Spring Acrylic Undercoat Sealer Interior/Exterior

Did not realise this is a Bunnings home-branded paint when I looked for a relatively midrange cost undercoat. It has the consistency of thickened cream., wouldn't advise putting on your apple crumble though. Goes on with brush or roller quite gluggily. Dries out to a chalky texture which when sanding for next coat, either 2nd or your colour paint, tends to come off! Frustrating even with light sand! I have been doing up furniture, and also houses since the dinosaurs walked the earth and can safely assure you to avoid this crappy kiddy paint. Hated it!
You get what you pay for – I had run out of Taubmans undercoat. At $120 for 10 litres I thought I would try a cheaper undercoat. You can see at the top the taubmans has a much whiter single coat. And less obvious roller marks. Both were applied with the same roller and technique. The smell of paint is much stronger with the spring undercoat. If you have the time to do multiple coats and don’t see the value of microban. The spring is okay for the price. I’ve included a picture of the paint used next to another brand over paint, not bare plasterboard.
Why would you pay more – This undercoat did an excellent job. Made by Dulux - performed well on rolller, brush and airless sprayer. I dont understand why you would pay more. Have used it on several large jobs, which have all worked out well.
Cheap Undercoat – I had small area to paint, bare plasterboard, rear hallway very low traffic area so I decide to save few dollars and try this undercoat, I worked out I needed about 3L, Instead of buying my usual Paint I use I decided to try this brand as the price was very attractive so i brought a 4L tin. Coverage = poor using my usual brand 3 liters would have covered the area, I only managed to cover about 75-80% of area.
Applying = brush was terrible could not get even, roller was okay but extra working going over it to keep roller marks out.
Fumes = fumes where very noticeable but not overbearing
Washing up = very easy
Finish = areas done by brush are terrible, areas done by roller are okay
Filling = very poor
Splatter Proof = very poor
I am comparing this to Tabumans Trade undercoat prep which is the usual undercoat I use on piaster board. Overall you get what you pay for, at 1/3 of the price to the Tabumans sealer/undercoat I use, But i need about 50% more to do one coat I can usually get away with one coat but with Spring I will have to do 2. Yes its cheaper but will have to use twice as much to do same job as premium brand. Getting good finish requires more effort. It does the job, but costs in time doing extra coats and extra effort getting nice finish. So taking into account having to use more paint and extra time taken it is not that cheap, I ended up buying second 4L tin and have about 300 to 500ml left over after second coat. Figured out i saved $22 dollars on this small job but spent extra 8 hours doing the second coat which I do not need using my usual paint.
This is one product I would not use in a wet area. I will not be using it again. If money that tight yea it does the job but really not saving that much and allowing for extra time taken to do well I consider this paint not worth it. Also watch the splatter, this paint splatters badly when using rollers.
