Redback Techologies Smart Hybrid Inverter SH5000

My Redback SH5000 hybrid inverter battery system was installed in Sept 2019, but started having intermittent problems in April 2020. These slowly became worse until the inverter communications failed (and froze) in May 2025 - with 2 occasions it came to life in June and August 2025 for an hour or two, nothing since then. I paid an installer to… Read more
insert a new SD card on Redback's recommendations, but this did nothing to fix the problem. Redback told me they would send a new Ouija (communications) board to me in September 2025 but have not done so, despite my many email requests for this part. My Redback warranty (5 years) expired in Sept 2025, but the unresolved communication problems since 2020 should be still covered.
As a result of the Redback inverter's complete failure, I have had to install a new (different brand) inverter and battery system, at great expense, in 2026. Redback's customer service is appalling and very time-consuming as well.
Bought hybrid inverter in June 2024. The batteries were disconnected in February 2025. After many attempts to contact support and many false promises to arrange repair am currently waiting on most recent promise to replace batteries under warranty. Also noticed they have just removed the option to communicate with support from the online app and redback online portal. Worst ever company to deal with. Show details

LEMON I'm sick of the constant, problems, drop outs, app and web portal issues and complete lack of customer support I am actioning a product refund from you as this product is not fit for purpose I am going to lodge a complaint with: Queensland OFT (Office of Fair Trading) and ACCC. But you know that already as I lodged a complaint with your staff days ago who said he would escalate it but as per Redback Technologies usual behaviour I have received no correspondence
Subject to Australian Consumer Law: Major Faults You're entitled to choose a replacement or refund, and may also claim compensation for damages or losses (e.g. lost energy savings, food spoilage, etc.). A major fault could include: System not working at all Repeated failures Dangerous operation Not meeting promised performance (e.g. storage or output capacity)
Redback Technologies are the worse company I have ever dealt with. We have two systems, both have lost a battery. we have waited almost 12 months for the first battery and the second not that much after this and still waiting for replacement batteries. No responses to emails, write something on facebook and they may respond. their customer service is pretty much non existent. I would never ever use this company.
Constantly disconnects battery - zero customer service – Had a solar and battery system installed 9 years ago. 3-4 times a year the battery gets disconnected for no reason and with no notification. Customer service takes months to respond and often it is "oh, we restarted it for you remotely". My investment spends a chunk of the year being completely redundant. My next step is the ACCC. Do yourself a favour and look elsewhere.
POSSIBLY THE WORST HOT RUBBISH NOT SUPPORTED – Played up since day one and never worked right since, constantly failing always falling over and now its out of warranty no tech will come and fix it or support it, so after 6 years 15 grand spend I feel like ripping it all out and buying a system that works, DO NOT BUY REDBACK….. its totally rubbish, and no support by local installer Show details
Issues almost from day 1 – Inverter totally died after one year. We waited months for a replacement inverter. Batteries have had constant outages, they will work for a while then issues will arise again in no time. Now inverter says batteries are disconnected, even though they appear fine. Currently having to bypass the inverter everyday as it shuts down because it can’t… Read more
communicate with the batteries. With all of these issues, the worst is the lack of care and support from Redback. We are now in a position where Redbacks response is to tell us to contact the installer, but the installer has retired. Then Redback support says to contact the business we purchased the unit from, but the business has closed down. Now Redback just doesn’t respond at all. Their customer service is terrible.
Mostly reliable but annoying quirks – We have a battery system and this inverter has functioned as expected with regard to programming and scheduling the battery charging and feeding into the grid, however because the NBN is quite intermittent where we live the internet connection with the Redback portal is lost following outages. And here’s where the problem lies: Because of the… Read more
design of the software the entire inverter has to be reset to get it to search for an internet wifi connection, but of course using the bypass switch cuts power to the entire house including the modem because like most households we don’t have a UPS. This means that when power is restored the modem struggles to connect to the internet in time for it to be available to the inverter. Surely the wifi connection in the inverter could be reset without turning off the whole system? This is a terrible flaw in the system because it makes monitoring unreliable. I implore the guys at Redback to fix this issue.
This system is terrible – I purchased this unit approximately 5 years ago because it was operated in Australia . Since the system was installed it has been switched off for over 12 months for a battery recall. It continually looses connectivity, so you cannot get a true reading. Restarting it doesn’t work and if you seek help or any advice you cannot speak to anyone. Show details
Great System! – Recently had a 14kwh battery and new 10kw solar system installed in Kangaroo Point and it's been a great system so far. We lived off grid with it for two weeks while waiting for our energex connection and it was amazing. We run an electric car and all electric appliances and we're virtually drawing nothing from the grid and feeding our solar… Read more
back into the grid for others to use. With no fuel bill and no utility bill the payback time will be very quick, seem like a good Qld company so get one!
It's DC coupled so allowed us 10kw of solar on top of the battery that others don't and for reference our system was $20,450 and installed by Evergreen Electrical, highly recommend.
Redback Installation by Plico Far Exceeded My Expectations – Installed 23 Aug 2022. Redback SH5000 inverter 24 x Trina 370W panels 8.88kw 3 x Pylon batteries total 10.7kw Household consists of 2 adults running on almost totally self generated power. Being situated in Albany WA I was concerned with being so far south, tail end of winter and having a lot of overcast/cloudy weather may affect the solar… Read more
performance. Since installation we have had some very cloudy overcast days with rain and the latest the battery has reach 100% has been by 1:30pm. On clear day it is full by 1030 -11am. Fortunately we have a wide north facing roof with no chance of shade sunup to sundown. If you watch what you are consuming the battery easily covers the house's consumption from sunset to sunrise and that's including running the AC on heating and running a power hungry projector (compared to a TV) and a couple lights until 10pm or so. Some nights up until 1:30am (AC off around 10pm) and battery gets down to about 22-23% before solar generation starts around 6:30 -7:45am. The day after it was installed I did a test of turning on every light in the house, the projector, the clothes dryer, a PC with 4 screens, a CCTV NVR & screen and AC on full heating and I managed to be drawing 0.1kw from the grid. I have had no communication problems as i was advised by the installer to put in a hardwired LAN cable. I have no problem recommending Plico and Redback
Redback SH5000 Hybrid Inverter – Working perfectly, we are generating 80% of our own power over winter....the coldest and wettest winter we have had for 26 years!. Initially there were hiccups as a nearby western power transformer was spiking the system causing it to glitch but all perfect now that issue has been fixed by western power. Show details
I'm the lucky one – Lucky that I didn't have the problems other people had and this one actually worked. This, because I insisted (extra expense) on Ethernet hard wire I avoided the Wi-Fi issues. Plenty of battery experts have told me not to have 2.4kwh and 3.5kwh batteries in combination. I got two 3.5's but there isn't enough space in the BEC for two more 3.5's.… Read more
But I've bought the last Pylontech battery ever in my life. Customer service is non existent. "Buy another Battery". No wonder LG Chem withdrew from doing business with them. Software allows me to take advantage of off-peak and shoulder to recharge from the grid as there is not enough battery capacity. But the worst thing is watch the stupid software haemorrhage all that hard earned energy back to the grid for the paltry FiT and then to see is bought back at Peak tariff. Soul destroying. Can't see me getting my money back on this one before I die. The five star reviews for this product are decidedly fishy and look like a cut and paste from a promo.

The worst inverter I have ever seen – Just dont buy it, had one for two years in my Queensland house, always goes off line, constant battery coms problems, no support in local area of Rocky to fix it, always lodging support calls. Just terrible. I have had a Fronius inverter at my Vic house, faultless, Just dont buy this heap of junk! About to lodge of complaint to consumer affairs, stating its totally unfit for purpose! Redback SH5000 Great Product – Redback is the company we have just got our solar battery system through. It’s a SH5000 (5kW Inverter, 6.6kw of 265watt Jinko Panels, 4 Batteries total 9.6kWh). It’s an Australian company at the forefront of Technology and the product is incredible, check out their website. We are so impressed. The Company has an Adelaide Based Technical Support… Read more
(George) for Redback should any assistance be required on your site. During the day the sun runs the household appliances and excess power is stored in the Batteries, after the batteries are full excess power is returned to the grid. During the evening our house runs off the batteries. The System will also assist in a “power outage” supplying power to essential items like Fridges and lighting that was preselected at installation. The Online monitoring is fantastic and very responsive showing Exported power, Imported power, our systems Generation and the House’s Consumption. Also shows Batteries Charge and much more. The software driving the system works brilliantly. The Redback System was Installed by NRG in Adelaide, we live at a Seaside Country town about 85kms from Adelaide. This was no problem for the Sales & quote process, then installation of the Jinco Solar Panels and Redback System. Both Redback & NRG were friendly and helpful all the way through the process and we highly recommended anyone considering Solar to use this system.
Very Pleased – We have a Redback SH4600 with battery backup which was installed 18 months ago. So far very happy and have a good credit balance with the power provider! No issues that have affected it’s performance & minor issue corrected promptly - they even contact me before I know that somethings not quite right, which was just a communication thing with my… Read more
WIFI router. System was updated to latest operating system yesterday, friendly and knowledgeable technicians who explain everything. Australian company and I certainly recommend them.
Does not do what it is supposed to – In July 2018 I purchased a Redback Technologies 5 kw system with battery back up. All went well with this system till late September when the battery component disconnected itself from the rest of the system. The system was rebooted and it reconnected for one more week and then the same happened. This has now occurred approximately 20 times at… Read more
least. The software has been updated, one of the batteries has been replaced and numerous re starts have not helped. They are impossible to get any service from and basically don’t care because the according to them the problem is not their problem and I should deal with the energy provider that sold it to me. This system clearly does not perform to its intended purpose. When I should be storing power generated into the batteries I am instead selling it into the grid at a minimal price as the system does not recognise that there are batteries connected for that purpose. I am very disappointed with the system , the service and the whole experience. I strongly recommend if you are in the market for this sort of system keep away from Redback Technologies.
Solar Hybrid Inverter review – Recently purchased a Solar Hydbrid Inverter from Australian company Redback Technologies. The basis of the Inverter comes from the highly rated chinese Goodwe inverters. This inverter allows for charging to batteries and feedback to the grid which suits residential properties. They're managed out of the university of Queensland and provide… Read more
excellent feedback. Its impressive technology and so far appears highly effective. Very impressed! What's even more impressive is when you call you're not bounced through overseas call centres and they're staff are happy to answer questions.
