SACAT. I look forward to dropping dead it has to be better than living in a Lifestyle sa village. But of course this is only my opinion.
