I am a tax agent, trying to find alternatives to xero and myob as their fees are quiet disgusting for SME. Dont waste your time with PAYROLLER, too many problems just trying to get a free look and try but it already has issues with a free trial.

It's ridiculous that I can't even access the SuperStream tab in VIEW ONLY mode just so I can see how much super is left to pay my staff.
That's not to mention the ridiculously dishonest concept of advertising your subscriptions at "$0.99/employee/month" then when you come to checkout, there's this vague "Minimum Transaction Value" scrawled in fine print – a phrase I have never even encountered in my life. I had to scour their website and stumble across their thesis-length blog post just to familiarise myself with this novel concept. Why don't they just call it what it is: "minimum contract cost"? It's crazy that I can understand a Telstra mobile phone contract more easily than whatever you can call this mess.
I was going to subscribe for the convenience of familiarity; however, I will not stand to support such unscrupulousness, even if it will cost me more taking my business elsewhere.

works ok, the price increases all the time, free, cheap, more, min-spend etc etc – Works well. The only bad vibe is they keep cranking up the price over and over. I've never seen any new functionality. Offering the 'free' thing when they started was 100% 'startup' bait and switch. I simply assume when the price reaches xero I'll just move.

Perfect STP software for micro business!! – Simple to use interface with great video tips on the different features. It only took me an hour or so to setting up the account and notifying ATO and pay my employee. What even more amazing is it is free! Awesome software!!

ahead and deducted a year's subscription again ($158 per annum). This amount is also over 20% higher than last year. They will not refund the money, even though I do not need this service. Make sure you go into "Settings" and turn off "auto renew" so that at least they will let you know beforehand what their charges are for the forthcoming year.

costing is tricky, you will be shocked what you are charged when the yearly subscription comes up. You are not told how much, just taken without any notice or review. I found using MYOB cheaper and integrated. You will wait hours for support by email, no phone service and their software may start random taking money from you
Free version was fine until this month – What a lovely Xmas present, to to do my final pays for the year for my micro (2 casual employee) business and they suddenly want to charge me a pretty hefty fee. Now have to tear my hair out working out which is the very few options for microbusiness on the ato website are still free. Enshittification as a service, yes this is the world we live in. and forth via email and messages trying to sort out why the system would not register the week I split out to finalise the EOFY cleanly. Turns out it was auto correcting the year - even after I had changed it - and I'd done the same pay run at least 3 times - in the wrong year! However, through all the messages and emails - the time was wasted as people wouldn't simply answer my questions! Then, when I had one 'employee' trying to finalise her tax, she informed me her ATO records were showing as zero! On my end - looking at the correct Fin year on Payroller, she had money paid to her and tax taken and it showed as finalised. After an agonising phone call to the ATO, where I ended up in tears (!), I have 2 employees showing different figures at the ATO end than what I have on my 'finalised' STP report, and 2 employees who for some reason went through on a separate report on the following day - showing as not finalised! I have to call the ATO to find this out mind you as it does not show at my end of ATO site. MOST DISTURBINGLY THOUGH - I'm looking at Payroller and at a fully 'finalised' STP for 2021-2022 fin year with all employees on it! How the heck does it change from what I submit on Payroller to what they submit to the ATO?? The cynic in me says it a devious plot of Payroller to force me onto the paid version! Just to be clear - I am not a business - I am a mum trying to pay carers from NDIS funds to assist me with my disabled daughter. So forcing me onto the paid version is just plain wrong in my case! Between Payroller and the ATO - you have made my life much harder than it already is - more frustrating than it already is and have sent my nerves skyrocketing with the stress of now having to face going back and forth with Payroller over damned emails (and not a phone!!) for the next 2 weeks, whilst my carers hound me about finalising their tax! Payroller substandard – This is a very bad online service . The so called freeservice is now a pay service for simple STP reporting. There is patchy reporting of the STP . ATO has no record of some recorded STP pay runs. There is no possibility of contacting them . I found the 1300108399 by searching google. Dodgy answering system/VM . Disgusted . they wanted to introduce a paid option, why not just for the extra bells and whistles, and leave STP reporting free? Instead, they only let you continue reporting STP for free if you do it via their mobile app. Sounds good, right? Not really:
- There's no way to see your pending or completed payruns on mobile. If there's a mistake with a past one, you have to pay fix it on a computer. - If you start and cancel a payrun on mobile, it leaves it as a draft, which messes up all the YTD numbers. You have to pay to fix it on a computer. - And hey, sometimes the mobile app will conveniently display an error message saying the app will have to restart after you've finished a payrun but before confirming the STP submission. Now you've got a completed payrun that hasn't had STP submitted. Guess what? You have to now pay to submit STP.
There's basically zero flexibility in the free option, effectively forcing you to pay in order to fix any issues, including supposed software bugs that are no fault of your own. Stay far away, there are much cheaper, but higher quality (and even still free) options for STP reporting out there.

BUT I now look at the latest news from Payroller and there is a MTV...."Minimum Transaction Value." SO how much is that? Delve into their FAQs and find that it is now $11.99 per month!! What an absolute con from these people. The ATO inflicted this rubbish on every small business where you had to have proper ATO software to lodge details of miniscule wage payments. No exceptions. Payroller took advantage of this making out that they were trying to assist and yes maybe you could use their accounting firm for more work, fair enough. Nothing is free. But this was just deception to suck everybody in. I would not use this firm for anything now.
UPDATE August 2023 I have not dealt with this company for 2 years and all my problems were as stated above. They have just contacted me with a "special Offer" whereby if I refer new clients to them they will pay me $50.00. Payroller is unprofessional beyond belief. As if I would monetise a client to get a $50 kickback!! I can only keep saying my personal opinion is to HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS COMPANY.
