Sharkbanz says it will "Reduce The Risk" by how much is anyones guess ! – The product being reviewed is called Sharkbanz 2 it is American/ China made and for us has as much credibility as comic book advertisements selling X-Ray glasses. It's claimed to be the best non electric deterrent available according to the manufacturers and after years of following the product I'm of the view that some clever marketing is… Read more
mostly responsible for the sales of this product .
It has been reported Sharkbanz, which launched in Australia at the beginning of 2015, makes a wearable shark repellent essential for surfers and other ocean enthusiasts, basically its a plastic watch style bracelet with a static magnet inside , Made in China encased with a Neodymium Iron Boron or (NeFeB14 ) magnet and is sold under licence from US/Canadian company "Shark Defense" That's the same company that makes the pulverised dead carcass of shark in a bottle (shark juice) As seen on TV - Mythbusters ( It shows the product repelling sharks for about 5 minutes or so when the liquid is released as a cloud underwater when sharks are near.)
Apparently sharks don't like smelling other dead sharks ( see the test here on youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E1GenfKR9pk ) or do a search.
Sharkbanz "FORMER" Asia Pacific Chief Executive Officer [name removed] reportedly said, "Sharkbanz "can be effective against deterring investigative Great White Sharks" up to a distance of two metres, but "will not prevent an ambush attack".
Which means it wont prevent shark attacks but may deter one sniffing or being curious IF the "ampullae of lorenzini" ** the gel filled pores under the nose of the Shark becomes irritated by the magnetic field from the Sharkbanz , to me thats a bit near to the sharp end of an unpredictable shark to take that kind of close encounter risk. ** https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/agricultural-and-biological-sciences/ampullae-of-lorenzini
We did an out of water test on the magnetic field of a Sharkbanz and its magnetic field seeing when it reacted with a compass needle and it was much less than a meter out of the water, it may be slightly more in the salt water but we doubt a 2m field will deter a Hungry Great White Shark attacking at speed from deep below the surface in a predatory response. Other species of elasmobranchii may react differently. There are no truely independent scientific studies showing the effectiveness of the Sharkbanz device specifically. While there are studies examining magnets as shark deterrents, these were published by the same scientists who founded Shark Defense.
Shark Defense's [name removed] was reported as saying," There are more studies on the way" but admits that out of the two technologies he works with "magnets and chemical repellents the chemical repellents are the "most promising".
We Rated it @ 2/5 stars it is a good looking design but bulky and should you encounter a sick or tired shark like a slow moving Wobbegong with no teeth it might work.
But don't take our word for it check the product online for yourself and if you believe the testimonies by people wearing them during an incident with a shark ask yourself if it was the magnet or the sharks reaction to being faced causing it to turn away like in Shark Weeks “ Laws of Jaws “ documentary which is worth watching!
