Essentially useless – Essentially useless Having multiple Makita 18 and 36v products and having 8 5ah batteries I purchased this thing thinking it would be as good as my other Makita products. It couldn’t be further from the truth. Unless there is something fundamentally wrong with this particular unit it was a total waste of money. Even with 2 fully charged 18v… Read more

batteries it doesn’t run for more than a few minutes then cuts out. I’ll be taking it to Makita for a check up prior to asking for a refund. Piss poor effort Makita.

Useless - Don't waste your money – I bought this kit to replace my Stihl petrol-powered garden tools. I thought I was doing the right thing - buying a quality brand, helping the environment and being able to leverage my investment in other Makita battery-powered tools. As a landscaper, I need my tools to work and to work hard. Unfortunately, this kit does neither. It constantly… Read more

'overheats' and stops dead despite very, very light use. The pole saw is especially bad for overheating. It's effectively useless - unless you want to constantly wait for it to cool down! I can't afford down time so, on one important job I ended up buying a cheap battery telescopic pole saw from a well-known hardware chain just to get the job done. To be totally honest, it leaves the Makita totally in the dust - and for a fraction of the price. I've mostly given up using this kit and I definitely won't be buying any more Makita garden equipment.

Convert to Makita – I grew up on an orchard using Stihl/Husq commercial products as the quality benchmark. I opted for Makita because their electric models were priced competitively. I have the Makita DUX60 power head with the trimmer, brushcutter, hedger + extension, and pole saw attachment and they are always an absolute pleasure to use after 3+ years. Almost zero… Read more

maintenance apart from occasional lithium grease on the drive shaft and typical maintenance for the hedger blade & chainsaw.

The one weakness is battery life which is about 2/3 of what you'd hope for with a standard petrol (particularly while line trimming). I have around 200m2 buffalo grass yard and I will typically empty the 2x 5Ah batteries just before finishing (using a DLM464 36v mower & 36v DUB362 blower). I will need to spring for 2 more 5Ah batteries or recommend 2x 6Ah if you can get them. But for me this downside is completely offset by the lack of maintenance.

This unit honestly leaves petrol gardening equipment in the starting blocks.

Buy the kits if you can because you often get a redemption product from Makita that you wouldn't purchase for yourself - some of these redemption items are now my favourite equipment too.

Absolute garbage – The Makita EY401MP extension pole chainsaw as a part of this set is utter garbage. The bolt that holds the washer on the sprocket comes loose in about 10 minutes of use. IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE AS THE CHAIN FLIES OFF!! First time it happened the chain flew off and destroyed the threads of the bolt so it couldn't even go back in. Had to find a… Read more

specialty bolt to replace it. Put new bolt in as tight as possible (note: there are no instructions on how to tighten the bolt as when you try to tighten, it spins the chain freely - so you have to hold the sharp chain to try to get enough tension on the bolt. What a retarded design.) Tightened new bolt as hard as possible, still vibrates loose after a few cuts. Insane Makita is allowed to sell this. It's a safety concern. I called Makita and looks like they're aware as they've changed the washer and sprocket system in the new saws but they won't honour fixing or repairing customers who have this old system. Absolutely unacceptable. The 1 star is the product as well as the (attempted) service for it. Better off getting Ryobi at least Bunnings will take care of you not Makita and Trade Tools.

disapointing over last two years – Ive had this tool two years, with the line trimmer and brush cutter heads. The tool has had an ongoing fault, when using the overload error shows up quickly (often within 5-10 mins use) and after reseting the tool it will keep overloading with almost no pressure agains the lines. I use it in a town residentual block. Ive sent it back to makita… Read more

service centre three times and they state there is no fault found and return the tool with the presistant issue.

Surprisingly capable equipment – As a long-time user of petrol-powered line trimmers and brush cutters I wasn't particularly confident that I would be satisfied with the performance of a battery powered unit. I needn't have worried; this thing performs well and has good battery life. I bought this kit as Makita offered a "free" line trimmer head with the purchase and a blower via… Read more

redemption. I have an older good-sized block and live in a court, I do my yard, front and back, as well as a few of the neighbour's yards, all on one charge. The power head has 3 power output options, for all but the toughest / longest grass I find the lowest, level 1 power setting to be effective, this would also help contribute to battery life. Level 3, high power, is beast mode and it absolutely rips through long grass. The bump feed on the line trimmer head works very well, the hedge trimmer cuts pencil thickness branches easily and the chainsaw is good for tree pruning as long as you let the tool do the work. The thermal overload has kicked in a few times when hitting heavy going on the line trimmer, not as yet on the hedge trimmer and is a regular occurrence on the chain saw when trying to force the cut. I bought an additional extension arm (kit comes with one already) in the hope of trimming high branches, the weight and length of the 2-extension arm set up makes anything other than direct overhead work very difficult - not recommended. The adjustable angle on the hedge trimmer makes flat topping hedges and accessing awkward areas a lot easier. Overall, VERY happy with the kit, quite a relief after such a significant outlay, and the added benefits of not needing to buy petrol, pre-mix and then smelling of exhaust afterwards cannot be under stated.

Petrol, never again – This kit has replaced my 29yo Tanaka hedge trimmer/brush cutter/pole saw combo. Never thought it would be as powerful but this 36v system feels more powerful. Simple changeover, no allan keys. Straight steel shaft is always superior for a brush cutter. Never a fan of the bump feed head so I tossed it for an old fashioned $28 hand feed (M10 x… Read more

1.25mm LH thread) on eBay. At 300mm it is a serious saw. It will cut out on over temperature if you run it too hard, takes a little getting used to. If you don't service even a quality petrol engine like a Tanaka regularly it will give you trouble. Batteries mean no more worries about dirty petrol, blocked filters, worn plugs, broken cords, not to mention noise and fumes.

If you live on an old fashioned quarter acre block, three tools of this quality for $1,200 is a very wise investment.

Trusted tool to do the job – I have the DUX60 with a brushcutter head (with metal blade bought separately) and a hedge trimmer head. Most recently I have been using the brushcutter head, set to 2/3 power using a Makita branded metal blade, cutting and mulching 5ft tall coxfoot grass, the batteries last about 45 minutes. I have 4 batteries, so I get about 1hr 30 minutes out of… Read more

it. I haven't measured charge time, but they seem to charge pretty quickly! I don't have to use earmuffs (especially good on hot days), as it is very quiet.

The only thing that I have a problem with is my middle finger and ring finger on my right hand (that hold the trigger) go numb and stay numb for several days, maybe I need to adjust the strap or just toughen up a bit! There is very little vibration, so I would be very surprised if that is the cause.

EDIT: The numb finger is no longer an issue.

I am very fussy, but I would not hesitate to recommend this product to anyone. Go buy one, you won't be disappointed!

Quiet and powerful - great piece of kit! – I purchased the DUX60P power head and several attachments as a kit to replace most of my petrol based garden power tools and the additional need for a pole saw. As I already have a large outfit of Makita 18V LXT battery tools the brand purchase decision was simple. The trimmer replaced a top of the range Honda 4-stroke and performs better. The… Read more

Makita 36 volt (2x 18V) is quieter, lighter and emits no fumes. The pole saw if used carefully performs well and trims high level branches with ease; again, no more fuel and fumes. Ditto for the hedger with the advantage of an extension pole compared to my old petrol Stihl 2-stroke which was noisy, harder to start and had limited reach and relatively heavy. Battery life is fine and a spare set charged up means no down time if you can last the distance yourself! Highly recommended kit and worth the investment especially with bonus offers from Makita often available.

36v power AWESOME – This tool delivers more power to the tool than any petrol garden tool I have owned, the build is a good solid quality with the ease of cordless power. The chainsaw pruning attachment chews the batteries harder than the other attachments, but the line trimmer easily feels like it has the power to handle a brush cutter head. Great tool would highly recommend. CON you need a min of 4 batteries
