Lights to quickly, doesn't last the 5hr that is advertised. I find im having to put more coals on every 1 and a half. Will not buy again as other charcoal is harder to light but maintains the heat for said time.

Makes too much smoke! – So Smokey! I cannot use this in my backyard for fear neighbours will call the fire department! No way I would cook with this. Also, it is quite hard to light.

Smoky and horrible – Horrible smoky burns the eyes. Dusty and horrible not using them again. We spit roast a lot these are the worst ones we have ever used. Waste of money never again

Best ever, just use fire lighter – This the best in Australia and would burn with real heat for 6 hours, do not buy the other one just killing you to make them go. Best in Australia

Burns well – I light these with firelighters . I put 3-4 firelighters in each basket and light the firelighters. The charcoal is ready in approx 20 mins. They burn hot and don’t leave any nasty flavour. My favourite fuel to bbq with in the Weber charcoal bbq. Photo of chicken, cauliflower (in foil tray) potatoes, sweet potato (wrapped in foil). All cooked in approx 1 hour.

Waste of time – Just like thre other reviews here they just don't light. Tried a great gun and fire lighters. I feel better now I can see others had the same experience. Will have to find some real charcoal.

Better off rubbing sticks together, rather then getting these to light up – After using the chimney fire starter method and fire lighters and paper, these fake charcoal wont light up correctly even after 30mins of direct flame, back to other brands. Lucky i had gas bbq backup.

Oh god the stories are true – This item is the single best product in the market - that's if you are after a flame item that defies all laws of combustion. These are awesome, I tried everything to get these to burn, nothing works, I even tried sitting them atop of the jets in my BBQ, yes they start to burn after 30 plus mins but true to form, once I took them off the direct… Read more

flame, they did what they are design to do, cease burning. What I really love is the wording on the box - igniting goodness. That's why we tell our children not to do magic mushrooms or any other types of hallucinogenics, they make you believe things that's not real. You keep going marketing team, don't let facts get in the way of the truth.

Awful – These should made into building materials as they absolutely will not catch alight. Do not buy under any circumstances. I spent 90 minutes and a ton of firelights and they didnt even flinch.

Better than the rest – After trying other brands and failing, gave the Redheads Charcoal a go. 100% happy.. finally found a product that produces enough long lasting heat to cook in our camp oven. Won’t use anything else now. Great product! Used a charcoal starter to get the charcoal hot, starting it off with natural firelighters & let it go for about 20 minutes. Easy!

Consistent and long burning – Used the Redheads Expert wood charcoal for the first time in my offset smoker and in comparison to the usual briquettes, these were perfect for the cook. They burnt slow and long with a consistent heat that was easy to manage over the 7 hour period. I used a lesser amount compared to previous smokes/cooks using briquettes and they produced less… Read more

ash as well, which would normally restrict airflow. I lit these using a handful in a chimney whilst I prepped the meat, and were good to go and burning hot when ready to start. For anyone using these for the first time I recommend taking into account the slow burn time in the initial stages and then using the "Minion" or "Snake" method to guarantee a long cook without having to consistently renew coals as you would with briquettes. Cant recommend enough for those who are using smokers, and/or cooking meats that need along time on the heat be it direct or indirect.

Nope – Back to the drawing board for this one, Redheads. These coals take an eternity to light and then fizzle out once you put the lid on, with all the vents open. You owe me a pizza.

Useless – If I ever build a house, I will build it out of this "charcoal" to ensure it never burns down. I bought it because it said charcoal, but it's just one of those useless briquettes with a different shape. Nothing short of a propane torch for fifteen minutes could get them going, and even now when the "coal is glowing, the bacon I put on the bbq is still limp. Absolutely useless. Save your money.

Hot and long burning - not hard to start – Redheads Expert wood charcoal is now my go to brand for barbeque cooking. I started off using branded briquettes as most people do as they are cheap and predictable. However I find typical briquettes generate a large amount of sand and ash waste and continuously expose your food to sodium or potassium nitrate as an oxidiser to the char in the… Read more

briquettes. I also find they burn out quickly and go cold as they get smothered by all the ash.

Enter the Redheads charcoal. These are a densely compressed form of charcoal without any fillers and chemical and taste free. I note though that they have a faint but pleasant wood smell as they burn. I did a ten hour cook using an offset plate in the Weber kettle at 120-140degC on the weekend and only had to add a few handfuls of extra coals at the 5.5hr mark and when I extinguished them at the end of the cook there were still a reasonable amount left over.

I note people complain they are hard to light using chemical firelighters and go out. They may take a little longer to light as they don't have the chemical oxidiser in them and they are dense, but I only light my charcoal now using a heat gun / electric fire starter which only takes a few minutes and gets the coals flaming hot. I've never had them go out when cooking with them but as with any lit charcoal, they work best in a hot pile so using the charcoal holders is recommended for direct grilling.

No burn – We had to resort to firelighters, cardboard, twigs and actual petrol to get these awful things to burn. Still they refused to burn. We won’t be buying this brand again.

Fizzle out and slow to burn – I've bought these briquettes twice and been disappointed twice. They don't all set alight easily even with firelighters. It takes ages for enough briquettes to burn well enough to bbq on. Heat only lasts for a short time. When bbqing any liquid dripping on them seems to extinguish them. I have often found unburned charcoal the in the bbq the next morning.

Bad Product – First time using Redheads Charcoal thought to give them a go as they have ran out of our usual product. We always use the redhead firelighters with no problem. We placed them in our Webber and after 1/2 hour the coals weren’t even lit up. We made sure everything was in order for them to work. We re tried it again another 2 times and in total 2hrs later no use the coal didn’t start. Would not recommend these bbq Charcoal ever.
