Terrible Process for Applying for Cash Payment from Superannuation Account - In mid November 2025 I completed the Mercer Super Trust Form to request that the small amount of superannuation which I had in Mercer Super be provided to me in a cash payment. I had to download the form, complete it electronically, print it out, sign it and post it to… Read more

Mercer Super in Melbourne. I thought that I had complied with the identification requirements by ticking the first option and providing my tax file number but I failed to notice the poorly placed weasel words in the midst of a paragraph of text which stated “(if you wish to take a cash payment you will need to provide certified proof of identity)”. The fact that all of the money in my Mercer Super account was personal contributions purely to maintain my long standing life insurance policy doesn’t matter to Mercer. Their processes and systems which they state are there to protect their members, have in my opinion been developed primarily to make it more difficult for members to actually receive their superannuation balance in cash in a timely manner when they make a formal written request.

I was told by Mercer Super Trust customer service representative that as soon as I have provided Mercer Super with a certified copy of my drivers license or passport by Australia Post that they will aim to pay me the balance of my superannuation account within 5 business days. It took 10 calendar days for Mercer Super Trust to contact me after I posted the completed form and to be told at this time that I have to jump through some more hoops and send them my certified identification documents via Australia Post is extremely disappointing as I am certain that postage delays coupled with Mercer Super Trust’s archaic system will introduce a long delay into receiving my super balance. I made a formal verbal complaint to Mercer Super about their poorly designed form and received an email stating that they would update me in 5 days which is in my opinion an exceedingly poor response time.

I followed with a formal letter of complaint which I posted to Mercer Super along with a certified copy of my drivers license. I have since received a follow up email and Mercer Super Trust have advised “We will endeavour to resolve complaints within 45 days however, complex complaints may take us longer to work through. We will be in touch if we need any further information from you.”

An undertaking to stonewall me for 45 days or longer just because they can, would be a joke if it didn’t also involve Mercer Super Trust hanging onto my small superannuation balance for an obscenely long time purely because I had the temerity to make a verbal and then written complaint about their poorly developed forms and systems. It appears to me that Mercer Super Trust don’t take feedback from their members well and they also appear to do everything possible to avoid responding to this feedback in a timely manner.

I don’t understand why Mercer Super is still using archaic paper based methods to positively identify their members when there are secure electronic methods available. I never joined Mercer Super and have had my small superannuation balance compulsorily transferred from two previous super funds due to their shockingly poor performance (both underperforming Super funds were owned by Westpac). I was originally a member of BT Financial Group but they made horrendous mistakes on my superannuation for nearly a decade which took 3 years of written complaints to resolve so I transferred the majority of my superannuation elsewhere 11 years ago and left a small amount simply to pay my pre-existing life insurance policy.

My wife and I had a chat with mercer super financial adviser (Tim Lee). He was very helpful, courteous and considerate, explained exactly what the recommendations are after reviewing my portfolio and it is fully up to me to choose and I can act upon it online myself. He showed me where the documentations are kept, explained a lot of information. All in all very good chat. Highly commendable. Definitely five star. Tim Thank you very much.

I "inherited" Mercer Super after I originally signed with Tower in 1993(paying in a total of 23k til I suspended payments in 1997) which changed to TAL which changed into Mercer. My payout was 43k ! So yes, 23k only grew to 43k after 28 years(I had no life insurance cover on the policy) Worst customer service I've Ever experienced, not to mention… Read more

investment returns. Sooo glad I cashed out which was a long drawn out excruciatingly painful ridiculous process - their staff cannot see reason or common sense, continually claiming that my verified ID was a copy, not the original, even though the JP signed, dated correctly. The JP himself could not see the need to replace & recertify but Mercer insisted that if the original certified document (which my passport which hadn't expired) is older than 6 months, it needs to be recertified ‍!! Had to call them ?6times, taking over 4 weeks to receive my payout. Their phone system is absolutely the worst I've ever experienced including ATO, banks, retail etc

If you have a casual job, and you need to give to every new employer you superannuation fund membership number, super USI, Super ABN, Super phone and address, and you have plenty of time on your hand, Mercer is the right choice, because the have build the most complex system of how to get this basic data and give them to your employer. on the… Read more

actual app on the membership member number they have 2 numbers, on the internet they have 4 different names, 5 different ABN's, and amongst all the 1,500 emails from the you will never see this basic info, which is your membership number, their address, phone and ABN. I am actually considering to change this fund because of this.
