Great after sales service – I have had a 400r for 5 yrs and am very pleased with it. Bought a second one around 12mths ago which suffered some technical glitches, after some trouble-shooting with Oricom support I have received a replacement, Janet and Sam at O/support could not have been more helpful, cheers team - Andrew

Could Be Better – The Oricom UHF 400 R at first glance looks to be a very good product, Australian company though not Australian made (sigh). The hardware supplied allows you mount it via a bracket or in a DIN slot in your dash. The unit with 'R' stands for 'rear mic connect' so if you wanted to, you could mount it in a roof console and run the connect cable down the inside of the 'A' pillar and bring the mic cable up from under the the dash. Sounds good, would be even better if Oricom supplied that cable with the product or even had a listing on their website for it. The only way you could get one is to ring them and order it up separately (sigh). Switching on the unit, everything seems OK, the display is big so its easy to read, it has enough features to keep you busy for a minute or two. Communications seemed at first really good with signals been picked up from 20+ Km's that's with a good 6.5db antenna, mind you I was on the side of a hill at the time. At first I said it was really good, now the not so good. If you're planning to communicate near or around airports, radar dishes, radio transmission towers, mines or any other place that might have HF interference that includes some other petrol powered cars that put out radio noise then forget it as you'll be very disappointed. Though Oricom is quick to say their product conforms to Australian CB standards and their units are made with quality parts they cannot explain why their products fail in this area when other Australian owned and manufactured products do not. This explains why some shops who sell UHF radios don't sell Oricom products. THIS VERY DISAPPOINTING.

To sum it up if you live in the country then you might be happy with one, not so in the city and remember you get what you pay for, so try and buy the best for what you can afford.

Rubbish on the Market – I have owned two Oricom radios and one would think I learned after the first one. The first one was the 300 ultra compact and boy that was to say the least almost passable as a radio. The second one was the uhf 400R and this was worse that the 300 model. Nothing but hissing when you are trying to listen to it even after factory reset the squelch set. The radio was installed by a professional installer so you can't say it was an installation problem. I have talked to other people with Oricoms and in most cases they have taken them out of their trucks and 4x4s and sold them to at least recoup some of the money paid for the rubbish called ORICOM. To all that are thinking of installing a 2 way radio go to a better brand. The more reputable stores who care about their reputations would not and do not stock the Oricom brand. Then of course you do have the stores that really don't give a hoot as long as they can sell so buyer beware.
